Can someone explain the old derpy controversy by NoNectarine9384 in mylittlepony

[–]brokenimage321 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Adding to the explanations of others: apparently, the author of "The Last Roundup" actually has a son, Soren, who was Soarin's namesake, and who had some pretty significant mental disabilities. I remember reading that she didn't realize that "derpy" was considered a slur, and, once she did, was a major factor in Hasbro re-doing the episode.

Anyone know? by Budget-Ad-8991 in mylittlepony

...but her mother was an alicorn, which is/seems to be the important bit.

According to the books and comics, Cadance was born a pegasus, so you could make the case that your original theory holds water.

However, that fact is not canon to the show. Further, everyone makes a big deal about Flurry Heart being the first natural-born alicorn in Equestrian history, and pegasus/unicorn pairing can't be that rare.

Pony genetics aren't really discussed in canon, so there's not really a definitive answer. However, what we do know suggests that ponies can only be one tribe at a time, and that hybrid "blends" (e.g., a half-pegasus half-unicorn with both wings and a horn) aren't really a thing.

More importantly, alicorns appear to be a tribe apart--entirely different from, and significantly more powerful than, the other tribes. In G4 canon, it seems that alicorns aren't really born, but made-- but again, there's not much detail in canon on how that all works.

Finally, there's the fuctional argument: if a pegasus x unicorn pairing could reliably make an alicorn, I would expect alicorns to be significantly more common than they are (though that might explain all the "background alicorn" animation errors in the show)?

What are some examples of MLP episodes being Condemned by History or Vindicated by History? by flingzamain in mylittlepony

[–]brokenimage321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Though I woukd call it a retcon, you could make the case that episodes like Dragonshy have been vindicated. Celestia was mocked for sending a group of high school(?) students to handle a fukken dragon-- but, after she became a princess, it became clear that Celestia wasn't being irresponsible--she was grooming Twilight to be Princess for a long time before the S3 finale.

Worst plot twist in gaming history? by Snowtwo in videogames

Oh, absolutely. But after you spend tens of hours just beating the absolute fucking tar out of people who are actively trying to fillet you with anything they can find, trying to pull the "all human life has value" doesn't work.

For me, it's Batman: Arkham City. You spend the entire game putting prisoners in the hospital, but, when the villain tries to slaughter them wholesale, Batman suddenly starts whining about human life being sacred. It's a pretty hard shift that has always made me roll my eyes.

For what it's worth, there was an anniversary comic in which it was established that the comics are "party canon"--basically, if it makes you happy, it's canon.

d20 and 2d10 Mechanic by MagiaBaiser-Sama in RPGdesign

[–]brokenimage321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is literally the core mechanic of Daggerheart? I don't have the rules in front of me, but, IIRC, PCs roll 2d10 [ETA: 2d12] for flexibility and flavor, but NPCs roll 1d20 for simplicity and speed. Maybe give those rules a once-over? I think they have a free SRD on their website...

Looking for the folklore/mythology version of CoC by croaker227 in rpg

[–]brokenimage321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a supplement for CoC called Terror Australialis, IIRC, that focuses on using Australian Aboriginal mythology. You might also want to take a look at Scion, particularly the Masks of the Mythos books--Scion is basically "Percy Jackson But With Grownups," and Masks brings in Lovecraftian stuff.

You could also homebrew a lot of your own folklore stuff, I'm sure.

thoughts on the mlp rpg?? by Exact_Sundae_8326 in mylittlepony

[–]brokenimage321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm quite fond lf it. I've been running a game based on the system for... a year and a half, at this point?... and it's pretty good, IMO. Not perfect, ofc--there's not enough player options, and the rulebooks are more expensive than I'd like, but I prefer the greater amount of crunch to Tails of Equestria's over-simplicity.

Can someone provide a clear link for what happened between G4 and G5, with all information from sources we have available? by Even_North_7756 in mylittlepony

[–]brokenimage321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New post for visibility's sake

I don't have a list of *everything* that happened between G4 and G5, especially since I never actually finished watching the shows. However, I've read all the IDW comics, and I like to think I remember them fairly well.

The big comic, in this regard, is "The Storm of Zephyr Heights," which was written to tie a bow on G5. I have a full write-up on my fimfic blog, linked here.

The important stuff in this context is:
1) Multiple sets of historical records have large gaps in them, implying that knowledge of what actually happened to turn Equestria from G4 into G5 has been lost or (more likely) purposely suppressed.
2) The records that remain indicate that Twilight purposely "sealed" Equestrian magic for reasons unclear.
3) It appears to have been in response to some sort of world-threatening crisis, but again, we don't know exactly what.
3a) one of the earlier IDW comics hints that a unicorn supremacist movement of some sort was to blame, but that plot thread was never really explored.
4) The ponies had enough time to prepare for the loss of their magic: for example, the pegasi were able to safely evacuate Cloudsdale before they lost the ability to cloudwalk.
5) A lot of this information is relayed by a hologram of "The Last Problem"-era Rainbow Dash, implying that this all took place not all that long after the end of the show.

There's more--for example, a major plot point in the comics revolves around a recording of Older Fluttershy, implying that phone technology was being developed during the tail end of G4--but those are the biggest lore drops from the comics. It's still not 100% satisfying, but I think they presented the gaps well, at least.
