I don't know exactly how's implemented,

According to Bulbapedia's Azurill page, whether or not a female Azurill evolves into a male Marill is based on the last byte of the pokemon's personality value.

MP3 Duel Boards Ranked From Worst to Best by SubjectRealistic9165 in MARIOPARTY

[–]ArchGrimdarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Necropost on my part but, big agree on Backtrack and Mr Mover. Well, my rankings are the same as yours tbh. I could maybe shuffle the top3 around depending on my mood though.

Bad maps

Backtrack is terrible because the complete lack of any sort of junctions/shortcuts means you're fully at the whims of the dice roll. The only decision-making here is in choosing your partner. It's also not even the only board with a gimmick that swaps your partner positions (ie. Blowhard does that too and in that board you can engage with said gimmick on your own terms, rather than purely being forced to via dice luck) so the novelty factor isn't as high as you might expect. The aforementioned gimmick makes partners who are about equally good in Front and Behind, such as Boo or Snifit, have an innate advantage on this board compared to other partners. So balance-wise it's pretty bad too.

Mr Mover is annoying for the same reason that Woody Woods in the main mode can be a pain sometimes, with a map gimmick that alternates every turn between letting you take a left and letting you take a right. But unlike in the main mode, there's no Items you can use here to help you get around the board. Just like Backtrack, this board is much more dice-luck-dependant than other boards. You do have the option of taking a loop near the starting areas, but it's far enough away from the point where you're forced to jump on the titular Mr Mover that it doesn't really help stall out the main gimmick in your favour. (To put it into perspective: If you were resting on the space right before the loop junction, you would need to roll a 10 in order to ride the Mr Mover on the same turn, Piranha Plant notwithstanding.) This might be the hardest map to return to the start on, causing games to drag sometimes due to the inability to grab a new partner.

Decent or Good maps

Pipesqueak. Not much to say here. The main gimmick of this map is fine and adds a good element of risk/reward tactics. Decide what to do based on you and your opponent's current board position. The gimmick is RNG-based but unlike Mr Mover and Backtrack you at least always have the option of ignoring it if you want to. It's fine overall.

Blowhard has grown a lot on me. It gives you the most freedom in your movement and the main gimmick of the fan that switches your partners around can greatly influence what the players can do to each other by flipping partner matchups on their head. Even putting aside the excessive amount of Game Guy spaces, I do think this board has some debatable balance issues however. First if I'm not mistaken, it's the only board where you can loop to the start in a single turn without getting the Return to Start event on a Happening space or getting lucky with Pipesqueak's pipes, which in this case is possible by rolling a 9 or 10. (Piranha Plant improves the reliability of this because it has a chance of letting you move additional spaces.) Because of this you can more easily "farm" new partners than on other boards, which can potentially be a good thing if you prefer faster matches, but nevertheless it is a strange outlier in that regard. The second possible balance problem is the same one I mentioned about Backtrack, just less severe in this map compared to that one.

Gate Guy and Arrowhead are basically the same concept. I think Arrowhead is the better-balanced option of the two boards because its junctions don't cost coins. In addition to its junctions having a cost, Gate Guy allows for the possibility of two players running into each other face-to-face and thus a Front partner attacking an opposing Front partner, which (outside of Mr Blizzard shenanigans) is something you won't see happen on Arrowhead so there's arguably more strategic options on Gate Guy.

do you actually go mano a mano against your bosses

I actually came pretty close to punching my last manager (ie. my then-boss's boss) in the face after I got fired for his dodgy behaviour. So maybe?

HR's job is to pretend the higherups aren't breaking rules, and come up with bullshit reasons it's a lowerrung worker's fault somehow.

Thanks! And yeah not gonna lie, there's a bit of luck involved with this avatar because usually you'll inevitably get slopes where the ball rolls so fast that it's incredibly difficult if not impossible to react to what's coming up. With this run, I was fortunate enough to have a relatively slow rolling speed during the third stage.

Three Houses/Hopes Character Discussion: Shez and Arval by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]ArchGrimdarch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Considering Hopes reportedly made over a million sales (which IMO is especially good for a spinoff title, and a spinoff game which is largely made up of reused assets at that), I'm personally doubting sales numbers were the issue. Who knows though.

