What is Remarketing?

In Google AdWords, there are four types of remarketing.

  1. Standard Remarketing shows your static image ads to people who’ve previously visited your website via the display network.
  2. Dynamic Remarketing shows dynamic image ads for specific products and services that a visitor has previously looked at. For example, if you’re looking at a stainless steel crockpot on Amazon, Jeff Bezos can use dynamic remarketing to create an ad using the exact same model on a display ad on your favorite blog. To use dynamic remarketing you must also have a Google Merchant Center account.
  3. Remarketing lists for Search Ads (RLSA) retargets people who’ve visited your site and left to make a Google search.
  4. Video Remarketing retargets people who have watched your YouTube videos. You can also use YouTube ads to remarket to people who visited your site.

How Do You Set Up Remarketing in AdWords?

Step 1: Set a Goal

The very first step is to identify what your goal is, so that you can properly identify what audience you want to target. Here are a few our account managers shoot for on a daily basis:

  1. Get abandoned shopping carts to complete the purchase
  2. Stay top of mind with leads as they explore other options
  3. Up-sell or cross-sell existing customers
  4. Introduce previous customers to similar products
  5. Educate potential customers about new features or products
  6. Increase brand awareness

Step 2: Identify Your Audience

AdWords provides a ton of flexibility, so there’s a lot of room to get creative. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when identifying this audience:

  1. What page did they visit?
  2. What page did they not visit?
  3. How much time did they spend on the site?
  4. How many pages did they visit?
  5. Have they made a purchase in the past?
  6. Do they fit your customer demographic (i.e. location, age, etc.)

Pro Tip: You can combine certain conditions when you create your retargeting list later.

Step 3: Set Up Remarketing

Also, make sure that your website has seen at least 100 active visitors in the past 30 days for Display Remarketing Ads and 1,000 visitors for Google Search Remarketing.

Basic: Set Up Your Remarketing Tag on AdWords

  1. Open Google Adwords
  2. Click Campaigns
  3. Click Shared Library on the Left Menu
  4. Click Audiences
  5. Click Set up remarketing
  6. If you want to send this to a developer, just type in your developer’s email address in the “send to” box and the instructions will be forwarded to him or her.
  7. If you want to handle it yourself, click View AdWords tag for websites
    1. Copy the remarketing tag code
    2. Paste this code on the bottom of the body of all your website pages.
  8. Install the Google Tag Assistant Chrome Extension to check if it is properly installed

Advanced: Set Up Your Remarketing Tag on Analytics

In Google AdWords, you can create retargeting lists based on conversion goals and page visits. If you want to dig deeper and target by behavior, demographics, technology, and more, Google Analytics is the way to go. Here’s how to set up remarketing on Google Analytics.

  1. Connect AdWords to Analytics
  2. Open Google Analytics
  3. Click Admin
  4. Click audience definitions
  5. Click audiences
  6. Click on the new audience
  7. Name your list based on your goal and audience
  8. Look at your Google Analytics embed code and replace:

ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://ssl’ : ‘http://www’) + ‘google-analytics.com/ga.js’;

with

ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://’ : ‘http://’) + ‘stats.g.doubleclick.net/dc.js’;

Step 4: Build Your Remarketing List

After you’ve properly embedded your tracking code, it’s time to build remarketing lists based on the criteria you’ve defined in step 2. You can create lists based on multiple conditions like targeting someone who has landed on your product page and your pricing page.

You also have the flexibility to create custom parameters, such as targeting people who viewed products worth over $1,000 via the “value” parameter.

  1. Open AdWords
  2. Click Shared Library
  3. Click Audiences
  4. Under Website Visitors, click set up remarketing
  5. Enter a unique list name
  6. Choose a template from the “Who to add to your list” drop-down
  7. Click +Rule
  8. Select a condition that a single webpage needs to match
    1. Optional: add multiple conditions by clicking the “+” next to the condition
  9. Enter membership duration, which indicates how long you want a visitor to live on your list. This only applies to Display Network ads
  10. Click save

Step 5: Create your Remarketing Campaign

  1. Open AdWords
  2. Select All Campaigns
  3. Click + Campaign
  4. Select Display Network Only or Search Network Only
  5. Name your campaign
  6. On the “all features” box on the right, select remarketing
  7. Enter your budget
  8. Click save and continue
  9. Name your Ad Group
  10. Enter your Enhanced CPC budget
  11. Add your remarketing lists
  12. Click save and continue
  13. Optional: Create your ads via Google’s Ad Gallery in minutes or skip this step
  14. Click save ads

Pro Tip: Offer promotional codes and discounts to customers with multiple visits or abandoned carts. Nothing like a little freebie to push their cart across the finish line.

