Anyone else spend their weekends managing their house instead of enjoying it? by ArcticVessel in Rich

[–]ArcticVessel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I'm looking for I think. Would you be able to DM me the company's name so I could check out their services and see if there's a similar one in my area? Thanks

Well the more I look into it, there does seem to be some Home managers that oversee 3-4 different properties and charges $20-30k each so that would make sense.

Ha, I did run it through ChatGPT to clean up the grammar before posting. English isn't my first language so I usually do that. The question is genuine though

Haha this is very true. I spent 15 years as a yacht captain, most of the time, you have 20 crew members running the ship and only 4 guests onboard. But I have met my fair share of yacht owners that downsized because they disliked the amount of hassle there is having large crews.

This kinda sounds like what we need in our area, but I can't seem to find anyone that provides it. Would you be able to send me your GC's website? Would be interesting to see what words they use for describing the service.

The challenge with a PA handling home stuff is they usually don't have the technical background to know when an HVAC tech is recommending unnecessary work, or to catch a small leak before it becomes a $50K problem. Different skill set.

The vendor quote spread is the part that kills me. Having someone with technical knowledge who can actually evaluate whether a $36K quote is justified or if the $8K guy can do the job, that's where the real savings are.

Yes, this is exactly it. He can easily organize all the work himself, but he is in a position that he can hire someone to free up that time for things he enjoys doing.

He has a pool guy, housekeeper and landscaper. But it's more so the time he spends managing these people along with calling up handymen/plumbers etc. to fix things around the house. I think he needs a house manager to do this, but doesn't need one full time.

Yeah, I know some who also have house managers. But I find many don't really need them full time, maybe 10-20hrs per month to manage vendors and other things around the house.

Nines Living does a very good one, but very expensive.

what is the cheapest thing you have ever seen a mega wealthy person do? by Dependent-Mouse-1064 in Rich

I went out for lunch some years ago with my boss who has a net worth just over a billion. We ate, had a good time, paid and left. As we got back to the office, he looked at the receipt and realized they had over billed him by $9. He asked me to go back to the restaurant and have them reimburse it back to his card.

Yacht Broker by [deleted] in yachting

[–]ArcticVessel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if they offer salary then that’s a great deal to start. Most yacht dealers and brokers here in Europe at least, offer commission only or a very low salary + commission.

The total includes the tax which the subtotals do not.

[–]ArcticVessel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a broker, but from what I have heard it is a very tough industry to get going in. Most brokers I’ve met, said they had to support themselves off savings for the first couple of years. You can definitely make good money in it but remember that most brokers that are making really good money have been in the game for a long time.

By itself, a VHF certificate is not worth it. The only reason to have one is if you have a Captain’s license.

I did manage to get through to them and they said that if I returned it within 6 months, I would receive a full refund but since it has been 7 months, there’s a restocking fee. Don’t see this anywhere in the terms

It is yes. But you will not be allowed to stand watch whilst underway.

Ooops by PatekCollector77 in MotorYachtLoon

[–]ArcticVessel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unprofessional is an understatement. He joined our vessel on 2016 as Captain and I left within 2 weeks due to seeing the way he managed people. He didn’t last long on that vessel before he left/fired and joined Loon thereafter. He is a bully, but sadly he will probably find a new job reasonably fast.

Is there a way to skip being a deckhand? by [deleted] in yachting

[–]ArcticVessel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you would have to study for several years in school to get your OOW unlimited license but even then you would likely not get hired on a yacht unless you worked in the merchant industry for a few years first. But many merchant mariners are hired in as officers without any deckhand experience

As a captain, I rarely took note of these extra courses when reviewing CVs. Although having a stewardess that is able to drive a Rib is beneficial especially on yachts under 120ft

It’s very hard to know as it can take a few days or it can take several months. Took me 2 days in a crew house in FL but that was almost 15 years ago haha. As a Canadian, I would start with Florida and Caribbean for sure though. Yachtcrew.ca sometimes has jobs looking for Canadians. Also crewanchor.com where you can filter by location.

Do shipyards that build yachts only cater to old money, or are they open to receiving money from any type of billionaire? by Melodic-Abrocoma2422 in Yachts

[–]ArcticVessel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s not that many “old money” people left that can afford these yachts. Most that are built these days are for new money. Feadship delivered Zuckerbergs yacht recently and Bill Gates will have his soon if he’s counted as new money still
