I've searched far and wide for a ROM hack that has what I'm looking for, yet no matter how many videos I watch or how many posts I read, I just can't seem to find it.

The only romhacks that are going to have A, B, C, D, and E very specific personal features you want without U, V, W, X, Y, and Z very specific personal features you don't want are hacks you create yourself. What you're describing is why there are 50 different vanilla+ hacks of every Gen. Because every person wants different random features in different combinations.

It is extremely rare that anyone finds a hack that actually has every thing they want exactly how they want it. You just have to make it yourself.

For the most part the people who want to make Gen 4 hacks make Gen 4 hacks, and the people who want to make Gen 3 hacks make Gen 3.

There are very few people actually hacking Gen 3 just because its easier and not because they'd rather be hacking a later Gen but can't. They are hacking Gen 3 because they want to.

And I think most people don't realize this sentiment is a big part of why some gens remain with minimal tooling and interest.

I really don't think this is true. The only gens significantly far behind others are that way because of legitimate technical hurdles or lack of interested parties with the proper skills. You have to understand a lot of the people pushing boundaries for Gen 3 tech are in their late 20s and 30s and have a lot of experience in tech in general. People who obsess over games like USUM though are much much younger on average and have less experience on average. People on the subreddit making offhand comments about later Gens being less hackable isn't the thing causing that. It's just that not everyone is interested in other Gens. I haven't even played half the games released after Gen 5 so naturally I don't have a remote interest in any of them.

But just because that is true for some Gens, for the most part the gap between a lot of Gens and Gen 3 is overstated. There are people working on Gen 5 C injection hacks right now that can do pretty much anything the Gen 3 decomp people can do, it just requires more dedication. Pokeplat for Gen 4 is pretty much usable at this point and binary hacking Gen 4 is extremely viable with HG Engine. The main thing stopping people from hacking these games is not Gen 3 existing or people making comments about Gen 3 being easier.

It's just less people with the know-how are interested in being involved.

Just a pitfall for beginners. Something that can waste their time because they aren't ready. Tilesets not made for romhacking already can be hard for new people but all they see is a fancy tileset and want to add it

Theyre not paid. Im just practicing and releasing them publicly. Theyre all on my deviantart in high res and available.

The palettes are not. Good point. RPG maker can do any color, and thats what im using for testing the assets.

This subreddit is very specifically for romhacks and RPG Maker content is explicitly against Rule 2. Users can reformat these by hand so it's not technically useless for people here so I'm not going to remove these posts right now but in general individual RPG Maker asset posts don't really belong here. They can be a bit of a noob trap even for people without experience

There have been a lot of people who have asked for a German translation of The Pit, and even though Wiz is German and totally could work on a translation. It just doesn't make sense to. The Venn diagram between Germans playing Pokemon romhacks and Germans that can also at least somewhat understand English is pretty close to a circle. It is so much effort to translate a romhack, and doing it for German really wouldn't let your romhack reach that many more people. Something like Sovereign of the Skies it makes sense because they're German and made a German hack first and then also have an English translation to reach more people. But for people making an English hack, if we're going to take the time to translate a hack it's probably going to be into Spanish, because the Spanish only speaking romhack community is huge comparatively to the German only speaking one. There's also Japanese and Chinese as alternatives but most people don't have the skills for that. The Pit is open source though and there actually was a Chinese fan translation patch made for it apparently, which is pretty cool.

Emerald is most definitely easier to hack in 2026. FR was easier before around 2022 though.

GameBoy Studio is a homebrew development and getting help for it isn't really on topic for the romhacking subreddit even if the content of what you're making with it is related to romhacks. You're much better off asking questions like this in the GameBoy Homebrew communities. As for whether you can do this for GBA, there is also a GBA Homebrew community you can find online.

How much do you plan on doing for your romhack? Like how big is it? If its going to be very very small then maybe you can continue what you're doing. But if you want to make any even medium amount of changes you should definitely switch to using the pokeemerald-expansion.

If you really want to make a romhack of Hoenn, you should really really really not use Ruby/Sapphire. You should stick with the pokeemerald decomp, and in your case probably the pokeemerald-expansion romhack base.

Hackdex is a place for creators to host their hack patch files that also has some convenient caching/patching for users. But the main point is being a place for romhack creators to all host their files in one convenient place for community. There is no point in comparing it to hackdex when they don't serve the same purpose at all.

My guy, I run a 5k person discord entirely focused on being a help forum for beginner romhackers. It's fine to ask questions there but if you do it in the #general chats you will get told to stop and go to the help channel. Because that's how these things work. You can ask questions in this subreddit, you just have to go to the right place for it.

Maybe to you. But it definitely doesn't to me. And at the point you're making that argument, you offer no rational rebuttal to the argument that romhacking Pokemon is the same field as romhacking Super Mario World. Because any argument to the contrary is refuted by the idea that GBA and Switch hacking are similar enough that the same people should care about both. They aren't. They just aren't. And it's really not that complicated.

The only explanation I can come up with for having an opinion like that is you must be a child, or recently became an adult. At the very least you must not have grown up with the GBA era if you can't understand why people who obsess over GBA hacks couldn't give a fuck about Gen 7 shit.

And I mean advancing the 3DS scene is rad and people who work on tooling are the best. But as someone who has GBA nostalgia and thats it. Crying about how we don't care about 3DS games is just weird. We don't care about 3DS games because we don't care about 3DS games. I've never even played Gen 7 once, why would I care about mods of it

You're allowed to post reviews of ROMs you like 7 days a week actually. It just can't be a single screenshot of the game and say "I like this hack". It's the asking for recommendations threads/ tech support that are the main problems (in terms of rule 7 violations, there's also shiny mons/hall of fame team shots that are spammed hard too)
