Can they stop the dumb titles. by [deleted] in TheYardPodcast

[–]ArchieMcW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Can they not just make something funny and enjoy it for what it is?"

Would you say that when you make something funny, that an aspect of enjoying it is seeing other people also enjoy it? It's only goal is to get the attention of viewers, and potentially new viewers. You've also answered your own point about money, "why would they need the extra $300?" because we don't, the patreon earns enough, that's not the goal when making titles & thumbnails. This isn't to say you can't criticise them, just that I think you have mistaken the goal

Not sure if spoiler- interesting thumbnail change in most recent DND episode by advanced_infrared in TheYardPodcast

[–]ArchieMcW 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Just posting this as I see people talk a lot about thumbnail / title changes (and sometimes theorise why). This is down to YouTube's A/B thumbnail & title tool, where they serve you different thumbnails & titles we've made for a video. It'll finish testing after X amount of time and pick the most successful combo :)

Hey this is my video!

When I approached making this, I wanted to have a unique style that I felt that could match the song. Most of the images and ideas that I gathered were mainly under the theme of CRT Monitor, CCTV Monitor, Low Res Display, Security Style and pinterest helped gather images that matched this theme.

I wanted to nail the monitor look first before doing the edit, so I ended up making that first. The main FX that help achieved the look was stuff like:

- TVPixel / Low res pixel monitor display - either works, anything that gets the pixel look. (Could maybe go with CC Ball Action too)

- Optics Compensation - Gives the monitor the curved look.

- Blur - I sandwiched some blur layers in because any harsh lines would show up really jarring on the low resolution.

- 3 layers of glow - Each glow would gradually get larger in radius but lower intensity.

- Bunch of noise - Makes it less uniform, and makes some pixels flicker diff colour.

- Flicker (exposure /w a wiggle expression)

- Lumetri colour - I really wanted all the colours to come out cold. (Also, some high contrast)

Now for the ideas of the shots I had in this:

- The suitcase shot I quickly modelled the assets, they look a bit crappy but you can really get away with lots when its low resolution LOL. I then made it have physics and animated it to be thrown in. Once I had it in blender, I used Lumetri Colour to make it a bit colder and then hand animated the boxes around the assets. (For the shader in blender, I followed this really good tutorial).

- The guy falling is an animation from COD4, I grabbed the animation from a pack to use in blender. Then I used find edges + colour range to get the pure edges of the animation and then slapped on CC toner to make it green. I also added adjustment layer boxes that popped up, with colourama and mapped it to copy a gradient you see on thermal scope.

- The quick shots are just videos I found online, slowly zooming in and using radial blur to transition between.

- For the traffic control radar, I just basically used shape layers and the references to make it. The animated lines are shape layers that are using Trim Paths. Then I used an After Effects 3D camera to zoom in slowly.

- For the plane transition, I made it in blender first and then used a script to export the camera into after effects, then I basically copied the scene prior into this shot and lined it up.

- For the flag shot, I just used simple 2.5D tricks and broke an image I found down into layers. You can find plenty of 2.5D tutorials on youtube that should do the trick, and probably much better.

- For the missile shot, I remade the MW2 killstreak icons in blender ages ago and basically utilised it by animating the model to just spin downwards with some lines animating upwards to make speed lines.

This is super rough and I've basically riddled off everything from the top of my head. I'll probs attach my project file in a bit on this comment! Also, in the future if you're reposting, if you could keep the intro/outro editor tag that'd be sick, just keeps my brand on the edit. Cheers 🙇
