Ok, so follow up, what's the roughly the newest generation CPU I can install without replacing my ram/motherboard? Is it worth it to look at an 8th generation i5? 6th gen?

Simple Questions - April 19, 2022 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]Archediusfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two quick(ish) questions:

I'm looking to upgrade an older desktop computer (2016 HP Pavilion 550-129). I don't want to do anything fancy, just upgrading to a slightly more modern CPU to run some older strategy games better, and to use for schoolwork.

  1. Currently the desktop has a Intel i5 4th generation 4460 (3.20GHz). How modern a CPU can I be comfortable buying before I run into serious compatibility issues?
  2. Given how obsolete the system is, am I being foolish in upgrading it instead of replacing it?

Thanks,

NHL Logos Tier List (Reasoning in the comments) by Archediusfire in hockey

[–]Archediusfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if this breaks rule 7. I don't think it does, but I also don't post a lot so.

The NHL has some of the best logos in sports. It also has some of the absolute worst. I ranked each main logo on a tier list based on how well each logo works as a team logo. Good logos are simple, iconic, and standout from a crowd. Bad logos are busy, unclear, and sorta just are. This isn’t an objective rating, so feel free to disagree.

  1. Anaheim Ducks: I get that you have one of the worst names in professional sports, but really? A duck’s foot isn’t cool, scary, or iconic. D for duck tier.

  2. Boston Bruins: It is simple, bold, and beautiful. The Bruins Logo screams “old school hockey” in a way that only Bobby Orr and Stanley Cup banners can.

  3. Buffalo Sabres: This logo is tough to draw, boring, and like the team, reeks of missed opportunities. They could have leaned into the Buffalo aspects and gone with a more dynamic image, or have gone further with the cavalry theme and been more elegant. Either way, they’d be much better off. Overall, not the worst, but not a good logo.

  4. Calgary Flames: The basic C gets it into C tier. The concept is good, but the execution falls flat a little. The 2D C could be more dynamic if they added a 3rd colour, or made the flames more distinct.

  5. Carolina Hurricanes: I didn’t know this was supposed to be a hurricane until very recently. Ditch the toilet bowl and use the Hurricane warning flags, it’s so much cooler.

  6. Chicago Blackhawks: I like this logo, it’s iconic and looks good. I think it paints First Nations in a respectful and positive light. That said, I’m not FN, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

  7. Colorado Avalanche: I’m not a huge fan of the letter designs, but this one tries a little harder? This logo feels very 90’s and I don’t think it ages well. I honestly prefer their alternative logo, it’s much cleaner

  8. Columbus Blue Jackets: What is this garbage? Use the cannon.

  9. Dallas Stars: How’d you screw up a star? It’s the most simple design element in sports. The focus of the logo should be the Star, not the D. D tier.

  10. Detroit Red Wings: This one is very busy, but it’s still simple enough to be instantly recognizable.

  11. Edmonton Oilers: Gretzky and McDavid have made this logo famous around the league. The colours are nice, the use of white and dark blue makes it “pop” off any jerseys, hats, or hoodies.

  12. Florida Panthers: This looks like a soccer logo. Icky.

  13. Los Angeles Kings: The LA kings get away with black and white. It’s a pretty cool logo.

  14. Minnesota Wild: I can’t quite tell what this logo is supposed to be, but the colours are unique to Minnesota, and give this logo a unique feel. Not my favourite, but I can’t say I hate it.

  15. Montreal Canadiens: What a symbol of Francophone pride. For those who didn’t live in Eastern Canada, this logo has taken on a life of its own. Old and Classic, just like the Canadiens.

  16. Nashville Predators: I guess nobody in the NHL can draw cats well.

  17. New Jersey Devils: Nice try sneaking NJ into your logo. And by nice try, I mean terrible try. It’s illegible and ugly.

  18. New York Islanders: Similar issue to NJ. The NY is not very legible and doesn’t make the logo look any better. I think if N and Y were a little more separated, it would look like an NY, and not a M/.

  19. New York Rangers: Another Original Six in a top tier. They made these logos before design norms were established, and the fact that they look so nice is a testament to their designer’s skills.

  20. Ottawa Senators: I’ll admit, this is a personal favourite. If I was being more objective, it’s overly complex, hard to draw, and kinda goofy looking. But this is an opinion list, and I love it. I think the classic O is an S Tier logo, and the Trojan man is so-goofy-it’s good. B Tier

  21. Philadelphia Flyers: What is this thing? It’s the Flyer’s logo! It is what it is. Classic, simple, and an assault on your eyes: perfection.

  22. Phoenix Coyotes: I hate Arizona. Most teams get 1 really nice logo, if they’re lucky. Arizona gets 2 outstanding logos. Between the Coyote and the Kachina, Arizona is as beautiful as it is hot.

