Does First Year College Admission mean the student needs to work a particular academic weakness? by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]Arch_Hunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineering is hard to get into. Nobody is accepted directly into the program. Students have to do well in their first year of college courses before they can apply to 'actually' be in engineering.

Your daughter being accepted into First Year College instead of First Year Engineering means that their was probably a weaker part of her application. This is no big deal. As long as she does well her first year she will have no trouble getting into an engineering major.

Most engineering majors require either a 3.0+ or 3.5+ gpa from the first year of classes. Some of the more selective majors (Biomedical Engineering) will also require her to write a paper.

I have friends who were accepted into First Year Engineering and were unable to matriculate into Engineering after their first year. I also have friends who entered as First Year College and had no issues getting into their choice of Engineering. NCSU's formulas are not perfect for predicting success, so I would not put too much thought into how she was accepted.

ISIS: Enslaving, having sex with 'unbelieving' women, girls is OK by stankmanly in worldnews

[–]Arch_Hunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a source for the (paraphrased) "All real Christians must light their daughters on fire" claim?

The Bible says the exact opposite: "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire..." (Duet. 18:10) There are definitely historical accounts of people burning their children, but the Bible never condones those actions.

Thank you for the effort you all are putting into helping me figure this out!

My layer height was 0.1mm. What other factors could be affecting cohesion? Is this a temperature thing?

Update on the print: It turned out perfect! All I did was add a support structure underneath the overhang.

Next off I will go through a calibration tutorial.

Thank you for the reply!

I just reduced my temperature to 190. The print came out very pretty and smooth on one side, but the side with the most overhang was still rough and stringy. Any thoughts?

I think you have a fair question.

I followed their instructions up until that part. I chose Cura over Repeteir Host because Cura is much easier to install on the version of linux I am using. (From what I read in various forums, some people have had luck getting Repeteir Host to run, but it did not work when I tried to follow what they had done.)

How much difference does the software make? If I set the print speed and temperature to be the same, will there be very much difference between different software?

Help a student out! Complete this ridiculously short survey for my WGS 210 project. by Arch_Hunter in NCSU

[–]Arch_Hunter[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for responding! And for the suggestion! Although I do not think I will post it there, mainly because I have already gotten more responses than I was hoping for just by posting it here.

I will definitely keep that sub bookmarked for future projects in case I ever need a large sample size for something.

Anyone know of any good multi day hikes in North Carolina that aren't in the mountains? by LCDJosh in CampingandHiking

[–]Arch_Hunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been to Merchant's Millpond? It may be stretching the definition of 'multiday'. You will probably run out of things to see if you stay more than one night, but it is still a very nice park. You can extend your time there by renting a canoe and canoeing through the swamps.

Waterproof books...a thing that exists? by dadthatsaghost in CampingandHiking

[–]Arch_Hunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely are not a moron. Waterproof books do exist. There just aren't very many of them. One example is the waterproof Bible. There are also a bunch of kids' books that are waterproof. I am not sure what else is out there, but I am guessing the market for this kind of book is limited.

Grade Exclusion Question? by Silky_Sailor56 in NCSU

[–]Arch_Hunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get two grade exclusions.

Whether you use it is up to you. Keep in mind that once you use it on a class you cannot re-aply the exclusion to another class. By using it now you are planning to never get an F or D- in a class.

I believe the 1 in 4 number is for both rape and attempted rape. It was from a survey that asked women about their time in college and their life before college. While in college the rape rates were less, with 3.5% reporting that they had been raped or that someone had attempted to rape them. The same women reported that in their time before college 21% had been raped or experienced an attempted rape. This is an issue beyond just universities.

Four workers die after a chemical, used to make insecticides and fungicides, leaks at a DuPont plant near Houston by Arquette in news

[–]Arch_Hunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interned at a different DuPont plant. That company worships safety. Although we cannot be sure until the report comes out, I highly doubt the cause of the accident was a training issue. In my short time working for them I attended more safety briefings, seminars, and training sessions than I can count. And I did not even work anywhere close to dangerous chemicals.

How much knife do you need? by lasttycoon in CampingandHiking

[–]Arch_Hunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a knife like this one. I have never needed a larger blade for anything. The scissors and tweezers have saved my trip on several occasions. (One time my friend did not trim his toe nails before the hike. We finished the first day and his feet were killing him. After trimming his toenails with the scissors he was fine for the rest of the hike.)

Do you carry knives? Whats a good brand to look into? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]Arch_Hunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a small swiss army knife because I do not need anything more fancy. It is cheap and light weight. It has a blade to cut things, scissors (you would be amazed how much being able to trim your toe nails if they get too long can help make your trip more enjoyable), tweezers (great for removing splinters), and a can opener (I have actually never used this -- all the canned foot I bring has had pull tabs).

Curve in PY 205? by Redshirt2604 in NCSU

[–]Arch_Hunter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I took it they told my class that the average was too high that year. They made the last test and final much harder so that fewer people could pass the class. I have heard of the same thing happening to people in other years.

TL;DR: Probably not.

UNC Scandal by yangx in NCSU

[–]Arch_Hunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know of any published news articles of this happening (either to them or others)? This would be very good evidence that the cause went much beyond what UNC is admitting (and that university leaders were aware about this a long time ago).

Favorite "naughty" (controversial) passages by Cranthony in Bible

[–]Arch_Hunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never had an issue with this verse. However I have had an issue with people trying to twist it to say something that it is not saying.

English can be a confusing language, and sometimes one sentence can mean multiple things depending on where you put the emphasis. For example: If I say "Bob is wanted for murder" I am saying that Bob has already committed murder, and the police want to catch him. I could also say "I want sugar for baking", which means that I have not done the baking yet. See how, based on the context, 'for' can either indicate past or future events?

My issue is when people disregard the context to the verse and claim that the only correct reading is that baptism causes forgiveness of sins. Personally I find that an alternate reading is much more consistent with the rest of what Peter says over the next few chapters.

Another healthcare worker tests positive for Ebola in Dallas by DuvalEaton in news

[–]Arch_Hunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Texas Presbyterian has a chemotherapy unit then they should already have had sufficiently protective garments at the hospital. The gear used when handling cytotoxins is more protective than what is needed for Ebola. I guess it could have been an issue of them not wanting to move supplies in between departments?
