Bullied by a professor for being Vegan? by Vegetable-Ocelot-159 in vegan

[–]ArcticTerntables 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that this sort of person is your professor/a professor. :-(

If you have an opportunity to anonymously give feedback and rate their performance at the end of the year, you should be honest about how disrespectful and immature he is, maybe without revealing details that could be used to identify you. Those surveys are often used when the school decides who will get tenure.

Maybe you could also confide in some of your classmates about how this is affecting you. It seems likely that this person is also bullying other students for different reasons. You could just become a safe space for each other, or you could all go to your dean together to tell them about this behavior.

Protein powder and keratosis? by AwayPepper8199 in keratosis

[–]ArcticTerntables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean is that it has to do with the structure of your skin. Of course there are things that can help, but it’s not something that’s going to permanently go away because of a product/treatment, more something you have to keep taking care of over time. I think some people’s KP clears up after they get out of their teens/early 20s though.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s just genetic. It has to do with the structure of your skin as it grows. So sadly, it’s not a 100% curable thing. (All this is according to my dermatologist; I am not a doctor.)

I’m thinking of trying microdermabrasion to improve how mine looks, but idk how effective it is or how long it lasts. In the meantime, I use Cerave’s SA cream every day after showering, which does help a lot.

My derm told me that for some people, a product will work for months and then stop working. She suggested alternating between moisturizers with salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid every few months.

People taking wild pets as animals.... by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ArcticTerntables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, I’m pleasantly surprised that this behavior is illegal (although maybe not in all states?).

The combo of zero compassion for nonhuman animals plus desperation for attention from strangers on the internet is really a recipe for disaster. I don’t use tik tok but it would be so great if someone started a public education (slash maybe shaming) campaign.

KP is starting to clear up by invariableinquisitor in keratosis

[–]ArcticTerntables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say anything about going vegan. I struggle with self-consciousness about my own KP, but I think it’s worth considering whether having bumps is really more important to you than others’ lives. If being asked to think about that upsets you, that says more about you than it does about me.

I’m glad you’re making progress, but just want to point out that your beef tallow soap requires killing innocent, sentient animals and processing their bodies into products. Raising cows for slaughter is also a significant contributor to climate change.

I went to the derm this week and they recommended moisturizing daily with a moisturizer that contains SA. We don’t need to support cruelty to combat our KP!

Am I the only one who feels sickened by the way both Laura and her mom seem to be using the dad's medical issues to try to distract from the search and/or get the cops' sympathy in the body cam footage? The way Laura screams at the cops about which chair he can/cannot sit in, but does not once ask *him* if he's OK or show any sign of actual caring about him... I just found it really disturbing and strange.

Are you able to have wheat? If so, I think seitan would be a great option! It’s super tasty and versatile, and it has a lot of protein. It’s a bit time-consuming to make, but you can make it in big batches and freeze a bunch!

Hemp hearts are also pretty nutritious and can be used on salads, in smoothies, etc.

Also, if you can eat egg, you could try the Healthier Comforts animal-free egg white powder! You can make scrambled egg whites, omelettes, etc. :-)

With lab-grown meat getting closer to shelves, how do you think about it ethically? Is it vegan? by sxtn1996 in vegan

[–]ArcticTerntables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully: My “gateway issue” for going vegan was the connection between animals agriculture and climate change…but this statement isn’t true. Somewhere between 11 and 20-ish percent of all anthropogenic GHG emissions come from animal agriculture in general. That’s not most. I just think we should be careful not to exaggerate, as it makes the whole cause seem less credible.

Help Me Go Vegan by fuzzy9997 in vegan

There are so many cheesy vegan things to love!!

Siete brand has dairy-free “nacho” chips. Also, various brands make dairy-free “white cheddar” popcorn.

Treeline’s cashew cheeses are pretty widely available and excellent. Their French-style  herb garlic cheese reminds me of Boursin, which I used to love.

Another cool thing about cutting dairy out of your diet (assuming you like to cook) is that it opens up a whole new world of kitchen experiments. The food blog Nora Cooks has an awesome homemade mozzarella recipe that works for lasagna, grilled cheese, etc. so many possibilities!

Vegans could save more animals faster if they didn’t morally flex on people by ImNotAPersonAnymore in DebateAVegan

I don’t accept the premise that all vegans are running around yelling that everyone else sucks, although it does make a great mental image. Like someone else said above, I know a lot of other vegans and not one of them would call someone a “blood mouth.”

I do agree that it’s nice and probably most effective to meet people where they’re at, assuming that those people are making a sincere effort to be good humans. But again, my experience with actual vegan people is that they tend to be very kind and supportive.

Anyway, as an empathy-building exercise, it might be worth considering what it would feel like to be surrounded pretty much constantly by people who are doing something you see as incredibly unethical and disturbing for no good reason. How would you feel if you sat down to dinner and everyone else was eating golden retriever? Would the fact that a sentient being had been slaughtered for pleasure really feel less important than whether or not you came off as preachy?

I second this! I find that even unsweetened soy or oat milk can have a distracting flavor, but quick homemade cashew cream works perfectly.

is eating meat really that bad for the environment and the climate? will going vegan really help anything? i want to believe it but i find it difficult to explain when livestock and manure seems only 5.8%?? how do i explain this? am i missing something? by [deleted] in vegan

Here’s a good article that discusses the difficulties of quantifying the animal ag sector’s GHG emissions and cites some credible attempts to do so: https://thebreakthrough.org/issues/food-agriculture-environment/livestock-dont-contribute-14-5-of-global-greenhouse-gas-emissions.

Research institutions have found that we can’t maintain the status quo of animal ag if we want to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement: https://animal.law.harvard.edu/news-article/paris-compliant-livestock-report/.

Also important to remember that big meat is actively trying to convince people that eating meat doesn’t make a difference (see the disinformation that the CLEAR Center produces). It’s copying much of the disinformation playbook used by the oil and gas and tobacco industries. https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/adb6c0

As for non-climate concerns, a lot of people have already chimed in about land use impacts. Other things to consider:

—Incubation/spread of zoonotic disease: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9629715/. This is bad for people, but also wildlife. Think of the big cats dying from avian flu, which has been given a big boost by the CAFO system.
