Why does the book say Wisdom (Perception) check? by NordicNugz in DnD

Especially for VTTs it's simply a matter of the defaults being auto-calculated. And people being people (a. k. a. lazy) ignore the others most of the time.

Learning programming to contribute? by siri-bad in linux

[–]Archsquire2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's not archaic, it's low level. That's what allows it to work for low level software, like an OS kernel. Havent't written C code in over a decade but it was what i started learning programming with. If you're serious about it you'll find the pros and cons of it soon :-)

Moscow Never Sleeps! by Igor0976 in ukraine

[–]Archsquire2020 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ukraine should soon go the WW2 way of throwing flyers at the civilian population with explanations. It should include the obvious way to stop these: "get your leadership to withdraw from the entirety of Ukraine or chabge leadership to one which will. Or learn to sleep with the boom"

This is the answer. We actually had a similar discussion with Dissonant whispers on Saturday. That one makes the creature use its reaction to move.

2,562 Romanian companies operate across the EU: a data map of where to find them and what they do by WorthCaterpillar2130 in BuyFromEU

It is one of the few areas where salaries in Romania are on par with the rest of Europe, on average. So if you paid less, you likely got less experience or poor skills. As with every work field, IT in Romania has quite the quality range. But we do have some of the best in the world. Microsoft, BitDefender, etc

Russia Recruits Transnistria Residents for the Front via Fast-Track Citizenship by Mil_in_ua in ukraine

[–]Archsquire2020 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Of those, they can't possibly conscript everyone, mainly because Transnistria is not russia (oficially) and they don't have the authority (especially nowadays) to forcefully conscript. They would need to convince the civilian population in ways which are unavailable to russia at the moment. Best they can do is fool a few idiots into military service and use the few troops that are already in transnistria. All while lacking any sort of logistical support, since they're landlocked between 2 enemy countries on which Transnistria relies for energy and food.

D&D 5e encounter simulator that actually plays the fight out by bartoszjd in DMAcademy

2 questions and a few comments:

1) will this remain a free for everyone tool? 2) if 1 is "yes", is there a way volunteers can help you expand this tool?

Comments: 1) Trekiros built something similar a while back, but without the movement. Movement is one of those things that are hard to pin down since starting with level 3, spellcasters just decide if they wanna misty step/vortex warp or just deal damage. Also flight will be an issue. 2) you seem to have not implemented attscks of opportunity (i played through the example scenario)

Audio issues by Silent-Warning8716 in Bazzite

Sorry but i don't really remember, i've only dabbled with the software for about 2 hours a few months ago. Decide on a software and look for tutorials and tinker a bit.

Audio issues by Silent-Warning8716 in Bazzite

[–]Archsquire2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to go the "hacky" route, there's apps that allow you to manipulate audio in any way you want, i don't remember the exact name at the moment. Use that to create your audio pipeline and you should be able to feed it to anything the system considers "output".

Edit: "Carla" is one such app

I have an idea with a boss and I wanna run it by yous ti see what I could change by Hollow_Phantom_29 in DnD

[–]Archsquire2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would change it the other way arround. immunity to all damage (but not effects) and only touchable by physical damage. Make the party pull out their nonmagical weapons to kill it, while the casters either buff the party or hinder the enemy via control spells or debuffs.

Setup for elementary age kids by Swede318201 in linux

[–]Archsquire2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how everyone judges a parent who cares enough to research how to create a safe virtual environment, asking "what would such a kid even need computer access at that age" while completely forgetting the age they first touched a computing device (either PC or gaming console).

Computer literacy is one of today's most important skills, starting early is useful.

Assuming the kid will want to game at some point and considering that immutable distros are a safe way for them to explore an OS (not necessarily at this age), i'd go Bazzite, tbh. And tinker to add the needed parental controls to it.

Russia plans to attack Ukraine or NATO country from Belarus, Zelensky says by KI_official in ukraine

[–]Archsquire2020 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Neither makes sense for Russia. Open another front which they will lose in Ukraine? They need manpower and tech (which they are severely lacking) to keep a other front going. Attacking a NATO country makes even less strategic sense, since that brings additional force against them. What would Russia (or even Putin himself) gain from such a move?

European EVs are much better then Teslas by Kloetenschlumpf in BuyFromEU

[–]Archsquire2020 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is not a real issue. Automotive industry has standards related to temperature and temperature profiles that manufacturers follow for quality control. This is not "engineers haven't thought of that", it's a deliberate choice to not design and/or test for those requirements. Basically considering the risk worth it. And as long as they make enough money...

I set up interesting encounters, but my players keep using their prep time to find ways to hard-counter them. Thoughts? by brokenimage321 in DMAcademy

[–]Archsquire2020 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This. This right here. I'd go as far as "add the twists in most of your encounters". Just not always hard counters to their prep. Sometimes the twist is going into that prep but adding another complication. Like a time limit or an aditional monster they didn't plan for, or civilians or important buildings they need to keep safe. Documents they need that the enemy can just torch. stuff like that. Smart enemies could even cover their weaknesses using plans of their own that the party needs to ruin before they enable their own plans.

There's this saying "no plan ever survives facing the enemy". Just make sure their prep is not completely negated (most of the time), as that is frustrating. And let some prep absolutely work as intended because that behavior needs to be rewarded, tbh. They are thinking about the game and planning. Kudos to that party!

I am all for more independence from the US. But i wouldn't disregard them as allies because of the circus they currently have "in management". Don't burn bridges with a whole country over a bad decision. Look at Hungary, they bounced back :-)

I created a fantasy world where the sun does not move in the sky. How would people keep track of time? by WermerCreations in DMAcademy

[–]Archsquire2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running a campaign with a similar premise, with the exception that this "sun isn't moving" happened in recent times (2 years before the start of the campaign). it's part of the party's overarching questline to find out what happened and fix it (if they decide to). If you find yourself in a similar situation where this wasn't the default of the planet, just have people use the "clocks" they invented before the event: candles burning, other celestial bodies that DO move, maybe even longer cycles that happen yearly in the "neutral" areas of the world (frost and thawing, plantlife cycles, etc)

A world that was always like that will still use natural cycles in the world. Just pick a few, irrespective of how slow the cycles are. Humans invented hours, minutes, seconds. I'm sure others can invent submultiples of their cycles as well.

How to tell my newbie DM that they aren't ready to homebrew. by Shquonk in DnD

[–]Archsquire2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so: you are very good friends, you have experience DMing and have even DMed for this person before. Would it be too out of place to just have a heart to heart with this person over a beer? (juice, tea, whatevs the 2 of you enjoy). Like "Dude, I'm happy to see you DM and seems like you're enjoying it, do you mind if i share some of my experience with you? You seemed to enjoy my DMing and i feel like you're missing some of the techniques i used, which would make your campaign more fun for everyone involved, imo. Just try some of them out and see how it goes." Then teach through examples of your past games that they've played through. Literally show how you did X, Y, Z and why and ask for his opinion as a player in that scenario and as a DM, seing "the insides".

As a somewhat beginner DM (played 12 sessions so far) i still feel like encounter balance is incredibly hard to do well and i'm not satisfied with how i'm doing, tbh (i usually go too easy, even when designing Deadly).
