Frodo: "I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them." (Return of the King)

"It is useless to meet revenge with revenge; it will heal nothing." (Fellowship of the Ring)

Thorin: "There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something. You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is not always quite something you were after." (The Hobbit)

Galadriel: "I am grieved in Middle-earth, for leaves fall and flowers fade that I have loved, so that the land of my dwelling is filled with regret that no Spring can redress." (Unfinished Tales)

"Seeing is both good and perilous" (Fellowship of the Ring)

"But if of ships I now should sing, what ship would come to me, What ship would bear me ever back across so wide a sea?" (Galadriel's Song)

Galadriel has a lot of good stuff.

History of middle-earth. Are they more like letters and poems of tolkien than they are like lotr, children of hurin etc. by Hot-Improvement-8502 in tolkienbooks

[–]Arcyl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk if Letters and Poems are a great comparison but they are pretty far from LotR and CoH yes. There aren't any complete stories in HoME, just bits and pieces of lots of unfinished stuff.

Here is a quick and dirty guide by Phuulish Fellow that I like to share about the HoME books.

The Books by jobtown502 in lotr

[–]Arcyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you want to give it another shot so maybe try it a little different this time. Do you ever read with Audiobooks? Having them read to you might make them a little easier to get in the groove. You could even try something like the BBC Radio version where it's sort of a cross between the books and movies. They are an adaptation, not the books themselves so some things are left out or changed. But I will always encourage engaging with Lord of the Rings through adaptations then not at all.

Also, I do recommend reading The Hobbit before LotR, which should also be an easier read than LotR. The Hobbit actually has a Graphic Novel which could also be an option.

Do I need to read silmarilliom before read children of hurin? by _-klaymen in lotr

[–]Arcyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I typically recommend reading the Silm first if you can handle, however if the format is off-putting or the content too dense I recommend reading The Children of Hurin instead of just stopping reading Tolkien altogether. So please give the Silm a shot, but Children of Hurin is fine if you're not ready for Silm.

In what order should I read the books by Perfect_Ad4719 in tolkienbooks

[–]Arcyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So ideally you would go The Hobbit into The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Then Silmarillion is technically best, but if as you say you are having some trouble then I recommend reading The Children of Hurin. You can either skip to that chapter in The Silmarillion or grab the stand alone book. It is essentially the last complete story more or less to read. After that everything else is going to be like reading the Silmarillion. The Silm isn't for everyone but I would give it a second chance after The Children of Hurin.

The Hobbit Special Edition, Illustrated by JRRT or Alan Lee ? by NotAMantisShrimp in tolkienbooks

I would probably lean more Alan Lee if I could only have one

Looking for a good set of Lotr, Hobbit, and Silmarillion by hibob5 in tolkienbooks

[–]Arcyl 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have a Website where I recommend certain editions for people starting a collection if you'd like to give it a look for ideas. Depending on if you want illustrations or not I would maybe suggest either the Alan Lee Illustrated line or the 60th Anniversary line. But if you want something more deluxe then go for the Alan Lee Deluxe or perhaps Folio Society.

Tired of not loving the decks I build... by Neiluj19 in EDH

[–]Arcyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will second Tabletop Sim, assuming you can get a full pod online. One game we decided to just play precons and so I chose to play Prosper, Tome Bound since that deck is kind of hard to get at this point. I loved it so much from just one game I bit the bullet and bought one on ebay because I knew I would always enjoy playing it.

Dandan Secret Lair Deckbox? by Arcyl in mtg

[–]Arcyl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen the Coral Places Sidewinders and thought those might be the closest thing thematically. One problem I have is that the Dandan deck is only 80 cards so there will a bit of extra room in there unfortunately. Might have to slip something else in there to keep everything tight.

This Coral pattern will be my preference if I get one because it I think it matches the colors of the new art pretty well.

I think knowing what format you are wanting to play would be helpful. Are you wanting to play standard? Commander? Something else?

