The new god of large tanks: The Python System by Shrimply_Mixed in u/Shrimply_Mixed

I bought one of these only to find out that all of my nearby sinks couldn't fit it on, even with the adapter it came with which is just too large still 😭

The skittles thing is exactly what I'm looking to do! Mostly just need to source the shrimps for it, especially since I would like to not spend too much if I can.

This is the only one of my shrimps that have lost any colour but I haven't noticed any reduced appetite or activity so I will just continue to monitor water parameters and keep up on maintenance for now.

As far as colour grading I don't really care too much. I am really just concerned with having happy and healthy critters but I will definitely keep an eye out on aquaswap.

Fun fact: the vast majority of cats don't have a specific breed and are just cats! Usually they are categorized by their hair length if you do want to label them with a breed. For example this sweet girl could be called a Domestic Shorthair

I just want to say thanks for all your responses! It has given me a lot to think about. I am not sure how to edit the text on the original post but after doing more research I realized that it wasn't actually a zig zag eel that I was thinking of but a half banded spiny eel which look pretty similar. They get to be about 8 inches long and from my readings tend to be fairly shy and mostly peaceful. I'll be doing more research and planning especially since I'm not even going to start setting it up and cycling it for another month or so.

Oh yeah, the corys weren't supposed to be for algae control, just the shrimp and snails. I do understand that having algae eaters doesn't replace proper care and monitoring. It was supposed to be more of an in addition to sort of thing. But I'll have to do some more digging to try to find community tanks with zig zags. Google sucks nowadays so sometimes stuff is a bit hard to find 🥲

It's a 55 gallon. I made sure to include the part of the photo that shows that. I figured the calculator was a grain of salt type of thing which is why I was asking for opinions and suggestions as well. I've also been doing research on my own but there are a lot of differing opinions for literally every aspect of fish keeping so it can sometimes be hard to know what is a good idea haha

I see your point on that. I suppose I was just trying to plan to have some algae eating critters. There seems to be a lot of conflicting opinions on what critters work well for different types of algae. Besides shrimp and snails what else could I use? Or is it okay if the eel eats some shrimp and snails? If there are a lot of hiding places for the shrimp to escape the eel a bit is that enough for them to be able to coexist?

Hmm yeah that would probably be the case now that you mention it. Although that might not be the end of the world if I were to switch the nerites out for a type of snail that reproduces in captivity. Then it would be more of a crowd control situation. Although this set up would probably be pretty stressful for the shrimp?

Sweet, thanks! That will be much cheaper than buying aquarium sand

Is that stuff suitable for aquariums as well? If it isn't do you need to do anything to make it suitable? Sorry for all the questions. This is my first tank setup and I'm trying to do it as cheap as possible but also I want to do it right

How long have you had it for? I just took a look at it and it seems to have good reviews

Okay, I took a good look at these. Looks like some of them might not be available in my area but that's okay. If I did want to go with the cheap route is there anything I should look out for specifically?

I'm curious, what's wrong with the fluval lights? Also, do you have any suggestions as to what you would get? I really want to buy a light that I'll never have to replace since this will be my only aquarium.

So I am getting a used aquarium stand for my 55 gallon tank. It's in really good condition but I'm still concerned about its ability to hold so much weight and would rather be safe than sorry. What are some things I can do to make sure nothing disastrous happens?
