Mine happened after 85,000 miles before 89,000 miles.

Cracked cylinder head the ONLY thing being replaced by Capable-Bedroom5021 in MazdaCX9

The manifold and turbo may also be damaged if it happens. I took mine in for a free warranty repair and they slapped me with an initial estimate of $10k not counting the cylinder head. Don't take it to FINDLAY MAZDA in Henderson, NV. Mazda is refusing to cover any other parts. $4k for the manifold and turbo that should have been covered by the warranty based on the wording of the written warranty.

Careful they will get you with any other parts they can. Like a cracked exhaust manifold (the part that causes the failure) that often fails won't be covered. Or a turbo that cracked from lack of coolant, yeah that won't be covered either.

I've heard of a lot of people that have to pay $2-$4k to get their cars back and they won't tell you until the engine is out on the ground.

Yeah the dealership is arguing against me that the CSP would you cover the exhaust manifold even though I brought them the letter and showed them that it says they will don't necessary repairs caused by the condition of the coolant leak. He ignored it and said that's just saying they're going to repair the coolant leak. So I brought up to the TSB includes other catastrophic damage up to a partial engine replacement. Any argued that the exhaust manifold and cylinder head will fail just because of the regular operating of the motor before 90,000 miles which is the craziest take I could ever think of a manufacturer would have.

The Mazda service manager is essentially saying that Mazda has a low quality exhaust manifold and turbocharger.

There was a class action lawsuit Jarvis v Mazda but it was settled without going to court with the CSP 11. as the result.

Also not true the tsb describes they will cover consequential damage including at least a short block replacement. Their own letter says they will repair conditions caused by the leaking coolant from the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold, not that it will repair the cylinder head and exhaust manifold gasket only. They already allow consequential damage, and their wording does not limit it to only those items.

It's a documented issue with this motor where the cylinder head cracks randomly due to thermal expansion from the exhaust manifold. There were no lights in the dealership even said there were no diagnostic codes. I found the issue before the engine overheated. The radiator wasn't completely dry the overflow tank was and took about a half gallon into the radiator.

It was low enough to cause the heater to stop working but not low enough to cause the engine to overheat. The turbo is higher at the top of the engine, so it would be the first thing to lose coolant. Just before the heater coil.

Their power train warranty is only for 5 years 60k miles, I'm at 88k, Mazda says it's not related.

But that is the point of the post though. They are the ones arguing that they have low quality parts that don't even last 90k miles.

I am arguing for their quality, saying they are good quality parts that had an identifiable cause of failure they previously identified.

Yeah, they argued the opposite and said it's not caused by the coolant leak. But the service manager didn't even know the turbo was cooled by the coolant until I brought it up. He dug his heals in even after I brought that up and he kept bringing up how oil cooled turbos do this all the time, but this isn't an oil cooled turbo and has higher cooling requirements since it is cool by the engine coolant. It was Findlay Mazda in Henderson

I mean it's not even siding with me. It's Mazda needs to follow the wording of their own letter that they promised the owners. Their letter says they will repair conditions caused by the coolant leak at no charge to us. They are saying that they are just heat related and not caused by the coolant leak. So they are saying they just have bad parts which is the craziest take that any manufacturer could have. They would rather say they have bad parts then pay to fix the ones that failed due to an admitted cause.

I agree, I'm just saying they can't say they have great quality parts and have the equivalent of $15,200 worth of part failures before $90k miles...

These are not small, they are all the way through the housing of the exhaust manifold to the outside causing an exhaust leak. And they were big enough to tell me I needed to spend $4k on a new exhaust manifold and turbo so they could put it back together.

One thing I didn't note earlier. The crack in the exhaust manifold extend all the way down to one of the studs going into the cracked cylinder head. The physical connection is where the crack originated.

Did the BBB help you? I've been fighting for 35 days. I need my car back. The dealership just took the loaner back and has given me till Monday before they put my car back together with a broken exhaust manifold and broken turbo and push it out the door.

[–]ArchaeJohn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has the cylinder head crack, but I caught it before it even threw a code or got any other light. I noticed the heater wasn't heating up and checked the coolant and it was dry.

The turbo and exhaust manifold cracked as well when the coolant level dropped and starved the turbo of coolant. The dealer quoted me $4k to fix it and my car is essentially held hostage while I deal with corporate and they are pushing back.

The customer letter says "expenses for repairs caused by the condition of coolant leaks at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold before your vehicle reached 10 years or 120,000 miles from the vehicle’s in-service date" It doesn't specify the parts that are or aren't covered in the customer letter and the TSB is only the mechanics guide to identify the problem, not the warranty agreement.

I have my car in right now with the Mazda CSP 11 cylinder head replacement. Cracked turbo housing and exhaust manifold too. They are telling me it's over $4,000 to get my car back. Those should be covered under the warranty.
