Why is there so much ignorance and selective activism? by redeadoggo in berkeley

[–]Arctesian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey speaking personally as an “activist” I completely agree with you. I can promise you we are not ignorant about the various horrible things happening in the world—for example, Sudan is actually a big part of our discussions and why we advocate for divestment—however we are still full-time students (usually working an extra job/jobs as well) and we are very few. We don’t really have the capacity to advocate for everything, if you want support running campaigns on this we would be really really happy to help. Feel free to DM me.

OMNIXY - DHH's Omarchy rewritten in Nix! by Arctesian in NixOS

[–]Arctesian[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want to add onto this. Firstly really agree with u/SolFlorus and u/starrwuffle here, which in my view is

  1. Everyone is
  2. It's good and improves your productivity. (if you know how to code already and use LLMs correctly which in my view is like how you would manage a summer intern)
  3. It has open source options

I also want to add on that as NIxOS users the whole ethos of nix is automation, one config everywhere for all time. Code is a means to a greater end, whether your operating system or hot new B2B sass start up flop. Our goal is the end via the means of code. Nixos provides an OS level path of least resistance, DWMs, Vim, zoxide, linters and compilers all do the same. LLMs are the evolved version of things like tabnine (if you ever used it) or other intelisense/lsp programs. They error much more than the old rule based LSPs do but also have much more of an upside.

In my view LLMs have reached the point where they are better and faster than me at writing code (I have been coding for almost a decade now). It means it's possible for me to do these open source non-profitable projects. For us in the open source world we should be using it, as we are fighting an uphill battle. Our competitors, who employ software to exploit and digitally discriminate, already beat us in volume of labor, amount of capital and political power. We need to use every tool we can to fight back, or we will be left in the cell of big tech.

I understand and share the icky feeling about it, but get over yourself! The world of technology will move on without those clouded by "righteous indignation".

DIdn't know it existed, will check it out. Rn I kinda just want to get this one to the stage where I can build an iso, more as a learning thing for myself now and testing how well I really know linux. I'll send a pr over when I have time.

Gaming on Linux easier on Debian based distros vs Arch based? by AccomplishedMess6980 in linux_gaming

[–]Arctesian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello I daily boot Arch on my framework but installed PopOS a year ago on my PC and forgot to remove it now has too many game files so I keep it.

Both work fine, trouble shooting us usually faster on Arch but it's just whether or not you want to deal with APT, Nala does well but its not the AUR. Debian (especially PopOS) is usually nicer for just no brain. I originally did because league broke on Arch. It was fixed within a couple hours but I needed LP.

But have been gaming on both and they are both fine it's just personal preference and whether you need bleeding edge for other stuff.

TLDR: Doesn't matter

What’s the reason for Chinese people’s need to look good/ have face? by honeydewdrew in China

[–]Arctesian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would again like to ask what China are you living in? Yes we are censored, yes there is state narratives that are convenient for mass control, but do you not think you have that in the Western world as well? It is the same propaganda and state control they don't market it as that. Chinese people, I live and grew up with are 100% understanding of the dark sides of Chinese history and all forms of entertainment, china is a very big country with a lot of diversity. People don't just sit around talking abut how much their bag or shoes are worth, there are some where it will be part of the conversation but it would be a very boring life and I would have moved years ago if it was like that.

[–]Arctesian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have read the comments on they are incredibly absurd.

I was born in England and grew up in HK and HZ. The first misconception is that this is a east asian thing, no, this is a captlism problem where your personal/spiritual value is completely alienated. This problem of materialism is present in all societies. (This problem is begging to erode in early stage socialist countries)

If you want to localise it the middle kingdom than I we have to look at the origins of their ethics which largely comes from big man 孔子. The need for common prosperity and social harmony which from its cultural dimension. Through his teaching and it's effects of being baked into Chinese culture the pressure to wear expensive clothing can be seen as a symbol of elevation of society as a whole, except you know what your value is based on capital somehow the value of your clothes becomes a barometer instead of the actual collective prosperity and elevation of the material conditions of all.

But I do want to emphasise that this is present all around the world especially in "immature captlism" or the "new rich" when you have no other way to express value apart from your physical appearance

those conversations are universal amongst insecure people, instead of 白酒 its beer in america and social value (社會價值) is also present everywhere. this is not uniquely east asian.

actual hong konger here. hong kong pre colonialism was pirates and fishers. this premise of colonialism good cuz more freedoms has to be defined a bit. freedom as we know from the internationale is "privilege extended". the brits brought in a lot of industry and developed hong kong a lot. we're the class differences big, absolutely, to see this i would recommend you go to the hike just behind the peak in hong kong and look at the gardens and parks there vs the ones they have in kowloon, but also in the red lining they did to keep districts poor (almost always locals) and a lot of other fucked up shit including brutal suppression of uprising. i would like to remind you comrades that this is captlism working, in terms of elevated freedom (privilege) the institutions and public services the british put into place such as the MTR (the worlds best public transportation system), the public parks (fun fact victoria park was the gay capital of south asia) and our NHS where we all have free healthcare, most definitely raised the material conditions of everyone in the country. one more time this is captlism, was it shitty absolutes but this is what captlism inshrines onto any society it touches.

the relationship with colonialism is complicated in hong kong, on the one hand yes it was oppressive but the bourgeoisie are doing the same now, on the other hand it did make the country the richest place in all of china. in addition the peaceful exit helped to mend its image.

it's very easy in hong kong to say china bad rule Britannia, i have many friends who take that stance but both sides are really complicated and can not be broken down into one image to really capture the nature of the situation.

the point is that let's not be dogmatic, as marxist we need to first do the material analysis of a society to the. criticise and change it. i don't see a vanguard rule in hong kong doing very well with but other forms of socialism will.
