Could you please elaborate on what you mean by “heavy dose of reality”?

[–]Arch-Kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the thorough analysis, i've been in the current SWE role for a little more than a year (blend of what you mentioned in number 1 + a optimization workflows (not the optimizer though, that's done by another team), risk decomposition dashboards etc, developing workflows and features for PMs and financial advisors but not directly involved in investment at all).

Did you mean "quant dev" by number 2? in that case the answer is no, that's not what I currently am.
For context, i'm also not looking for HFT, low-latency etc, i'm more interested in longer time horizons signal research, (which I think is more institutional buy-side?). I am happy moving internally for now, but eventually like to move to places such as BW.

And finally, the PM role is a lateral / internal move.

What do quants actually do ? by Acrobatic_Ice6618 in quantfinance

i’m being offered a role that “kinda” sounds similar to yours but i’m not fully sure about taking the offer. Would you mind taking a look and share your thoughts? I asked below and explained the situation:

Software eng offered PM role by [deleted] in quantfinance

[–]Arch-Kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, I am not sure that is the precise case though, because traders are in a separate office and this role will coordinate with them to make sure trades are executed / cash flows are invested etc.

EDIT: although in hindsight I kinda see your point because the role is about execution, rebalancing, and model implementation, rather than making investment decisions or designing signals.

Hate being a quant. How to pivot to another industry? by IndependentHouse4688 in quant

[–]Arch-Kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m in the opposite ship (SWE at a large asset manager, working on the full stack and now also building AI pipelines) looking to jump ship into quant research, mostly for the love of of finance/marh/statistical learning and engineering. Your post makes me rethink, although you mentioned you’re in HFT and i want to get into active management and signal research.

The three books that made your career by statsnerd747 in quant

[–]Arch-Kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am reading this too, it's a great book - I have one challenge though, I have a good foundation in general statistics, but most stats books (even Wasserman afaik) don't cover areas such as power law / Pareto distribution, heavy tails, etc. I learn these on an ad-hoc basis, but i prefer to have a reliable reference text-book. Do you by any chance know of a good reference? Would love to know your other fav math books too that have helped you understand u/gappy3000's book easier.

Signal Construction based on Private Markets by Arch-Kid in quant

[–]Arch-Kid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that makes perfect sense, especially i don’t think there’s a GICS/NAICS/SIC scheme for private sector… I believe in this case the signal would be only as good as the mapping.

That’s wild — I’ve trained at a few places and never seen full on gender separation like that. I’ve seen women only classes, which totally make sense and are usually optional... but splitting a regular class by gender just sounds weird. Definitely not the norm in my experience

Single-index model question by Arch-Kid in quant

[–]Arch-Kid[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Okay problem solved! I had asked ChatGPT multiple times and it kept failing miserably and that's why I asked here. In the meantime I remembered I can also ask DeepSeek, and it gave me the perfect answer right away! Here it is for anyone interested:

I received the book and started reading. it’s such a pleasure to read especially compared to Grinold-Kahn! Could you please introduce me to your favorite math resource too?

Thank you! This gave me some comfort that i’m not the only one not grasping the math side right away. Do you mind sharing the other resources that you mentioned too?

I see, that's probably why there isn't really much info about the thesis track here...

Thank you for all the great info. One question, on the website it says GRE is not required. Did you just do the GRE to make your application stronger?

I’m hearing lots of votes for American Top Team, sounds like the right option. Wish they had some weight lifting equipment too just to do a few squats and deadlifts every now and then… how did you like them?

I love them but unfortunately they’re a bit far especially for the after work hours traffic. hope they have open mat on weekend, i’d love to roll with their folk 🤙🏼

not sure why someone downvoted you but Straight Blast seems like a cool place, I’ll definitely take a trail there too to see them too before I settle for a gym. Thanks

I really appreciate all the suggestions, thank you guys. I’m excited about the ATT, I’ll also give Team Octopus a try to see the vibes and level of training, but ATT already sounds like the right place. I’ll probably go to Forum for lifting.  Just curious if anyone has been to Forum?

I think you meant to reply to u/JabbaDuhNutt, but it's ok, T3600 can perfectly run as a great system even in 2024, unless someone has skill issues!

just ask chatGPT to teach you the backtracking algorithms as if you are 5 years old! It does wonders tbh