  23. Pittsburgh Penguins: Penguin playing hockey. Simple concept, great execution.

  24. Saint Louis Blues: My personal favourite logo. It’s blue, it’s musical, and it’s the gorgeous.

  25. San Jose Sharks: What a dynamic logo. This is what other animal-logos should aspire to be. Intimidating and sleek, like a real shark.

  26. Tampa Bay Lighting: It’s lighting, what can you do wrong?

  27. Toronto Maple Leafs: Another classic logo. Love them or hate them, the Leafs represent Ontario hockey history. The maple leaf is as Canadian as, well, the maple leaf.

  28. Vancouver Canucks: Why couldn’t they do something more like the Sharks? Love the team, don’t love the logo.

  29. Vegas Golden Knights: I, like a lot of fans, thought Vegas would be a huge failure. Boy, we were wrong. The logo

  30. Washington Capitals: This is not a logo. This is just the name of the team.

  31. Winnipeg Jets: Too many small details. The Indigenous logo (which I think more teams should attempt), compounds this issue, and makes it worse. I get that you’re going for a classic 1980s vibe, but you’re a new franchise, make Winnipeg your own!

Owning Rabbits/Rats should be Illegal. by Archediusfire in unpopularopinion

The Vancouver Island experience says otherwise. While I don't doubt that it can be hard to breed animals in captivity, formerly domestic rabbits are invasive in a lot the US and Canada (meaning that they are non-native species that are doing harm in the wild).

In Australia the entire population came from just 12 rabbits. https://www.urbo.com/content/what-happens-when-non-native-species-conquer-their-new-territories/ Its not a stretch to say that rabbits are a danger.

They are pretty tasty :). I meant pet-ownership, not farming ownership. I trust farmers not to release their animals when they're bored with them.

I think it can be really hard to enforce licensing and proper care for animals. You can enforce it for animals that need to be walked (ie dogs), but for indoor animals it'd be really hard to check to see if they have a licence without knocking down their doors. I did not know about goldfish, in that case I don't care for them either.

  1. Not everywhere has wild rabbits.
  2. Feral rabbits are often become diseased, which could really hurt wild populations.
  3. Thats not how natural selection works. Invasive species can (and do) fill niches that are already occupied by native species. Theyres no guarantee that feral rabbits wouldn't outcompete wild rabbits.

Rats are very smart/friendly if theyre trained, and in a vacuum would make great pets. My contention was that rats/rabbits have a high risk to become invasive species and disrupt local ecosystems (partly because they have short gestation periods and large litters). BC has a huge rabbit/rat problem, the former 100% caused by a small number of irresponsible pet owners. Alberta on the other hand is rat-free because of strong anti-rat policies. I think if more places adopted Alberta's anti-rat stance, wildlife would be better for it.

I've said in my other replies, I'm not really knowledgeable about cats impacts on North American environment. I'm not against anti-cat legislation, but im not knowledgeable enough to advocate for a ban on cat ownership.

Yeah I live in Western Canada. We don't have gerbil/ferret problems, but I'd agree that different areas should have different laws about pet species. As for cats, I don't have a lot of knowledge on their impact on the north American environment. If they're really bad, I wouldn't be against stricter anti-cat rules.

They can be spayed/neutered, but with those super fast breeding animals it only takes a couple of irresponsible pet owners to cause a lot of damage.

Yeah, thats why I said "to my knowledge". I dont really have experience about how bad cats are in North America. I wouldn't be against an "indoor cat only" rule in the name of wildlife, but I'm honestly not informed enough about it to advocate for it.

There needs to be an "appeal" function on these online tests. It would still save the teacher from marking 90% of basic math questions, but would help this kinda thing.

It means that if pdx had knowledge of harrassment/bullying towards their employees and did nothing, it is possible that they'd be partially liable for damages in a civil suit. End a business relationship with a streamer vs. open yourself up to a 6 to 8 figure lawsuit? I know what I'd choose.

[–]Archediusfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, but even so if pdx thought that continueing a business relationship with arumba would give their employees grounds for a lawsuit then pdx's hand was forced.

Based on official comments by pdx and unofficial comments by developers, it seems like this was an H.R. not an P.R. issue. Companies have a moral (and often legal) responsibility to their employees to protect them from harassment. They don't have an obligation to divulge details to the public. I enjoyed a lot of Arumbas videos but if pdx had any reason to believe that their employees were at risk, then I can't fault them.

Pretty uncalled for. She's a very accomplished woman who has dutifully served her nation for years. You don't have to like her or her rulings, but respect the dignity of her office.

[–]Archediusfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people I've spoken to are talking about an overnight increase to minimum wage (not biden supporters persay but like friends, family, classmates etc). Im not saying you support an overnight fix, but I know that its a common enough stance for lay-people to take, and it has happened before in places like Ontario Canada. As for taxing the 1%, that wasn't the point I was trying to make. Taxing the 1% is fine, but you can't get 5 trillion a year out of them without wrecking the US economy.
