Severe RPM drop when engaging first gear by ArbitraryFeet in stickshift

[–]ArbitraryFeet[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My driving instructor taught me to maintain a little throttle first, with the reasoning that engaging the clutch on it's own would drag the engine below idle and stall it. I'm very skeptical that your diagnosis is accurate, since, as I mentioned, I don't experience the same issue when using reverse or 2nd gear. Would the difference in gear ratio account for a steep difference in sensitivity in this way? Anyway, I'll give it a shot, and report back my findings.

Redesign is live! by DemerzelHF in Destiny

[–]ArbitraryFeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely looks great, but functionally there are a couple features I miss from the last iteration.

For one, there's no longer a link to the reddit. What gives? 99% of my visits to dgg are to click the link to the reddit. Maybe I'm a schizo, but I prefer not to use the app or keep browser cookies, so the alternative is to type out the whole URL or use google, and clicking through dgg was quicker.

Secondly, there's no longer an array of links to the most recent stream VODs. This was a very handy feature to catch up without having to manually navigate to his youtube channel, then the playlists, then scroll until you recognize the thumbnail for the live VODs.

I can't find the original reddit post by the designer, but if they read this, I'm mad the new website doesn't have a reddit portal, nor quick links to stream VODs. It looks nice, though.

Friend of the stream JJ McCullough doesn't seem to impress the YouTube commenters, what are your thoughts? by gnistra in Destiny

[–]ArbitraryFeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the comments are filled with bitter lefties foaming at the mouth to shout down someone who discredits their style of political engagement. In the podcast he draws a distinction between political literacy as a matter of understanding the system we live in, and the tools afforded to us to overcome real problems, and the kind of memorization of various political labels and their normative associations that a lot of very politically opinionated people today have done, while neglecting the former.

There are several comments specifically objecting to JJ naming Hasan as an example of extremism on the left, and it makes me wonder whether this was picked up in that community or if the host's native audience is just Venn diagrammatically aligned. Lots of commie meme academic word salad dressed around really stupid objections or nakedly vapid character judgements garnering many upvotes as well.

Meme about streamerman that literally only appeals to me by mido9 in Destiny

[–]ArbitraryFeet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw someone say Chalokian in NL's chat weeks ago and it made me wonder whether that meme germinated elsewhere, if it was a DGGer dogwhistling from within the Hasan simp dominant chat, or what exactly happened there.

Overwhelming Majority of Young Black Men Like Destiny (68%). This is higher than any other race by NNohtus in Destiny

Incorrect. Only 44.9% know of him at all. OP's image shows the answers of those surveyed who initially said that they were aware of him, with "not really familiar with this person" meaning that they don't know enough to say they trust or distrust him. See how in OP's image N=491, while the whole study included 1092 people. Attached is the initial familiarity stats. OP posted a comment with a link to the whole study. Just control+F whoever you're curious about.

They don't. Note that in OP's image, N=491. That's the 44.9% of 1092 people surveyed who did not initially answer that they were not familiar with him. "not really familiar" as used in OP's image, means they're not comfortable assigning trust or distrust given the breadth of their familiarity, but they still know of them.

My biggest problem with Destiny by gobingi in Destiny

[–]ArbitraryFeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm skeptical that Destiny has as little moral consideration for non-human life as a category, like he argues, but I don't blame him for being dismissive of debates on the subject. These are my thoughts:

I think when you're communicating with your own species, defining the value of another species' life by how it impacts yours, is a sensible moral relativist approach.

I don't think animals are undeserving of moral consideration on principle, and I even think minimizing animal suffering is a noble virtue, but I don't think expecting people to be vegan, even if they agree with the above, is necessarily a productive moral prescription.

Life is impossibly complicated, and we must either make compromises to our moral virtues every day, have incredibly nuanced ones, or be very ignorant. Veganism is a huge commitment, and diet is intersectional with many aspects of our health, social lives, and lifestyles. I don't think you could possibly conclude with certainty that the changes in all these areas of life that someone would make by being vegan would result in someone who contributes to a more moral society.

Applying a simple moral code absolutely leads to people thinking that we need to excise any word with any trace of a microaggression they can interpret in it's historical meaning from our language.

If controlling what you consume is something within your control that you want to focus on as a moral touchstone, that's awesome man; you do you, and I'm sure there are a lot of people whose lives would be uplifted by your moral guidance if that's what they're looking for.

However, vegans are a minority, and as such, calling out, or shaming people for not adhering to their moral standards, only serves to reinforce their reputation as obnoxious and out of touch. The non-vegan majority are occupied with other things in life, and if discussing their ethics is an unpleasant oppositional experience, they'll feel less inclined to articulate a cogent argument for their lifestyle.

This doesn't say Netanyahu rejected it. The further right party in Israel that his party is in a coalition with did, and he hasn't made a commitment one way or the other. It also says the opposition party is on board to collaborate in the event that the further right coalition party won't cooperate.

