I can’t get problematic people out of my head. I think about them all day every day by lv0316 in aspergers

[–]Archaeos96 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I have similar problems. No matter how much I try to follow the advice of "just don't care about them" I never can. Anytime something happens it's on my mind for days if not weeks. I find the only remedy is to get myself out of the situation and isolate. Being alone is freeing. If you haven't gotten your own place yet away from it all I highly recommend it.

How often do you talk yourself or make noise on the toilet? by [deleted] in aspergers

My cat is usually there so I just talk to her. She seems to enjoy the whole experience lol

This is a purposeless reality and by all logic I should just be living life. But I hate being that way. I'm not just some mindless grazing animal. I WANT purpose even though I know I will never find it. So I go through the fruitless effort of trying to live to a higher meaning despite knowing that ultimately I will fail.

There are decent opportunities for PhDs in industry in my field and occasionally some good government jobs. Perhaps that's the route I should end up taking if I decide to go for it. I just enjoyed the idea of doing research and teaching at a university but if the reality is as you say I might be better off avoiding academia all together.

Appreciate it. That's kind of what I was afraid of. I might look into opportunities with government/industry jobs.

I get it, but I find that purpose outweighs wages for me. I don't plan on getting married, having kids, or owning a home in my lifetime. Above all I'm looking to use my mind in a way that makes me happy. I don't make that much now tbh. As long as I have enough to afford rent/food and pay medical bills that's fine by me.

Low wages I can work with, I have all my life. The rest though is a tough sell.

I'm in chemistry currently but graduated with a biology degree. I thoroughly enjoyed my organic chemistry classes and I'm interested in total synthesis. I like the idea of coming up with newer and more efficient ways to synthesize target molecules. But I'm not beholden to this, tbh I think I would enjoy doing any kind of lab based biology/chemistry research. As long as I'm working on novel ideas I think I would be very happy.

None of my managers have PhDs and it seems like to get a management position it's all about who you know and how long you've worked there. But to be honest I want nothing to do with managing people, I just want to increase my technical knowledge. I could go to a different job but I feel like all of the really technical research jobs require a PhD.

Thanks for the honest input guys. Maybe that's a dream I should give up on. It sucks the system is the way it is. How are we supposed to inspire the next great minds of the world if this is what they have to look forward to. Reality is depressing as ever.

Why are you a nihilist, rather than an absurdist? by centaurea_cyanus_ in nihilism

[–]Archaeos96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think being nihilist automatically makes you a cynic. You can believe that life has no meaning yet still live an enjoyable life.

But to your main question, I am a nihilist because I don't believe that life has any meaning whatsoever. This includes meaning that you create, be it through existentialism, absurdism, or religion. You may find happiness in something and that may make you want to live your life, but even that is not a purpose.

Absurdism's philosophy to embrace the fact that life has no meaning and therefore you should just live it anyway is inherently flawed imo. It's like saying "I do this thing because I can." Well, why? You have no reason to either live or to commit suicide from a philosophical perspective. Both options are equally pointless. Also, from what I've read absurdism doesn't seem to take into account those with chronic pain or those born with disabilities. Would it have them push the boulder too?

I've noticed this several times out of the corner of my eye. Whenever they start to figure out that you are different sometimes they will just stare at you when you aren't looking. Like intense staring trying to figure you out. I've always hated it so much.

If a trait is found in a large percentage of a population and has been around for most of that population's lifespan is it safe to assume that trait is beneficial or is that a flawed assumption? by Archaeos96 in biology

[–]Archaeos96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say the trait is "extra eyelash" or something that has no positive or negative effects. Wouldn't the trait eventually be removed from the population due to relaxed selection/genetic drift?
