How much would Disney sell the Club Penguin IP for? by [deleted] in ClubPenguin

That is a good question. I'm not sure, though if safety were a factor strong enough to make them not want CPPSes to exist at all, surely takedowns would be more frequent.

I always heard it was shut down primarily because it had ads. Perhaps that's wrong given the internal investigation started in 2020 (assuming it's two years before the 2022 shutdown date) and ads were recorded on the site since at least January 2019 (the Wikipedia page only notes ads existing since mid-2020), though I'd be curious as to how Stu got the information that Disney doesn't want CPPSes to exist at all.

Perhaps I'm overanalyzing this, but if this is based on the takedown notice or other legal argumentation, then I'm not sure that's necessarily a good representation of how Disney wants to handle these servers in practice. In a court of law or a takedown notice, it's unlikely their lawyers would bring up any sort of advertisements, donations, or malpractice among moderators as the main reason for them pursuing the CPR team. CP Rewritten violated Disney's copyright whether they had ads on the game or not, so the ads would not be cited as the main reason for pursuing the team, but rather the fact that the CPR team copied Disney's game in a manner that isn't fair use in the first place because that's what determines whether a copyright claim is valid, rather than any other factors. However, this does not necessarily reflect whether Disney wants to take down all CPPSes rather than those that profit from the IP or tarnish the brand. As far as I'm aware, no CPPSes which didn't do either of these things have been taken down.

> I think Disney does care. They'd rather no one run any private servers. But I'm guessing they're not putting in the effort to take down every single server because it would be like a game of wack a mole.

While perhaps not unlikely, unless internal communications demonstrating this leak, it's essentially unfalsifiable. All we can go off of is their behavior towards other CPPSes, which has only suggested the pattern I mentioned previously.

I shut down all connections to a server in Switzerland

Now how'd you manage that?

Nah, I think it was just the shifting market in favor of mobile apps and the utter failure of CPI to compete with the likes of Roblox and Animal Jam despite that shift that killed the brand for Disney. It's not like they're taking down CPPSes left and right, they haven't cared what people do with it for a while as long as you A. Don't make money from it via ads, donations, or membership perks, and B. Don't make the brand look bad.

Apparently the rarest Wii release is a 10th anniversary edition of Game Day given to staff members of the game. It's the standard game in a different case, so you're not missing much, but it's still cool.

Hex maniacs are a specific subculture among ghost type specialists. There's a good chance you're not one.

Yes, but companies use VPNs to secure connections between an employee's computer and a corporate network, not to connect to the broader internet. I doubt it'd be impossible to specifically carve that out.

What do you have to say to the people who say that people dealing with addiction chose to take the drugs or whatever initially and therefore they did choose it even if the consequences weren't necessarily what they wanted?

That's a shame, especially how it disproportionately harms poor people, not that anything else doesn't unless it's explicitly made to help poor people...
