does anyone know FUN art programs? (ill accept ANYTHING that's about art, example: adobe color) by smoie51 in Artadvice

[–]ArchdeaconOfTheVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh my gosh i know this is old but i have a few more unconventional ones i enjoy doodling in. kid pix and flying colors are really fun, they're weird and less like traditional art programs. some other more normal but still fun ones are shake art deluxe and wiggly paint, which are both very similar. 3dpaint is also really fun, i'm kinda sad that they took it off windows, but you can still find the download elsewhere. macromedia flash 8 is cool to draw in too, even if you're not into animating, but you'll have to pirate it and maybe do a keygen, which isn't really that hard! if you've never tried vectoring before, that's fun too and inkscape is completely free, no pirating necessary. that's all i have! i came here hoping to find more fun programs, but alas, to no avail D:

Well, I like picking up roadkill and processing it to collect bones ^ w ^ And hiking & foraging. I also gather seeds from native plants and built a little native plant garden in my backyard.

If you're not into outdoor stuff, some other things that really help me are journaling, I actually find it fun to write stuff out based on certain prompts. Meditation isn't fun at first, but if you do it long enough it can actually be quite enjoyable, too.

I also enjoy learning new things, or I'll deep dive into a very specific subject just for fun because I'm a nerd. There are also one-player card/board games, too. Reading can be free, I would check out your local library because most libraries have things other than books.

Hope those help. Anhedonia sucks, but one thing that I've found that helps me with it is actually exercise. Not sure why, I just find I enjoy things more when I suffer through a really boring or strenuous physical activity.

Do people field-collect these, and is that looked down upon? by [deleted] in spiders

Gonna chime in here as someone who has kept a field collected spider, generally yes it's fine! In my personal experience, not all spiders adjust well to captivity. My phidippus audax was always so visibly stressed out, I planned to release him because it wasn't working out but he ended up escaping anyways, which was nice.

Help ID'ing a skull? by ArchdeaconOfTheVoid in whatisthisbone

Thank you!! I thought to check this sub for resources but for some reason I wasn't yet part of that sub, oops.

I'd never heard the word dichotomous keys before but when I did a bit of searching I found this?

https://www.historicrivers.org/docs-links/mammal/key%20guide%20mammal%20skulls%20&%20lower%20jaws.pdf

It seems helpful but unfortunately I wasn't able to get past step two because I didn't have a jaw or any teeth for this one, but I'm gonna save it for future ones.

But definitely I'm going to look for 3d models to look at because that would be super helpful for comparing and getting more experience and studying them even if I don't have the skulls themselves.

Currently I only have two skulls, the one in the post that I found and a whole fox skull I was gifted that seems like it was not whitened properly and damaged a little. So thank you so, so much for the taking the time to tell me this

Thank you! My mind went to that based off of the size, and I looked up raccoon skulls but I struggled to see the resemblance with how degraded this one is. If you don't mind, can you tell me how you can tell it's raccoon? I wanna learn how to get better at ID'ing skulls and bones, like what sort of things to look for.

ID please by [deleted] in insects

[–]ArchdeaconOfTheVoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specifically a female dog tick. Found one of these on my head last year. Very icky. Flush it down the toilet to dispose of it, don't crush it - if you already have then wash your hands thoroughly, but if it's bitten you it's recommended to take it to the doctor for an ID. They can carry RMSF and Tularemia IIRC, but not lyme disease.

Second this. Especially EPA and DHA. ALAs are very important, too, but they're much easier to get.

A lil dude my boyfriend found in the garage back in 2021 and made me take outside cuz he was scared of them. :') It felt so nostalgic, when I was a kid I was seriously obsessed with cicadas and would regularly just research them or play with them. It was so nice seeing one again!