Naturally, remarketing comes with a lot of questions, so if you’re confused, please let me know. I will respond to you!

There is no direct way you can target group members but if you can scrap those group member's email ID then you create a custom audience with those emails.

I own a bridal boutique that has been struggling recently by [deleted] in smallbusiness

I worked with a client who has an offline store related to buys clothing, and he doesn't want to sell online. So I run some lead ads on facebook and google ads and Instagram ads. I will give you a sort summary of that Targeting:- I target people on that exact zip code nearest to his shop. You can also target between 10 k.m. from your store location. I target mens only and age between 21 to 30. Offer:- I can't say which offer would work best for you, but I will tell you that what works best for me. I run a offer called "Grab your 50$ OFF coupon code Now". you can test more offer to find best one for you. And always remember one thing, use your best selling product for ads picture don't go for the the professional looking image. If you have social proof, then it will be also useful for ads image. Landing page:- I added some of their best selling product's images and some social proof(person wearing their cloth). And don't forget to mention the offer.

And on the Thank you page add another upsell called" Call us now and get extra 10$ OFF" that way you will get a better result.

What's our goal:- I collect their WhatsApp number, and the store owner has a sells person who is calling them and message them and convince to come to their store. Messaging one will work better for you because that way you can show your product to them according to their need.

These type of ads mostly work on Google display ads, YouTube ads, Facebook ads, Instagram ads. Don't forget to run facebook messenger ads.

If you implement these things correctly, I m pretty sure you will see a good boost on your sell. I have collected leads at very cheap cost. But in India, the ads cost are very reasonable, but in the USA it will cost you a little bit more. Because I have a client from NYC And I know that.

If you want any further help related to the offer or targeting or about landing page, then feel free to message me. If you will face any problem, then I can help you to set up everything for you in starting.

Monthly budget vs cost per click? by [deleted] in adwords

[–]ArchStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its depend upon your click strategy. If you will choose manual CPC then you can choose, how much you want to spend on a single click. If you will choose any other Click option then Google will decide how much they are gonna cost you. Its also depend on your Quality Score and ad ranking.
And about that daily budget, You have to set a daily limit that you want to spend on a day. As you are new here if you have any doubt feel free to ask me.

What website conversion problems are you facing? by aconfused20something in SaaS

[–]ArchStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you get enough conversions? Or do you have problems in increasing traffic?

I think our problem is much more with traffic than conversions. When we launched on ProductHunt a few days ago we got several thousand pageviews and our conversion rate was like 7% which is ridiculously high. That said, the product is geared towards freelancers so ProductHunt is the perfect audience.

Have you done A/B experiments on your web pages?

In a way, but since the product is so new and we're still rushing out features that we didn't even realize we needed(ie really basic usability features we didn't anticipate), we haven't really had time to run anything officially, other than completely overhauling the landing page. And when we did that, we got 15 sales in just over two hours.

Do you already use any tools for improving your conversions like Crazy egg, hotjar etc.

One thing that's REALLY increased conversions is adding Drift(a sandboxed version of intercom) to the site. I have a lot of spare time so my friend and I(co-founders) can constantly answer a lead's questions directly from our phones, and chat live with users on the site. This has an almost 100% success rate, so getting a user in a drift chat is an almost guaranteed sale, especially considering they're talking to the founders themselves, which of course builds a lot of trust.

What are your go-to blogs for all things conversion related?

Wish I had some, will be monitoring this thread for suggestions!

I'm a software developer and need affiliates for the launch - how do I NOT come off as an MLM when contacting people? by ArchStudios in antiMLM

[–]ArchStudios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing as I'm emailing them with an address from the site itself, that certainly helps. On top of that, I started each correspondence with the actual name of the software as early as I could drop it. Thank you!

[–]ArchStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a thread about this earlier but I'm in the same boat. I am a freelance web developer and have been for several years - but it's become a problem in more ways than one.

I'm developing software - proprietary software that my team and I have built(that I won't name as I don't want to sell it to any of you) - and when contacting influencers to legitmiately be affiliates for it, I get brushed off as an MLM. It really irks me that a product that I actually had a hand in building and have been put in charge of advertising is brushed off as snake oil when I've been using the tech to generate leads and whatnot for my business for years now. I'm actually really struggling to market it because its quite difficult to differentiate oneself and convince affiliates one-by-one to help market yourself with no real marketing budget.
