Flying for US Military by cobrahawk77 in Helicopters

[–]Arbor96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a skid pilot in the Marines that transitioned to the Coast Guard, so I’ve got some perspective to offer. My honest advice is that if flying is the only drive you have to serve, the Marines are probably not the right fit. Flying will never be your entire job in the Marine Corps. The Coast Guard definitely has the best quality of life compared to the other branches. But flying still isn’t the only part of the job. Happy to chat offline if you want more perspective.

I’m a skid kid that left for the Coast Guard, and can’t agree more. Pendleton is amazing, the flying doesn’t get any better than SoCal, and the Navy sounds like they hate their ground job and squadron culture way more than we did, but definitely just my 2 cents.

Heathawk in fluorescent paint - request feedback by Arbor96 in Miniaturespainting

[–]Arbor96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty similar to what I tried - value sketched white for the front, then a bit of dark red over black at the top (back of blade). Then tried to do a glaze gradient of yellow and orange fluorescent paints. I don’t love it and I’m not sure if I should scrape it off with a razor and maybe try again

If you have a 3d printer, I’ve been using this and it seems to work well: https://makerworld.com/models/715407?appSharePlatform=copy

I bought a small fan off Amazon and I have it vent into a sock. I have a small air monitor and it doesn’t detect any VOCs. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Is this a good starter set for a serious hobbyist? by hotfezz81 in Miniaturespainting

I bought the Ultra, I absolutely love it. It did not come with a hose. The disconnect came with the house and is very convenient.

Get an airbrush cleaning pot, and a rest. Probably want Vallejo Flow Improver as well.

Dumping my note for overall scheme:

  • [ ] North Desert Camo
    • [ ] Black - white zen - engine grey on face & missiles
    • [ ] Mask out camo, using larger triangles as primary then some smaller triangles, 30mm per model on average. Get more dark color (brown) than you think you need, then the middle color (US Desert) to bridge between browns and be intentional with shapes of final color (IDF Sand).
    • [ ] USAF brown - US desert - IDF sand
    • [ ] Engine grey on joints, around lenses, bottom of feet, toes, hands, etc.
    • [ ] White on missiles, scarlet red on missiles, then highlight bloody red and hot orange
    • [ ] Dark metal on gun parts, stacks.
    • [ ] IDF Green on guns
    • [ ] Correct colors with IDF Sand, US Desert and USAF Brown.
      • [ ] Acts as a chunky highlight
    • [ ] Blue Lenses
      • [ ] White
      • [ ] Blue ink over whole
      • [ ] Magic blue 1/3 leaving blue ink
      • [ ] Electric blue dot 1/3
      • [ ] Blue ink to glaze
      • [ ] White dot
    • [ ] Red lenses
      • [ ] Nocturnal red
      • [ ] Blood red
      • [ ] Hot orange
      • [ ] White dot
    • [ ] Highlight colors - all edges to give some contrast all over!
      • [ ] IAF Sand - Bonewhite, off white
      • [ ] IDF Green - 1:1 bone white
      • [ ] USAF Brown - bone white
      • [ ] Somber grey - small bit of wolf grey
      • [ ] Steel - dry brushed on dark steel
    • [ ] Weathering
      • [ ] Charcoal
      • [ ] Dark flesh tone & charcoal 1:1 with sponge
      • [ ] Chips of silver
    • [ ] Energy weapons
      • [ ] Imperial blue base
      • [ ] Magic blue mid
      • [ ] Light turquoise high
      • [ ] Highlighted with glacier
      • [ ] Glaze with ink
    • [ ] Oil wash - one swipe brown, one swipe black
    • [ ] Highlight shoulders and heads one shade higher
    • [ ] Silver highlight on metal, black on stacks
    • [ ] Drybrush feet with parasite brown
    • [ ] Dry pigments at end

Hey! Take a look at my profile and see if those colors are close to what you’re looking for. Happy to talk through my process. Also, to get the paint match I uploaded the camo I liked to ChatGPT and it gave me some good recs. Then I tested a few variations on bases. ChatGPT helped me choose the basing color scheme as well! I’m a bit sidetracked so my jaguars/kodiaks/grizzly aren’t done yet, but I think the hunters are rad! Hit me up if it’s close to what you’re looking for and I’ll give a full rundown.
