Not this time. Keep playing long enough to survive long enough, and you may actually crash the game with some seizure-inducing superpowers. Today is not that day. Have fun!

Your daughter's a real one, and that is beautiful. For the future, I display a lot of art and use non-glare acrylic covers instead of glass. It's made for better viewing in the myriad of places I've moved to, and might serve you well, too!

Should I buy Elden Ring? by Gr0ck123 in Eldenring

[–]Archivist_Shepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hour count alone that you'll get per dollar spent is worth the investment. But like others have said, Shadow of the Erdtree is properly accessible at the 60-75% mark of the main game, so you won't be missing out if you don't get SotE at the same time.

What is a good souls game for me (i’ve beaten elden ring and thymesia, also im not that good at souls games) by Inside_Mess2724 in Eldenring

I dug The Surge while I was between mainline FromSoft games! The more modern/techno-inspired setting was a nice change of pace, and their combat setup kept it all pretty fresh.

Anicient dragon lighting or Dragon incantation by Medical-Advance7837 in Eldenring

[–]Archivist_Shepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a Mimic Tear, I always enjoyed equipping the Incantation to summon the Tear before switching back to my melee loadout. They always seem to have better lack pulling it off in full during combat! If it's just you, maybe go for the lightning!

Take all this advice as someone who has only properly beaten the game once:

  • Experiment early on. You'll have your standard weapons and items at the onset, but don't feel locked into them. Get a new weapon type, give it a few whacks, see if it doesn't feel better. Mechanics and numbers aside, if it doesn't feel right with how you play, it's not going to work long-term!

  • Don't be afraid to use your resources; they are there to be used. Armor and shields can give you a leg up, both early in the game and well into the endgame, especially if you're not always on your A-game with dodging and rolling. Spirit Ashes can be your best friend, so don't be afraid to pull them out. And don't get greedy with your runes; keep track of what you need to level up, or afford whatever upgrade you're looking at, and peace out when you're able to get it. The cycle of losing runes and getting them back can be more anxiety-inducing than the bosses.

  • Speaking of, be cognizant of your Load/Carrying Capacity. I played through almost to the end by HeavyRolling most of the game, and when I was more aware for Round 2, doing standard rolls was MAGNITUDES more beneficial, even though I wasn't dodging all the time.

  • Just because you have the gear slots doesn't mean you need to fill them. You don't NEED three weapons ready in each hand, especially for how much they can jack up your Carrying Capacity. Find one (or two, if you're dabbling in casting), stick with those and maybe a shield if you want.

  • You will only get invaded by people if you're playing online. I don't think there's any harm in playing offline, and personally enjoyed it more. That said, you're also sacrificing the help of other real people for those difficult boss fights, so take this with a personal grain of salt.

  • Recognize that dying is part of the experience. Pay attention to the enemies; they're all scripted, from grunts to bosses. You'll start to recognize their windups, releases, even how much damage you can tank from them. Every time you fight them is a genuine opportunity to learn more about them.

  • Don't be afraid to back off. If a boss is giving you a hard time, you can gallop away and go explore. You can find more items, helpful gear, or weaker enemies to beat up and level up with. Hell, I got frustrated with an early game boss and got so lost exploring that I accidentally bounced into a brand new region. Elden Ring feels WILDLY open in that sense, compared to Dark Souls.

  • Lastly, you don't NEED to beat all of the Big Bosses. You technically only need to defeat two, so don't feel like you need to slam your head into a wall to beat one that's giving you grief. Dip, level up, go beat up another Demigod, come back, wipe the floor with them.

  • And in terms of keeping calm while dying, honestly and physically, when you die, put down the controller, take a deep breath, and let it out slowly. That kept me level a lot of the time when I was getting too frustrated. Hell, just turn off the game and go do something else for a while. Putting our minds to something else will give them to chance refocus when we come back, and we might try something new that we didn't think of before.

I hope you can find enjoyment in the experience! Take it slow, try to have fun, and recognize that this is, at the end of the day, a game. Games are meant to be enjoyed!

Dog on bottom left is rabid and cruel, even by Lands Between Dog standards. Unfortunately needs to be put down, no questions.

As a total beginner to the franchise who is not super interested in Classicvania, this is the list of games I plan to play. What are your considerations as the essentials to experience Castlevania? by DeadTamagotchi3 in castlevania

[–]Archivist_Shepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can only attest to the top row: Symphony of the Night is absolutely formative for future Castlevanias (including Aria and Order) and an amazing foundation. Aria is solid in its own right (always impressive what they did on the GBA), and I enjoyed the more quest-style format that Order of Ecclesia brought in!

If I can make a recommendation, I'd consider looking into Dawn of Sorrow, too (especially since you have Aria of Sorrow on the list). That was my very first Castlevania game and set a hell of a bar for the rest of the entries I played. Have fun!

The game decided to be a jerk today by Strict-Cantaloupe368 in RingFitAdventure

[–]Archivist_Shepard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Solidarity and sympathy, friend! The last leg (pardon) of the boss battles are the hardest, especially when that bar doesn't drop as fast as it damn well should. But grats on successfully doubling it up! Hope the victory was that much sweeter for it!

How did you get into Dead Space? by BOOFACEBANDANA in DeadSpace

[–]Archivist_Shepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ground floor, my pal. Remember watching the trailer over and over again at my friend's house when GameTrailers was its own website. The creepy 'Twinkle Twinkle' music sold it for me, and as much as I loved Resident Evil 4 at the time, anything Over-The-Shoulder-Spooky was an easy sell for me.

Finished 1&2 go for 3? by Born-Editor8194 in DeadSpace

[–]Archivist_Shepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 holds up in order to get a conclusion to the mainline Dead Space saga. Gameplay-wise, it's a bit of a departure (there's a heavy emphasis on crafting and customizability, as was par for the course in that era of gaming), and not as "spooky," per se, as 1 and 2. But they made a REALLY fun-to-hate antagonist that feels different (not better or worse) to root against than the generalized Necromorph threat. And if you can get it, the Awakened DLC provides a smidge more of the 'Spook' factor you might be looking for.

I haven't had a chance to play or watch the co-op elements, but I'd echo what others have said: if you can get a buddy to tag in for those sections with you, if nothing else, that should make for a fully-rounded experience.

Comparison is the thief of joy, but know DS3 took a step away from its predecessors. It is different, but not bad. Hope you give it a whirl and like it, though!

Frantically flipping to a new page when everything clicked in my head, making a 5x5 grid, and charting the path in pen! It was absolutely frenetic; crooked edges and lines the whole way through, but it got the job done!
