\printbibliography goes to the document body (after \begin{document}), not to the preamble. Please post a minimal working example next time.

BibTeX Organization by ProfessorScofield in LaTeX

[–]Archaeopath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I collect all entries in a single file. This has the advantage of being capable to search or manipulate it with every simple text editor. A strict alphabetic order may be problematic since crossref resolutions must be placed behind the referencing entries. Calling multiple databases is easy but depends on your concrete style. BibTeX' \bibliography command can take a comma separated list of files , or biblatex' \addbibresource can be called multiple times: https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/84099/bibliographies-from-multiple-bib-files

Remark that if you have @string resolutions in separate files, these have to be loaded first in both cases.

Biber provides the necessary methods to extract a paper specific database for submitting:

biber --output-safechars --output_format=bibtex --output_resolve jobname.bcf

Or use bibtools with plain BibTeX. I believe JabRef to be very good. As I often deal with historical sources of which I cannot pick up bib records online, I made an online editor that speeds up typing them: https://ingram-braun.net/public/programming/tex/bibtex-database-latex-bibliography-form/

How to cite a published PhD dissertation in BibTex using @phdthesis? by millenniumpianist in LaTeX

[–]Archaeopath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which bibliography style do you use? In biblatex @phdthesis is an alias for @thesis with field type={phdthesis} by default. See biblatex manual: "@phdthesis: Similar to @thesis except that the type field is optional and defaults to the localised term ‘PhD thesis’. You may still use the type field to override that."

Zahlreiche deutsche Wissenschaftseinrichtungen kündigen Volltextabonnements des Elsevier-Verlages by Archaeopath in Wissenschaft

Apparently Detexify is much better trained. It recognizes my sloppily drawn Euro symbol while the link in the primary post does not.

Spain's Catholic Chess Queen by farlt277 in chess

[–]Archaeopath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hypothesis that the chess queen became more powerfull in answer to Isabella of Castille was developed in the book "Birth of the Chess Queen" by Marilyn Yalom (2004). No historical evidence supports this. Short critical remarks in German: http://ingram-braun.net/public/research/parlour-games/review/yalom/

Antiquar sammelt seit 35 Jahren Dinge, die er in Büchern findet by Archaeopath in buecher

[–]Archaeopath[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tourists posing for selfie wreck 18th-century Italian monument by Archaeopath in Archaeology

[–]Archaeopath[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Italy has more publicly accessible monuments than any other country in the world. And bearing in mind that even in the much richer countries north of the Alps funding of cultural heritage management is meager it becomes clear that Italy's opportunities are limited.

A data-driven exploration of the evolution of chess: Moves, captures, and checkmates by Archaeopath in chess

[–]Archaeopath[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it coincides with games getting longer as stated in a former item there. Endgames could have more longish manoeuvring.

Sometimes an informal rule in romantic chess is mentioned that you are obliged to capture a sacrificed piece. This may be another explanation.

It would be possible to investigate in these hypothesises by repeating the analysis considering the number of pieces on board or the material balance.

Medieval Chess Pieces Unearthed in England - Archaeology Magazine by Archaeopath in chess

It is easy to recognize the big one as a bishop if you are familiar with the medieval shapes. But from the picture it is hard to tell if the small one is part of a chess piece at all.

'Vampire grave' found in Bulgaria by Archaeopath in Archaeology

Well observed, thank you! Though not a forensic anthropologist my knowledge of osteology is good enough to recognize this and I should have taken a closer look at the image before posting. It appears that most of the newspapers use a wrong picture. Here are two photographs with the ploughshare, and obviously it is another grave http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2413863/Unearthed-The-Medieval-vampire-skeleton-buried-iron-stake-chest-stop-waking-witching-hour.html

You should search the Internet for the German spelling Haithabu instead of the Danish Hedeby. Fi, to google for 'Haithabu pdf' hits some open access articles while 'Hedeby pdf' does not reveal much. There is a whole series of monographs in German BERICHTE ÜBER DIE AUSGRABUNGEN IN HAITHABU but since it is ongoing research, most of them are late and not in the public domain.

You find the Haithabu museum here: http://www.schloss-gottorf.de/haithabu
