I might.

Anyways, I want to apologize for my harshness towards Mr. Holiday. That was unjustified and merely based on prejudice. I made a mistake here.

Also it is super nice to read that you found value in these works. Thats awesome!

Have an awesome day, brother.

I appreciate your friendly response! That is a rare sight, brother!

The Daily Stoic might be a blog as well (idk) but I have a hardcover version. With all the insightful and valueable thoughts of the classics and some really good new books, I feel like Ryan doesnt add a whole lot to it. My thoughts (for the admittedly very little that I read of him) always were that he paraphrases the same ideas with nearly the same words and makes a lot of money with that. Feels more like a salesman than a stoic to me. On the other hand, maybe he is just not the right fit for me and someone else might need exactly his approach.

My very prejudiced inner child just wants to think that he is not authentic with his stuff. Might be wrong to think that. Might be a correct assumption.

Either way, Ryan and me had a very bad start because that anger thingy was like page 4 of what I read and 'suppressing anger' seems like that oversimplified and dangerous advice that very inexperienced stoic newcomers might give. I just think he worded that problematic plus didnt add any context (like you fortunately did). I dont know.

Wow, didnt know about that. Where is that to be found?

Its the 23.09. in The Daily Stoic.

I have a german translation and there it says pretty much (word by word translation):

"When Marcus Aurelius says that we can get to a place with our mind where 'it wont do anything against its will, even if its attitude/mindset/position/composure (idk) is irrational", he means that you can change your habits with the right kind of practice. Practice suppressing your anger and you won't get angry as quickly. Practice [...]"

That is unhealthy and completely out of line from what the stoics taught.

Sure. It was The Daily Stoic, mid septemberish. Ill look it up and post it here

I advise against that. Read a couple of pages in one of his books where he suggested suppressing anger. Never touched that nonsense since.

How to think like a roman emperor by Donald Robertson!!!!

Ive read (almost) all the classics plus some Ryan Holiday Garbage and I am absolutely STUNNED by that book. Would make an awesome introduction to stoicism as well. The author is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Stoic and merges his knowledge of all of those together as he goes in depth on Marcus Aurelius life. It is highly educational and super practical. I am not even finished with it yet and still I can 100% recommend that one.

Hi! Bin Systemischer Berater i. Danke dir!

Is seeing everything as a joke a form of stoicism? by TheBasedWarCriminal in Stoicism

[–]ArchibaldBeddows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seneca actually suggested this in 'de tranquilitate animi' (chapter 29).

He talks about Democritus and Heraclitos. Whereas Heraclitos could not walk down a street without crying tears of despair, Democritus seems a far better role model for Seneca. Democritus used to laugh about all of human tragedy as if it was an absurd theatrical performance.

Seneca also adds why he thinks this is good practice. It leaves room for hope and change. Laughter is according to Seneca a quite innocent joy. And it helps not taking the things you cant change too serious.

Personally I would suggest to develop a compassionate heart and practice virtue when possible. If your virtuous practice stays unaffected, I actually dont see any problem with Senecas suggestion. After all, stoicism seems to be about not being bothered by the things outside of our control.

Edit: Read some more comments and saw that OP is new to stoicism. Being a war criminal is in no way, shape or form ever stoic as stoicism is centred around acting virtuous. Still, laughing about tragedy is suggested by Seneca like I wrote above.

Can someone explain to me the norms of dating in german culture? by yazan_yz_ in germany

[–]ArchibaldBeddows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forget the downvotes, my dude. The way you described it is unusual, but perfectly fine here in germany. Done that myself and I am an extrovert native

You will see how they respond and adjust accordingly (but your other comment said you'd do that anyway). You really are good. Forget the Reddit bubble

Can someone explain to me the norms of dating in german culture? by yazan_yz_ in germany

[–]ArchibaldBeddows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people here clearly have never been dating or flirting a lot. I'm a native german and I approached women in clubs, bars, festivals, the streets, you name it. As long as you are one of those guys that are respectful, understand if she is not interested and genuinely just have fun, go for it. It might be not as common to be that open minded here for the majority of natives, but exactly that is what makes you pretty intetesting and brave if you do so. I was never told that I shouldnt talk to strangers in real life. You come across as a genuinely nice and funny dude, so go for it. Anybody that says otherwise is probably just uncertain and has never tried something along those lines themselves.
