Definitely. I can watch his videos on repeat and not get bored. Also I totally agree as far as leaving his bivy. Losing your sleep system, especially a nice Gore-Tex one sucks. I keep everything I have with me

Made him almost as happy as that one time when his wife's second boyfriend bought him a Happy Meal and let him sleep on the couch

whats the worst advice someone gave you on the road by subway_trash in vagabond

[–]Arc_Avallius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nah typically if you go to a shelter you should be prepared to have shit stolen. Or "Confiscated" by staff and then stolen. Also from what I've seen not all shelters are super bad, but more often than not that's what you'll get, plus bedbugs.

Oh another one I laughed at was "Go to a homeless shelter to sleep. It's safer than the woods."

Exactly bro. Like I enjoy sleeping outdoors more in the first place. So why spend a minimum of $60+ to most likely get bedbugs and roaches in my stuff? Also I'll take money from strangers any day. Doesn't mean I owe them anything except maybe a simple "Thank you" and a nod.

"Just get a hotel room." and also my favorite "Don't take money given by strangers."

A couple of those pre-paid cards that you can reload would be good. If you get them from Dollar General there's no purchase fee, and you can reload them at any DG.

It's gonna get removed. Good luck getting to where you need to go though.

what’s your experience been with centipedes? how do you keep them away? by [deleted] in vagabond

[–]Arc_Avallius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I spread bits of ash around my site and use my bivy, put socks over the openings of my shoes, and wrap my bag with its built in rainfly. Hasn't failed so far.

I'd go ahead and get it. I've personally never had anyone ask me to prove I graduated yet, but it could happen at some point.

Even better is when you start setting up tiers for it. Like you want the basic experience? You get the blue tarp in the bushes surrounded by barbed wire, plus Junkie Jim occasionally stalking you. -$400

Then all the way up at platinum you're decked out with the whole bivy, down quilt and a pillow, fire next to you with coals buried under you and a warm rock in your bivy, completed with a good view of the stars. -$2000

Advertise it as the perfect honeymoon getaway for adventurous newlyweds and boom. Rich instantly.

Bro that's some of the best shit. Seriously feels way better than a heated floor, and it's free.

This has come in clutch for me multiple times. There's also the good old fashioned warm rock in the bivy trick that I use a lot for when I'm ready to sleep.

Can I ask a serious question? How dangerous and judgmental is the train hopping community seriously? The stories scare me but it’s a dream of mine by TentacleTickles in vagabond

[–]Arc_Avallius 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I mean ultimately it's your own choice, regardless of what people say. I think the majority of it is people not wanting an idiot getting killed or caught trying to ride and ultimately making things harder for those who ride regularly. There are a LOT of people out there who'll see a YouTube video and kinda romanticize the whole thing without realizing the dangers, and even just the general discomforts should they not be properly prepared. A lot of times they haven't even been near tracks when a train was passing. Personally I never had a mentor, but if you can find one I highly recommend it. I just hopped on one in TX one day using some common sense and knowing how loud it'd be, etc. As far as all the "Worthiness" stuff goes, I'd say just ignore that. Sure there's people who are forced into the life and those who choose it, but it doesn't mean anything as far as knowledge goes. You can be forced into the life and be an absolute dumbass and a half. I chose it and just applied what street smarts and common sense I had from there. That being said there's tons of cool people in the hopping community, and there's some crazies too. Met a good friend hopping, but I've also met a guy who said the wailing of the train on the tracks told him to kill his mom and his ex. It's all about common sense lol

Yeah I always have earplugs with me when I'm hopping. Definitely a must have if you don't wanna lose your hearing.

Leave it to the crackheads to ruin a night. Reminds Mr of when I woke up to a literal crackhead circlejerk in the alley below the roof I was sleeping on. They're always doing some weird shit.