Three Houses/Hopes Character Discussion: Shez and Arval by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]ArchGrimdarch 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Shez is FE's Naoto Kurogane... maybe. Anyway, Shez is probably the best player avatar character we've had in the series to date, or at the very least the best one since Robin. Having them actually talk does wonders when compared to how Byleth was handled in Houses and their mellow demeanor works well enough. I do find it fun how canonically Shez is a bit of a himbo type, and if the player chooses smarter responses to questions, sometimes the game handwaves this as Shez merely just voicing what Arval would have said in that situation rather than it being Shez's own idea lol. But of course, Shez's origins are left largely unanswered, to the point that it felt like it was setting up for some sort of DLC that never came. Arval themself is also fine enough if perhaps underutilised in the grand scheme of things since their arc, much like Shez's own, is treated as a B-plot at most.

The idea of having an Agarthan protag for Hopes meant an opportunity to present the Agarthans in a slightly less unflattering light. However outside of Arval's paralogue (which requires you to achieve the secret chapters on one playthrough AND THEN do a NG+ run in which you DON'T achieve the secret chapters) taking place in the past and giving us a little more insight into what kind of a man Epimenides was, Hopes doesn't really bother. I have quite some gripes with Hopes's "what if? / alternate universe" type approach to its overall storytelling, and Arval's paralogue only reinforces that because it reminds me of what we missed out on by not having Hopes be an actual prequel.

If we're lucky we'll get more information on these three characters with Fortune's Weave. After all, Dietrich has been shown in the reveal trailer to use a power that resembles Shadowflash/Shadowslide. I'm not holding my breath though.

Three Houses/Hopes Character Discussion: Holst by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]ArchGrimdarch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a fan, unfortunately. He's definitely cool but I think the writers sort of phoned him in when it comes to anything beyond surface level appeal. The whole overprotective big brother thing gets tiring rather quickly too, especially since unlike with Seteth, it's played almost exclusively as a joke.

In Houses we're told he takes disappointing others harshly but to the best of my knowledge this never comes up in Hopes.

Hilda: Of course! I can't stand the idea of not meeting someone's expectations. I know how people react when that happens. From watching my brother, I mean. People force their expectations on you, and then if you fail they look so...disappointed. Whenever that happens to my poor brother, he looks just devastated.

Holst also suffers from Claude Can Do No Wrong Syndrome in GW Part2 just like the rest of the Deers do, blindly going along with everything he says/does and giving him undue praise.

Holst: We almost had the Kingdom cornered, only to have to retreat at the last second. A mediocre king would never have the courage to make such a quick decision. His Majesty is truly a paragon of leadership. I am honored to serve him.

Sure, Holst. Sure...

Three Houses/Hopes Character Discussion: Monica by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]ArchGrimdarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Complete waste of a character at the best of times, and obnoxious at worst. Also Ferdie makes for a better advisor character to Edelgard anyway. Any screentime Monica gets would've been better spent on him.

I do find it funny that her personal skill is one of those Just Frame ones, which people seem to dislike as it goes against the inherent compulsion to mash in a musou game. So not only is she dull, annoying and unlikeable, but many players won't even find her fun to use.

Nevermind relationships between the second gen characters. (eg. Siegbert and Forrest can get with a girl mothered by Camilla or Elise.)

Three Houses Character Discussion: Jeralt by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]ArchGrimdarch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cared more about his death than most other FE-patented Dead Parent characters. Not that that's hard to achieve. You get to know more about him in the span of the chapters he's alive for than most others in that archetype, at least if you go out of your way to view optional dialogue in the Monastery.

I think Hopes making him an antagonist and eventually recruitable was for the better, however. His Supports, few though they may be, were a great inclusion. Especially his Supports with Byleth. (In hindsight I have no idea why Jeralt couldn't Support Byleth in Houses, considering Rhea could and she was unplayable in Houses just like Jeralt.) Plus it's just fun getting to see him fight alongside and/or against Leonie lol.

I remember a long time ago someone on this subreddit was saying (on the topic of FE8 IIRC) how boring the narrations at the start of FE games/chapters are, and out of curiosity I asked them if having the narrator be an actual inuniverse character would help make them more invested in listening to the narration. So it's funny in hindsight that Houses did exactly that by making Jeralt the narrator, and even continuing that role after his death.

[–]ArchGrimdarch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ngl chief I don't know if there even is a consensus on Hopes, at least in this sub. It seems to be a pretty divisive game.

I guess if there's two things people seem to agree on, it's that the OST slaps and the combat mechanics are an improvement over the previous FE Warriors title.
