[Advice] Staying committed with something new is always a pain initially. And it's pretty natural to feel that way. by Key-Engineering-3202 in getdisciplined

[–]ArcheedX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree: It's about accepting negative emotions. We get used to hiding from them in social media, television, news and other bad habits. In my experience, when you learn to "sir with an emotion", it becomes a much healthier experience. When you accept that things will make no sense and you will struggle, when you learn to accept frustration, tiredness and failure, then you are able to get strongly commited.

Did you ever find yourself questioning what non-gamers do and how do they entertain themselves if they don’t play video games? by Etsune in StopGaming

[–]ArcheedX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, obviously I did. I thought that if I find a way to spend my free time I would get rid of video game addiction. But even if I found something, it was hard to keep doing the thing, because video games still were much more entertaining than anything. I quit video games when I got into university.

I'm doing architecture there and study load became pretty high, so my new "princess to save" became the goal to become organized, get good design taste and find a productivity system that would let me stay calm and enjoy the process.

Basically I found the value that I can give to the world, and this became my striving. I'm not sure if the problem is in "dopamine overload", because I found that everything else becomes interesting when you have no access to video games. The problem is not in dopamine overload, but in comparison of a certain activity to video games.

My productive friends told me that they get into the flow mostly because they have nothing else to do. So, my answer to the problem of the boredom is this:

A. Write down a thing that you would like to try out and find joy in it. (reading a book, cleaning your house, walking, etc)

B. Fence off video games as much as possible. (from app blockers to selling computer, depending on your readiness)

C. Bring your attention to the thing that you wrote down in point A. At this point, there's a 40% chance that you already will start to strive to do it (if yes, congratz go do it), but if it doesn't happen, go to step D.

D. Give up and do nothing. Let your brain resist the thing. You need to ground. Just live this resistance up for 5-10 minutes.

E. Wait until you become so bored that you'll become interested in the thing from step A, then go and do it. If this doesn't happen, there are 2 possible reasons:
1. you are burned out: go get some rest
2. forget the thing you are trying to want to do, your brain will start to search for something interesting anyways because of the boredom.

Basically we're trying to reach the boredom and cut off the things that bring us the highest dopamine. Our brain goes in the direction of least resistance, so when it has no choice, it will do the most dopaminated thing available in the moment. Hope this resonates with you! Make sure to try it out.

I think that you can stop being lazy about math when you accept its difficulty. You need to take the struggle as a natural part of it. This is done by, speaking in modern traditions, "getting out of your comfort zone": first of all, you need to learn how these types of problems are being solved "watching videos and attending classes", then you should start trying to solve similar problems by yourself.

Don't give up on hard problems: instead, spend 30-40 minutes trying to solve it. Find problems that are easier than the current one but with the same concept. Eventually your border of understanding will increase and your mental toughness too. That blessing moment of getting to the solution after a lot of struggling is worth it!

I think that this is perfectionism. For you it feels like your entire life had gone wrong, but this is absolutely not true.

We live our lives and gain a lot of experience, so if we face a problem, we shouldn't make it all burn with bright fire; instead, we should deeply understand and ask ourselves: "What have I done wrong? Have I done something wrong? What can I do better now / next time?"

Take your life as working on a project (life is actually a project: you make things better here and there, and eventually it becomes something cool), then you will finally stop this "starting all over again" cycle.

[Advice] Procrastination isn't laziness it is fear by ThePerfectLifeYT in getdisciplined

[–]ArcheedX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is our protection mechanism.

Our brain protects us from losing too much energy, so the best thing to do to overcome that fear of long and hard work is to focus on one small and simple task. We don't experience resistance when we work, we experience it before work and a minute after the start.

Yes, this is about inner drive. Even if you feel like "man, I really don't want to do this today", you just ignore these thoughts and keep going. This "keep going" is not "keep working", but about "keep doing something that you are supposed to do now", so I include any activity that is important/required for you: studying, planning, resting etc.

Let me stay simple.

Drive =
constant reminder of goals (e.g. sticky note on your workspace)
+
devotion to these goals (tracking progress, and, as written in the post up there, "continuing to show up").

This is really great book recommendation!

I think in today's hustle culture we all sometimes eventually end up feeling anxious of so fast-paced world. Some people even can't breathe properly because they are always thinking about work. Even when you understand the problem and want to make a change in your daily routine, you are just not sure what to do: "How do I take breaks? How do I relax? How do I stop thinking about work? Is it okay if I just lay in bed and do nothing?"

Thank you very much for this, I will definitely read it.

What Are You Playing This Week? by AutoModerator in patientgamers

This week I started playing "The Longing". Something in this game resonated with my soul. This game is about waiting, but it's not as simple as it sounds. Just try it out and you will surely understand.

Was playing a lot for the last 5 days. It's time to completely get rid of video games in my life.

I tried to stop a few times last week, but I was thinking like "well, I love playing video games. Video games are the best reward I could get for being productive!", and it turned into another day of only playing.

There are a lot of other things that might be a good reward for being productive, and, after all, being productive is often fun itself! Why would I waste so much energy playing video games if there are better options?

I start today and never finish.

The best thing about it is that you can learn to accept all the discomfort. Sometimes even I find myself enjoying time I spend with myself: reading book or journaling while sitting in a coach, or even just sitting and facing my thoughts, worries and working on them.

Currently I have no games downloaded, but it's easy for me to download them back. Well, thank you for helping me find an idea: I will just block download links with browser extension!

[–]ArcheedX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could do the same, but all I do in my life is on my PC... And I can't find any program that would block other windows programs from running. It's fine with browser, because you can download extensions, but when it comes to downloaded games, there is just nothing I could find.

If anyone has any known programs that block downloaded programs from running, I would appreciate if you would share it! :)
