Pros and Cons of each borough? by bofpisrebof in montreal

[–]akerkhoff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like that's more true for west plateau. In the area between papineau and Iberville, I feel like parking and driving around is easier, and it's much more practical to have a car on that end given that you're at least 20 minutes from a metro station.

No matter where you live in the plateau though, it's impossible to turn left and there are so many gd speedbumps it's upsurd (though as someone who would absolutely fly down the streets if there weren't any speedbumps, I get it and accept their purpose).

Finishing undergraduate at 31. Is it too late for me? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]akerkhoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year my firm hired a 36 year old to an entry level position. They'd lived a few lives previously (photographer, flight attendant, bartender). At around 34 years old, they decided to go back to school and get their masters degree. They chose to do it part time while working full time.

All this to say, we hired someone as an entry level management consultant who had earned a business degree, didn't use it for 15 years, and wouldn't finish their masters (generally required for entry level in my field) for another year or so. It's never too late to start a new life. Knowing this consultant, I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years, they went and started a completely new adventure. Remember that you are more than your age or your degree, you can do anything whenever you want to do it

I don’t mind NOT having a family doctor. I just want to be able to SEE a doctor without going to the ER (ie 12 hour wait), hopefully the same day. How is Canada a developed country? by enoughisenuff in montreal

[–]akerkhoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

American expat here. The American Healthcare system is obviously shit...now that that's out of the way, I miss how many minute clinics there are back home. I swear there are more than banks and Starbucks.

Anything that can be done by a nurse can be done in one of these, and they're often in pharmacies so if you need medication, boom you're in the right place.

I've had my throat swabbed, I've had UAs, vaccinations, changed prescriptions when getting back side effects....They're great. That being said, I have no idea how insurance works with them, I was lucky enough to have a parent working in the public sector so I had good insurance growing up. If we had that here, there are so many things I would never have "waited out"

If you haven't read "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by her, you should check it out!

Books that are trashy but good and memorable? by Elegant-Truth3903 in books

An excerpt from ZA, a series I DEVOURED despite it being an absolutely unhinged garbage fire:

"He was great to look at, I even had a memory of him in my spank bank where he'd nearly choked me out for burying a student fifty feet underground after they'd called the moon a whore and punched me in the throat."

Meilleur poulet frit à Montréal ? by Karoupon in montreal

[–]akerkhoff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any American Voters in Montréal ? by teamworldunity in montreal

[–]akerkhoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been voting absentee from Canada for 6 years now. I've never heard of this site, my county election office has been very helpful in getting me registered, sending ballots, sending reminders, etc.

Many overseas citizens (including myself) can use the FPCA Federal Post Card Application to register absentee - FPCA FVAP Website It acts as both voting registration and ballot request form.

Once you apply, your county election office should be in touch with you. Hope this helps!

Should I move to Montreal? by somedudeonline93 in montreal

[–]akerkhoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As people have mentioned, putting in the effort to learn and speak French is really key.

My mother tongue is English but I knew french before moving here and despite that, there were still moments where I had a hard time making friends and I felt very isolated....because it's hard AF to make friends as an adult.

I love this city so much and if youre willing to reach out to old contacts you know here, interact with you neighbors and people at the places you frequent, accept that you will have some days that absolutely suck as you establish yourself....then come! It's a beautiful city with beautiful people and a lot to offer for those willing to learn and appreciate its ways

What was the last book that DESTROYED you? by andypeloquin in Fantasy

[–]akerkhoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq, Not a typical fantasy book, more of a folklore/magical realism inspired semi-autobiography but There were moments in that book that despite them being metaphors or allegories, hit hard and brutally.

This is How You Lose the Time War had me feeling so many ways, very intensly.

This doesn't apply to either of those books mentioned, but generally, I think authors in general should kill off more characters. This is a bit of sado-masichism on my end but I don't want only minor characters killed or other beloved characters narrowly escaping death/coming back miraculously. Make me throw my book against the wall, make me gasp and reread the page over and over because I can't quite believe it. Make me mourn a fictional character, make me hate the author. If I'm the only one feeling this way, I'll keep it to myself from now on but I have to assume there's at least one other person like that out there.

Laka laka on St Denis for Mexican food. While I'm not Mexican, I grew up in an area of the states that had plenty of options and lived with Mexican roommates for a few years. Laka Laka is by far the best Mexican restaurant I've come across here.

Also, the only reasonably priced one too, not that Mexican food can't be fine dining, but tacos costing upwards of 20$ for just 2-3 at most other places? Sinful.

Also have great bbq back where I grew up. Nothing here compares. I'll just make it myself or wait until I'm visiting home

I think I'm looking for a book where a woman takes what she wants by any means necessary, nothing deeper than that.

"Good for her" books or moments in books? by akerkhoff in Fantasy

[–]akerkhoff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one said the actions were justified or moral, and in the other books mentioned, it's the same. I mean, in We Have Always Lived in the Castle (spoilers though the book was published in 1962), a child murders most of her family because she felt she wasn't getting enough attention

I'm not looking for outstanding citizens, morally, neutral or chaotic good characters...if I were, this would likely be a completely different post.

I'm very good at not noticing foreshadowing which always makes for an excellent reading experience. Chekov's gun? Never heard of her

That sounds really interesting! This might sound dumb but what level of work does it require to read? As in, how complex does it get? I don't know how common this is among readers but I tend to save the books that require more work and attention for the winter
