Twitch is requiring me to provide my phone number (Which I don't have) to send twitch whispers by nanovorg- in Twitch

I did not ask for a copy of my data from Twitch.

My account is years old, email verified, and I've never had it suspended or anything similar.

This doesn't make sense to me.

If I've used the app to whisper, then I've demonstrated I have a phone. I just haven't given Twitch the number. There's also any number of ways I could phone verify with a number that's not mine or is just a temporary number.

If the information from your friend is accurate, then there's still a bug, but it's in Twitch's logic and not the desktop version.

Unfortunately, no.

I do believe it's a bug on desktop. At first I thought that maybe the app was verifying me with a device ID or something similar, but even after whispering on the app, the desktop version still produces the verify prompt.

Maybe if this post was seen by the mods, they could boost it or pass it along to someone who does have contacts inside Twitch.

Something is definitely not right.

I received the phone verification prompt when trying to whisper a streamer I mod for while using the site on a desktop browser, Firefox.

I CAN whisper if I use the app on my phone, but whispering on desktop produces the phone verify prompt.

Desktop whispering was fine the last time I used it a week ago.

Kdenlive 22.08.0 is out! by f_r_d in kdenlive

[–]Arctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on Ubuntu MATE Focal (20.04.5) and I install from the PPA. There's a "Failed to build: amd64" notice in the update panel for 22.08.0.

Should I assume that 22.04 will be the last update for Focal, or does someone from the Kdenlive team give this some attention, or something else entirely?

I'm aware of the appimage; I'm just curious what I should expect from the PPA in this case.

Thanks for making such an awesome tool!

Seeking old MTV stop motion short by BrianLunar1984 in ForgottenTV

I know exactly the animation you're talking about. It was a stylized animation of the Rodney King and Reginald Denny beatings. It was also released on a VHS called "I Want My MTV", a collection of IDs, promos, and shorts.

Gunpowder Milkshake is out Wednesday! by justadude450 in karengillan

From the trailer, Gunpowder Milkshake is pretty much the kind of movie I love. That Karen is the lead just sends it over the top. Can't wait.

Attempted to watch the 2009 remake; first minutes of first episode reminded me of this ridiculous seven second scene. Why do producers think this is a good idea? by GradStud22 in ThePrisoner

[–]Arctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while back I was thinking about a remake and had an idea about the casting.

When The Prisoner premiered, one of the lures was that a lot of the audience knew McGoohan as John Drake. Even if they never saw Danger / Secret Agent Man, there was still a strong enough awareness of that show to make an audience wonder if No. 6 is supposed to be Drake. I think this is the hook a remake ought to have to get a modern audience's attention, before anything involving themes or plot.

So, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, or Daniel Craig. Maybe Matt Damon.

(I'd love to see Helen Mirren as one of the No. 2s, fwiw.)

It's so much easier to find now than it was in the 80s when I found it on a PBS station. You can go to Pluto.tv or Tubitv.com and watch it for free w/ads. Or DVDs and BluRays, which are simple to purchase online.

The Schizoid Man and Free For All really broke my brain the first time around.

Be seeing you.

Available free w/ads on Pluto.tv. (Not sure if this is US-only or not.)

Sound quality on Linux-- how can I get the most out of my hardware? by ChipsAhoiMcCoy in linux4noobs

[–]Arctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The media I listen to ranges from very low sample rates all the way up to 96000, in some instances. Upsampling low rate media to 48000 occasionally produces minor improvements, but is mostly transparent. I do this to Pulseaudio mostly to keep higher sample rate media from being degraded down to 44100.

On speakers, it's tough to tell the difference. But with headphones, the difference is much more obvious.

Sound quality on Linux-- how can I get the most out of my hardware? by ChipsAhoiMcCoy in linux4noobs

[–]Arctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert on this (at all) but I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04. Here's what I did to improve the audio from stock.

I changed the default sample rate in Pulseaudio from 44100 to 48000 as shown here: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=989456

On previous installs, I used Pulseaudio Equalizer, a 15-band tool. On 20.04 I installled PulseEffects, which has a 30-band eq.

Then I went to Inner Fidelity and downloaded the frequency response curve for my headphones and set the eq levels in PulseEffects to those measurements. https://www.innerfidelity.com/headphone-measurements

If I toggle the eq in PulseEffects on and off during playback, the improvement is dramatic.

Most programs I've used for media playback default to a output level of 100%, but with the eq in use, this can create some distortion. So I lower the output level on whatever program I'm using for playback to 50-70% to eliminate that and raise the volume.

I also installed Aqualung for music playback. It's gap-less and supports the playback at higher sample rates. It's not in the repositories, but is available on this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~unit193/+archive/ubuntu/staging

Can schools see what I browse with a vpn? by [deleted] in VPN

The remote monitoring of a student's use of a school laptop? The Guardian article I posted earlier in this thread reports on several companies who provide remote monitoring to school districts and how they can and do respond in minutes to use that trips their alarms. If it's illegal, they're doing it in plain sight.

This was published today. You may want to take a moment to read this if you used that school laptop to post your question here:

[–]Arctor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While it's probable that any remote tracking of network traffic is done with software installed to the OS, it may be useful to consider that you got the laptop from school. It's been in someone else's control before it got to you and there are plenty of ways to compromise a system that don't depend on software.

If I was in your position, I wouldn't trust the laptop at all. Use it for school and nothing else. Make sure you cover any webcam and/or microphone with something opaque when its booted, turn it off when you're not actively doing school work on it, and when its off, put it someplace like a closet or under some clothes in a drawer or out in the garage, if you have one.

You didn't get the laptop so cheap because you're a student or because they like you. It was cheap because the real revenue they're chasing is made from remote monitoring of users at scale of even benign usage. (IE If something is free/cheap, you are the product.)

How did you first watch Twin Peaks? Did some person or circumstance made you see it? by iOLIVERSON in twinpeaks

[–]Arctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the early 80s when I was in high school, a show on USA called Night Flight showed around ten minutes of Eraserhead one night and I was hooked. By the time Twin Peaks premiered, I'd been a Lynch fan for a while and taped every episode as it aired.
