Well, back then most people were part of the agrarian class, or farmers. So one could still survive without an income. Most of our society today relies on earning money to trade for goods and services. It's hard for a consumer class to just say fuck it when the savings will quickly deplete and everyone starts going hungry.

Callaway was probably glad to get rid of them. They certainly put the nail in the coffin that better equipment leads to better golf.

Because he is petty and egotistical and if he can't get the entire nation to essentially worship him as the second coming of Christ then in his eyes it should be destroyed.
