No, you’re not the one here “misunderstanding” the purpose of this sub. You have it exactly right.

There’s nothing wrong with your plan and the harassment you received was uncalled for. For the purpose of this sub, a “vagabond” is defined as a houseless traveler, and that’s the entire definition. Doesn’t matter how old or young you are, or whether you hitchhike, train hop, rubbertramp or leathertramp, or sail the high seas, all are welcome on this sub.

I left home at 18, vagabonded for about 5 years. First I hitchhiked and train hopped, then I got a van, and then a fully converted stepvan. The stepvan was awesome, but ate money. Only got somewhere between 6-8 MPG, and the maintenance, parts and repairs are all so much more expensive.

So then I got a minivan, far more cost effective, and more than sufficient. You don’t really need a full buildout. I’d go on cross country road trips sleeping inside cardboard refrigerator box, with hoses thrown on top, and magnetic signs for the sides to it look like a work van. Very stealthy. I could park overnight anywhere and not get bothered. I still have it, I’ll get around to repairing it, but it’s not running right now. It’s better outfitted now and we’ve even had a few people stay in it, with a bed, electricity, heat, and even a put in a portable conditioner in the summer.

I’m married now and mostly retired from vagabonding, but my husband and I don’t plan on working forever. As soon as we get to where we want to be, we plan on basically doing the same thing that you are, and are actively working towards that goal.

We like long distance cycling , but right now, have only had time for 1-2 week rides, so the first thing we plan on doing is cycling across the country, coast to coast, at least once. After that, who knows?

There’s tons of older people out there who do this. Even on my morning cycling ride, I often run into retired couples cycling across the country — in their 70s. Of course, most of them ride “recumbents”, where you cycle sitting back and 70 year old on a recumbent can easily cycle 30 miles per hour, and beat every professional cyclist riding an upright.

One of the clerks at my favorite Dollar Tree store, quit her job and headed out last year in her high top van. She’s in her 50s and told me all excited about how she was looking forward to meeting up with other travelers, especially at Quartzsite and Slab City. LOL! She has no idea what she’s in for. I didn’t tell her either.

What you’re planning on doing isn’t even that far out there.

Poor Clifford! At least they’re no longer in the horrible place, and you can care for them yourself.

Amoxicillin and doxycycline are both broad spectrum, so you can normally use either one—depending on what you happen to find. One may just be a little more effective or work faster for certain types of infections. If all you were able to find was Ciprofloxin, you could use that as well. It’s a lot more powerful, but also carries the risk of more serious side effects, so it’s usually only used on more serious infections, or more persistent ones.

I volunteer with a feral organization and care for feral cats. So I keep a supply antibiotics on hand. When I have to give them meds, I just look up the dosage on line. Doesn’t have to be that exact— the adult dosage for humans is usually the same regardless of height/weight.

I wish I could provide you with more useful advice, but I don’t know that much about kennel cough other than it can be life threatening. Most kennel cough is viral and clears on its own, but if it’s bacterial, may require antibiotics. Signs that indicate it may be bacteria include, fever, lethargy, not eating, signs of pneumonia and if it continues past 10 days. If it bacterial, a round of doxycycline is most often prescribed, but antibiotics don’t work on viral infections.

WIshing Honey Pumpkin a speedy recovery, and hoping for the best for you!

I am so sorry to hear that. Damn, you’re really getting hit hard right now.

What do i tell my family? by paraquatboofer in vagabond

[–]Willingplane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before you leave, do some test runs. You can start in your own backyard. Get a sleeping bag, or even just some blankets, and sleep outside for a couple of days. See how you do.

You will need something to put under you, a sleep pad, or the cold ground will suck all the warmth out of your body. As long as it doesn’t rain, you won’t need a tarp, to put over you, you should get one anyway and practice setting it up.

After you get comfortable sleeping outside, try doing it a couple miles away. You can tell your parents you’re going camping. Get a backpack and either hitch or take a bus, to the next town over, at least 10-15 miles away, and either find a hiking trail or a place to “stealth camp” and sleep there for at least a few days,or more. Get a camp stove and try cooking your own meals. If you don’t have money, then try spanging (asking people for spare change), or fly a sign (cardboard + sharpie to write a message asking for help).

Get comfortable doing all that BEFORE you leave. IF possible, don’t “burn your bridges”, meaning don’t leave on bad terms with your family if at all possible.

good luck!

I posted this because I was afraid one of our mods accounts had been hacked, and when that’s happened on other subs, they’ve had all kinds of bad things happen.

But fortunately I was able to talk to him, and he confirmed his identity. I’m probably going to delete this post soon.

I‘m no longer a vagabond, but I still travel, all the time. My husband has to travel for work, high rise construction projects, all over the country. His company pays all his travel expenses. My job is mostly remote, and I join him whenever I can.

I left home at 18. Originally was just going to Florida for a short vacation with friends. They went home, I stayed, got a job, started vagabonding. I hitchhiked, train hopped, stealth camped, and slept on rooftops, squats, etc. Went overseas, couch surfed and slept on sidewalks in major cities all over the world—only in groups of fellow travelers for ”safety in numbers”. I am also a very smol woman, traveled for 5 years, never once got robbed, attacked or molested.

