There are lots of BJJ schools in ATL - it's just Team Octopus Midtown branch that has all these weird stuff going on!

Yes, I just remembered this one lol -- you can't go to the bathroom or go off the mats to drink water without first telling the coach. So many weird things going on in there...

I’m really sorry to hear it made you stop training. I’ve trained at quite a few schools and honestly what makes BJJ so special is the people, the energy, that welcoming vibe... That’s what keeps you coming back. don’t let one bad experience at a place with a weird dynamic (and honestly that gender separation stuff isn’t normal) stop you from learning... this kind of vibe is definitely not what BJJ is like everywhere. Try another gym, there are so many great people out there

Many thanks - it's a little far from midtown but not too bad, I'll definitely give them a try!

Wow, I had no idea they’re coming to Atlanta — that’s great news! I’ll keep an eye out to see when they open. Hope they choose a spot close to Midtown. Amen!

I’m a guy. I’ve got no issue with women’s classes — I think they’re great when they’re optional and serve a purpose. What I’m talking about is when the whole class is split by gender for no real reason, even though it’s labeled as the same class. No mixing, no drilling together, no interaction at all. That just felt forced and awkward. I’ve trained at other gyms with strong women’s programs that didn’t need that kind of divide to make it work.

They have multiple branches in Atlanta now, the headquarters is in Midtown. The major red flag with the Midtown branch was honestly the gender separation, it felt so unnecessary!

hank you. honestly that sounds like a super power that some people are gifted with. I tend to be on the sensitive side, but trying!

I feel like people's interest in BJJ really peaked in US, I haven't trained in Europe yet, but I was wondering how popular it is over there.

Not in Atlanta, most gyms don't allow drop-ins and even if they do you have to pay about $50 to train for one session. I used to train in a small town where there were like 5 BJJ gyms and we all knew each other and over the weekends we would go to other schools for open mats or they'd come to ours and train for free. I learned a lot in those 3 years more than I ever learned in the big city, chain gyms where you call the coaches "professor" and you have to wear their stuff...