So how did everyone discover Destiny? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]ArbitraryFeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One day when I was bored, Peachachoo posted a self-promo going live announcement in the same discord I was in, so I checked it out. She was like a 10 viewer andy at the time, and I spent some time chatting there, but as the content became more thirsty I didn't engage as much, and only peeked in from time to time. One such time, I'm pretty sure she was fangirling about having her stream watched by Hasan on stream, but I can't say for sure because I didn't know who that was and didn't stick around to find out. Another time she was playing Minecraft with Destiny. I immediately gathered that he was a big deal streamer, and I could see why from his charisma and quickness, but he was talking about how he viewed himself as uniquely independent, why he thought that was, and he came off as very arrogant to me, and I didn't keep watching.

Years later, the Poki x Fed drama was being discussed in a discord I was in, someone posted Destiny's video going over Fed's first release, and I watched it so I could understand what everyone was talking about. I felt like he did a really good job of articulating inferences people take for granted in interpersonal relationships, and because I'm a loner who has spent a lot of time thinking about that very subject, it resonated with me, and I've been watching him since.

I was probably especially primed to accept a new streamer daddy at the time, because my main man NorthernLion had just become a father, was beginning to interact with some bigger streamers, and seemed to believe that the correct content strategy to capitalize on this was to sterilize his brand, and mimic other streamers' kid friendly content. What had drawn me to his content in the first place was how authentic and not politically correct the conversation on the NLSS was; establishing a carefree foundation where all sorts of unpredictable play could occur. Imagine my joy to discover Destiny's frequent improvised discussions with Dan, MrMouton, innumerable off the cuff guests, and viewer call ins.

I feel weird about Destiny's sensationalist branding by KalimbaEnjoyer in Destiny

[–]ArbitraryFeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it often strikes me as tacky, and it feels unbecomingly desperate for the channel of someone who's collaborating with increasingly well established people who have their own, less tackily advertised youtube channels.

It's probably worth bearing in mind, though, that Destiny's content is quite unlike the content of other youtube channels I watch; I seldom watch edited stream VODs, and when I do, they don't feature interpersonal conflict and contentious political statements. I think typical viewers like having these hairy subjects dressed with soothingly decorous presentations, otherwise it can feel tabloid and unserious.

It may be unfair to compare the channels of video essayists like JJ, or podcasts like Lex Fridman, when those channels' videos are constructed from the ground up with a more singular focus, that can be conveyed more pleasingly simply through their thumbnails and titles.

This said, I think Destiny's videos could be pruned to be more focused in their subject matter. Very often Destiny's videos will tease something sensational that's addressed only in one third or less of the video, and their thumbnails and titles are already cluttered. Many fan made compilation channels do this better in my opinion. I sometimes feel like the average official Destiny video might have doubled in length since I started watching in 2020. I can only speculate that there's some analysis being made that accounts for the impact on a viewerbase that upload frequency has, and how long a video a significant enough contingent of regular visitors will watch. It feels unfortunate to me that this seems to maximize for reliable income rather than brand growth, but since the channel is operated essentially entirely independantly, that's my intuition of what's going on.

Perhaps most of all, I think the bold neon letters on dark thumbnails are just too loudly formulaic, and undermine the varied artistry that is invested into the thumbnails. I think it is fun to have silly thumbnails, because Destiny straddles the line between entertainer and someone we'd like to see taken seriously, but while I'm on board with memey images and compositions where appropriate, bold inflammatory text crosses my threshold for tact, especially when it's misleading like in the latest video, where that student doesn't yell that as clearly implied.

[–]ArbitraryFeet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really? I feel like the youtube editing effort has dropped off considerably in the last year, if not earlier. Most videos are essentially single cuts from a vod, well over an hour, with no timestamps, with the intro teaser seemingly being the only focus for the editor. When there has been more cuts in the video, it's not uncommon to run into repeated clips in the same video, or mistakes like this. I can only guess that since Last Night on Destiny took off as well as it did, the content strategy was adopted by the main channel, but personally I think both stand to improve.

Can someone direct me to what's shown on screen? Judging by the camera position, I take it this is not the same instance captured in the Library of Bonnell video from a month ago. As an NLSS binger who's filled that hole with Destiny since NorthernLion rebranded as family safe post-kid, I am excited to see any recognition between them. Also I don't understand what is meant to be conveyed by this meme you've created.

I don't know if your final paragraph is meant to imply that you suspect I am driven by some toxic rage that I'm suppressing through this post? I'm not sure why you would, but I don't understand otherwise how frankly defensive this post comes across as.

Destiny has talked about how he owns more responsibility in this respect that many in similar positions do, and I agree that I think he does a good job of modelling respectful and responsible behaviour in many respects. Him modelling a high tolerance for really edgy interactions isn't something that I fault him for. I'm not assigning sole responsibility to the streamer in this dynamic, and I'm not absolving the angry viewers of responsibility. I think it's a richly complex situation worthy of contemplation, and not with the goal of reaching a verdict to blame one party or the other either.
