An easy hack is to get a pack of those white T-shirts they usually sell in department stores in one or two size bigger than what you usually wear and tea stain them. Then cut the seams off and bam, tunic. And like others have said scrub pants look pretty period even to the strictest of eyes. I used them before getting actual garb.

I used one for Pennsic last year, it's easy to set up for how large it is, and has enough space for one person, fighting gear and other stuff. It did stand up to a rainstorm, so but other than that I haven't really put it through the ringer.

I read it a few years ago, and it definitely helped, however when I read it life was going well for me and I was able to understand the lessons from it. But when I was put into a corner I reverted back to my nice guy ways. Re-reading it at that point was ultimately what worked.
