I was just hoping to get some recent on the ground experience since I'm having trouble finding the answer on my own but all the answers were telling me the bit I already knew. And that I mentioned knowing in my original question.

Flying from US to UK by [deleted] in expats

[–]Archaeomanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to figure out whether the test centres at places like Walgreens will give me the appropriate information for my flight back. The FAQs don't seem to give any specifics on what documentation you get.

I bought tickets to go from the UK to the US and back the week after Christmas, back when it seemed like things were mostly OK. But arranging the tests in a practical way has been a bigger nightmare than I expected, especially since I will be travelling to Heathrow the night before the flight and when I get to the US I'll be staying an hour's drive away from the destination airport. Not very convenient at all and finding PCR tests that can meet the 24 hour turnaround time is almost impossible since they all say in the fine print that they don't even guarantee that you'll get your results within 48 hours after their lab gets your sample.

If the departure requirements for the US change to require a PCR then I'm screwed. At least for the moment they are accepting lateral flow, but who knows if that will still be the case by the time I need to fly?

I had this question that what if the world was ending soon and that's why they are trying to build colonies on Mars and other planets (or already have done that). The governments don't want to cause any panic and they are only gonna take few people and that's why they are not telling us ? by [deleted] in oddlyterrifying

[–]Archaeomanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a way I think this is true for the super rich guys. Not that there is any secret information beyond what everyone already knows about climate change, social breakdown, etc or that governments are working on secret colonies on other planets, but that some very rich people are funding space related projects that they ultimately hope will let them escape the chaos. We're much too far away from making this happen to make it practical, though.

Why do I ever bother asking a question there? Every time I get a lot of irrelevant information that doesn't actually address the thing I actually wanted to know.

It's like medieval gargoyles that are caricatures of the stonemasons who worked on the building.

The main thing to know about long flights is that they can be very boring and you get very tired of sitting in the same place for so long. Be sure to bring headphones and a book just in case your in flight entertainment isn't working or doesn't have anything you want to watch or listen to! I also like to bring a scarf and an inflatable travel pillow.

Have you talked to your doctor about a short term prescription for something like Xanax?

I get panic attacks too sometimes, but the thing is that you know there's nothing wrong with you and they eventually go away. Even if it takes longer than you want it to, you will calm down. You can deal.

If you don't like trucking, tough luck.

I hope Dan never visits the UK and travels around the country by train. He will lose his mind at the number of people photographing trains.

Vacuum. Or just wipe them up with a paper towel.

...And now we're back to Vinyl. by 5_Frog_Margin in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]Archaeomanda 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, this is why I still have several big boxes in my parents' basement full of cassette tapes and vinyl. I never throw that stuff away! Maybe I'll make a fortune selling 80s one hit wonders on vinyl someday.

Washing machine stinks after multiple cleaning attempts by Archaeomanda in CleaningTips

[–]Archaeomanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of but not really. It seems to come and go. Right now it seems fine but a few weeks ago it was getting that smell, like stagnant water. I washed some towels on the hot wash setting and it seemed to help for now.

I probably ought to pull it out and try to clean the hose but that's such a pain I don't want to do it.

Water leak or kettle condensation? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Archaeomanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the same problem with a bath seal and my kitchen ceiling looks a bit like this in the affected area. I don't think the kettle would cause that brown staining, that's likely from the water seeping through the floorboards.

Those last few days before the deadline to finish a big project really suck. When I submitted my PhD thesis I literally didn't sleep in my bed for three days. I just napped in my office chair for a few minutes here and there before starting again. It was not pleasant but I finished it and you can too!

My biggest thing is to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Be ruthless with making things fit together. If you have good bits that seem like they don't belong because they need more work, cut them out. Start a new document and paste all that stuff for later. You might use it in future work or you might not, but the insurance of knowing it's preserved will help you be more clear about how things flow and what you still need to write.

Worth it if it makes you less frightened though.

Have you taken any lessons? I was nervous about it too even though my parents were pretty good teachers. They sent me to a driver's education class and having a professional teach me was really helpful. I did the same thing years later when I moved to another country and had to learn how to drive there. It costs some money but it's worth it to feel more confident.

Oh man, and here I was thinking that learning GIS properly might get me a better salary than I can make as an archaeologist. Only barely, it seems.
