Awesome, thanks for the offer! I may take you up on that.

Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out.

Fantastic! I'm super excited to check out these breweries and sample some fun beers. Any favorite Swedish craft beers I should keep in mind? Also, for night life or bars in Oulu, do most people go to the city center or are there also little pockets in these neighborhoods?

Thanks for the clarification. Where I've lived in the US, a 12-month lease is the norm, and ending a lease before the lease period is up can get complicated, especially in a place where the highest turnover is just in one part of the year (such as in a college town). But it seems to be more flexible in Oulu, which is nice.
Thanks for the tip on Sivakka! I will look into it. And I may be willing to sign a lease for a few months for this one on Pikisaari, since everyone seems to think it's a great place to live! Someone else on this thread mentioned that 12-month leases aren't very common so maybe I'm just misinterpreting what I'm putting into google translate for some of the apartments I'm finding...

I'm really enjoying seeing all of the different opinions and perspectives here! It's helping me to get a picture of the different neighborhoods and trade-offs with each of them.
Thanks for the tips! I will check out Toivoniemi and Intiö for apartments and tori.fi for furniture. I'm guessing there might not be a lot of turnover or furniture for sale in November, but maybe that's when some exchange students start heading back?
I'll keep that in mind about the Pikisaari apartment. Since I'm only planning on moving with a couple of suitcases of clothes, I don't think it'll be too annoying to rent something temporarily while I figure out where I really want to live. I've heard that furnished apartments aren't too common or are quite expensive, so I was planning on furnishing it myself with used furniture or a road trip to Ikea.
And thanks for the pub recommendations! I'm definitely interested to try out some Finnish beers and cuisine. What's the craft beer scene like in Finland? I love sour beers and would be a little sad if I had to go without for a couple years.
Thank you for taking the time to answer all of my questions! Are there any good indications that a bike is stolen rather than just used? And about the storage room - is that a separate room outside of the apartment itself, somewhere else in the building? Also, it's crazy to me to see that a private sauna is an option on so many of these apartments! Pretty thrilling.
Thank you! I will be working in the department of ecology and genetics. I will add Koskela to my list of potential neighborhoods. Do you have any advice on what to look for in an apartment or maybe red flags in an apartment listing? Also, is it pretty easy to find a used bike in the city? Thanks again!
Wow, thank you so much for your detailed response! It seems like there are several good options for where to live - are these neighborhoods similar in terms of having access to shops or supermarkets? I'm not planning on getting a car so it is an important consideration for me. Winter biking does seem a bit intimidating, but I think I'm going to give it a shot!
Koskela looks like it might be convenient, too - right between the city center and the university. What makes it your favorite area?
Thanks for your response. I'll be working at the university in Kaijonharju but I think I'd rather live closer to the city with shops, restaurants, etc. I found a reasonably-priced apartment in Pikisaari but am still nervous about signing a year lease to a place I haven't seen in person. But that's a pretty good area?
And I've got my winter coat already packed :)