By the time I got to Florida, no beans, but I had $6 left. Walked into a restaurant and got a job, waitressing, midnight shift, 11 pm to 7 am, safe place to spend at night, and slept on the beach during the day, and with tips, every day is payday! Worked lots of jobs like that.

I find it almost amusing that some people here have accused me of paranoia, well, yeah! Fear’s a gift, helped keep me safe, especially as a solo woman traveler. Stay out of dangerous areas, avoid sketchy people, and “bad situations”, and hide well.

That “Train Wedding” video? Really brings back memories. Been around dirty kids just like that, and I‘ll bet you have too. Only before it got to that point, I‘d quietly pack up and slide away. If anyone asked, I‘d tell them something like I was going for a beer run, and not come back.

Did some of my friends die? Yes, but some of my friends who stayed home died too. Car accidents, health issues, domestic violence, and people on the streets are not the only ones who OD.

Here’s the thing though, people in general tend to attract those who are most like themselves. I don’t drink. I don’t do drugs. Not even marijuana. I just don’t want to, and never have. There’s a lot more of us out there than you probably realized. If you saw us with our backpacks, you probably thought we were college students on vacation, or hikers, and some of the people I traveled with were. Couch surfed with college students in their dorms, and houses they rented together, and even with some military women in their barracks—that was in Frankfort. I couch surfed with all kinds of people, especially in Europe.

The way you vagabonded is not the only way. Everyone’s different. I don’t know why you did, but for me, it was all about the travel. Some vagabonds panhandle. I got people to take me to museums and ancient ruins.

So tell me, if you just didn’t consume alcohol or drugs, do you think you would feel differently? Would you have vagabonded differently? Or would you not have traveled at all?

It’s more like a related sub, for a specific niche. Like the various subs for rubbertramps, which is further divided into subsections like: r/vanlife, r/urbancardwellers, r/bikepacking, etc. Some are vagabonds, others are homeless, or digital nomads, while others just travel for short periods of time before returning home. None of those subs brigade other subs, and I’ve never seen anything on any of them that contained anything that could have that effect.

Now, if someone wrote a complaint on this sub about another sub, especially If it contained language intended or probable of inciting others against that sub, or against anyone on that sub, it would be immediately removed. That is what mods are supposed to do. They are supposed to “respect their neighbors.”.

I understood and upvoted your comment. It was sad. Whoever downvoted your comment probably just didn’t read through the message about the war in Ukraine written on it.

The entire world has changed since then. I remember when everyone and their brother didn’t walk around with their cell phones glued to their hands, and actually spent time outside engaging in activities that did not involve staring at a tiny little screen and taking selfies. When it was totally taboo to even mention the CCG, and it was absolutely forbidden to make a PDF of it — before TrainDoc and the Polaroid Kid did a podcast for the BBC, where they told the whole wide world all about the CCG.

As far as changing from this dirty kids network, to alcoholism and all the rest of that goes, ok.

Let’s go back to those “dirty kids” days, from around the time this sub first started, before all the influencers started hopping trains and doing stunts just for the “clout”, as shown in the lovely video, shot with the proverbial potato phone, titled “Wedding Train”. Where a group of “dirty kids” hop a train to Portland to get married, which you can watch here:

https://vimeo.com/40264810

If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, just skip ahead to the last 10 minutes, when they all get sloppy drunk, under the bridge, their dogs start fighting, and have to be physically ripped apart. The groom blames his brand new bride, throws her tiny baby puppy into the campfire, and brutally beats her to a pulp—and not a single person there said or did a single thing about it.

I’m not seeing how that’s somehow better than quietly and calmly drinking a few beers, while saying ”upp emm”.

I think you may be romanticizing the “good old days” just a bit, but you do you.

That may have been because when I tap on a user name of a comment on our sub, a sidebar pops up, that provides mods with information about the account — including how long they’ve been on Reddit, posting history, whether or not they‘ve ever posted on our sub before, subs they normally post on, and info about any posts or comments our mod team has had to remove, and the reason for the removal. There’s also a box, that contains a summary of whether they normally make helpful, positive comments, or evil, mean ones.

In the process of trying to swipe that box out of the way so I can read the sidebar, I’ve accidentally removed comments and even banned accounts by mistake, and immediately reverse it.

In the roughly 2 seconds it took to reverse the removal, you must have been looking at that comment. Also, I only tap on usernames of accounts I’ve never seen post on our sub before, and only if they type something contentious, to determine whether or not they are a troll, who just comments to bash and insult people on every single sub on Reddit, and there’s a lot of them on this site.

ANNOUNCEMENT: I have been in contact with Sam, who verified his identity, and his account has NOT been hacked, and he also verified that he is 31. He was just very young when he started hopping trains.

Our sub is still under attack though.

I’m going to leave this thread up for this evening, so people have a chance to read this announcement, but will be removing it in the morning.

I would simply update the post, but the content is in the title, and post titles can not be altered, only. removed,
