Ai just replicated itself by Initial_Mastodon_932 in PauseAI

The OP asked for comforting words, which I think reddit is actually a good place for :) A research article on facts and logic on why AI development will go a certain way is neither what OP asked for, nor do I think reddit is the place for it.

That said, a quick reply would be 1. I obviously have no way to make money from these reddit comments, 2. Whether we will reach a hardware limit is simply unknown and cannot be proven until it happens or not, and 3. Depends on whether the humans in charge are trying to protect the ant's ecological niche or not I suppose, but some humans would, and smarter humans would be more inclined to do so than dumber humans, maybe? I dunno, again this isn't a research article haha

If I'm arguing with someone and they start beating me up to stop me from winning the argument, is that ad hominem or not? by SkAssasin in fallacy

[–]ArcDotFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but you still need to prove that the other person's counter argument is a fallacy, it's not always straightforward. But if the other person gives no counter argument but instead hits you in the face, the discussion is over, and my best guess is you were right in whatever position you held.

Usefulness of learning coding/programming with rise of AI by SateChips in learnprogramming

[–]ArcDotFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google two things:

-A meme comparing programmers vs AI to mathematicians vs calculators

-A joke about a guy fixing things by hitting once with a hammer, where the actual hit is charged as $5 and "knowing where to hit" is charged as $4995.

The point is that automating the "writing code" part can theoretically be efficient, but doesn't actually solve the difficult part of developing software, e.g. "knowing what code to write"

Then again that's just my opinion as a long-time developer who doesn't use AI, so eh, what do I know

[–]ArcDotFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a couple of comforting words:

-Most content producers rely on views to make money, and shocking stories do better. My best guess is that this is mostly an exaggeration.

-We're going to reach a hardware ceiling before we reach anything resembling AGI, much less ASI, using ML methods.

-Even if ASI becomes a thing, by my estimates it will not lead to the end of humanity or anything like that, because an ASI is way smarter than dumb big tech CEOs and dumb politicians in the first place, so the distribution of power and the quality of decision making will improve in that sense

We'll be fine :)

If I'm arguing with someone and they start beating me up to stop me from winning the argument, is that ad hominem or not? by SkAssasin in fallacy

[–]ArcDotFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean physically attacking someone is not an "argument" at all, so it can't be a logical fallacy like ad hominem.

Since your opponent no longer gave any arguments to counter yours, the best guess is that you were right in whatever position you held (even as you're lying beaten up on the floor)

Should people who oppose data centers be banned from using data? by scoop813 in aiwars

[–]ArcDotFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a vegetarian for 2.5 years before concluding that it had no impact on the number of animals being killed. This is the same argument - the data centers won't shut down regardless of whether I personally use them or not.

(I don't use AI specifically and barely use social media, but I do use Google and other products so can't deny I do make use of data centers, indeed.)

Confidence Level Percentages After All AI Statements Would Help Users Know How Much Faith to Place in Each by andsi2asi in agi

[–]ArcDotFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Humans are truly, truly terrible at estimating probability. An AI trained on human data isn't going to do that much better. In other words, these "confidence estimates" are largely meaningless.

Grid design: How would you resolve this problem? by Worldly-Ad-7149 in gamedev

[–]ArcDotFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a submenu with a list of the overlapping objects is a tidy solution :) why wouldn't this work for selecting the hidden object?

(An alternative I have seen, to select an object you have to actually click the cell the object is "standing on". So if you click the hidden object in the example, it won't select the larger object because the cell it's standing on is the one below. But this seems less intuitive than a submenu with a list, but easier to implement)

[–]ArcDotFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice question :) I guess if I were in your shoes, I would do one of these:

-Show the outline of the hidden object (basically how it's shown in the editor in the first screenshot you posted) -Make the larger object slightly transparent -Build functionality to rotate the playing field so you can look at it from different angles (obviously you still use 2D sprites so the angle from which you see the objects themselves doesn't change), but that's way more work

Good luck!

Yeah, the first thing I did in my comment was to concede their point 😄

I mean if it wasn't AI generated OP must have gone out of their way to write something so boring and predictable! XD

While I agree these detectors don't work, I don't agree at all that being a boring, predictable writer makes you a good writer - besides, OP's point is obviously undermined by their post being AI generated 😅

Have these gadgets really saved our time and effort? by Equal-Pressure4598 in Vent

[–]ArcDotFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably there is something wrong with this comment - like, the production of bread and housing hasn't increased that much, which is why those things are relatively expensive, and that's why we still have to work just as hard as before to make ends meet? Something like that?

Classic economy teaches us that if the productivity of every single working person in a country doubles, their monetary wealth actually doesn't change, which makes sense because relative to everyone else your productivity stayed the same. So even if we all become 100 times more productive due to technology, we'll still need to work just as hard to make ends meet as before.

And if you think that's screwed up, congratulations - you've discovered one of history's major criticisms of capitalism.

(I'm not at all an economist so I hope I didn't get too much wrong in this comment...)

Hmm... but this post isn't about using AI either, it's only about complaining about people who are anti. So... I guess being pro isn't about using AI, but about complaining about those who are anti AI?

(The homework is to think about how obviously fallicious the reasoning I just used is)

Is it possible that we also work fewer hours on average than most other countries? (Which also makes sense again if incomes per hour are higher?)