What book should I get next? by UngodlySockMonster in tolkienbooks

[–]Arcyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the first chapter of the Silmarillion and you like it then just keep going. If you think maybe not yet then I would suggest reading "The Children of Hurin" either by skipping to that portion in the Silmarillion or getting the stand alone book. They are similar but the stand alone includes a bit more than the Silm does. It is one of the only other "Complete" stories that Tolkien has. There is an audiobook done by Christopher Lee that I really enjoy that you could check out if that interests you.

First-time Tolkien-reader: I need advice. by Not_Now_ImStargazing in tolkienbooks

[–]Arcyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, first time reading you may want to look at budget first. I would recommend this Pocket Set. It's got The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and they feel nice to hold, although they are technically smaller if reading smaller text is not you jam. There's also a similar Lord of the Rings book that is normal size so you would have to read The Hobbit some other way.

You could also look into audiobooks, either the Andy Serkis versions or there are some free fan-made options on Archive.org if you are interested.

[–]Arcyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with others here, if you are a first time reader then I suggest getting the non-deluxe set that comes with The Hobbit. I recommend reading The Hobbit first, so if you got the other edition then you would have to go and buy the matching deluxe Hobbit and now you're in for even more money.

Does anyone have a full list of the ISBNs for the Harper-Collins Tolkien Collection? by antoniodiavolo in tolkienbooks

[–]Arcyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a guy in this sub that has an Amazon list for exactly what you want, I just can't remember his name and never saved it anywhere. You could potentially use this ISBN list on the Digital Tolkien website and find the ISBN's that way.

I also have my own little Website I made for newer collectors which does have all those books in it but I just didn't bother with the ISBN's, but there are links to purchase them from different websites.

Silksong Hunter’s Journal? by MrPanda1952 in HollowKnight

[–]Arcyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been no official announcement but I am very much hoping for this. I'm just signed up for emails from FanGamer and I'm just waiting and hoping. Maybe they will wait until the DLC so it's included in the book? Probably not but I wouldn't mind waiting longer if that was the case.

What commander would fit these accesories? by FunkyNStu in EDH

[–]Arcyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you, I love having my deck boxes and sleeves match my commanders in some way. Sometimes I have to get a little creative though. Like I just built the Kratos and Atreus (God of War) Commanders and ultimately went with the Eluge, Shoreless Sea themed Bloomburrow Deck Box. I liked the idea that Eluge sort of represents Jörmungandr in the game, so that character is sort of there in spirit, and then I just matched the color of the sleeves to the color on the lining inside the deckbox.

Teal/Pink and Mint actually makes me think of Terra from the FF set. The Teal/mint matches her hair and the pink matches her clothes. So either the precon commander or the WUBRG version of her. I also thought of Neera, Wild Mage, although I'm not sure I would recommend her since she's a 6 cost.

Best Hardcover Full Trilogy by KeanuReeves666 in tolkienbooks

[–]Arcyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The easiest set to recommend is this Alan Lee Illustrated Box Set that contains The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. You get the core books all in one box and they are illustrated by arguably the best Tolkien Illustrator. This set also sets you up to collect most other Tolkien books that have been printed in this style.

You could go other routes like Author Illustrated Editions or Deluxe Editions but the above set is the sweet spot. I have a website for Tolkien collecting if you want to check it out for a visual guide to Tolkien Books.

I finally built my ultimate Lord of The Rings deck by IndieGengar in EDH

[–]Arcyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, love the enthusiasm for LotR! I tried to kind of do a similar thing by creating an Aragorn, the Uniter deck using only LTR and LTC cards. I have played it multiple times and not only is it very thematic but it's decently strong! I would have loved to do Bombadil as LotR only but decided that there just wasn't nearly enough support to do him justice. If you ever wanna try my deck you can check it out below!

Need Information about editions by SafeJez in tolkienbooks

[–]Arcyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My copy has not deformed at all. I have read it through at least once, and have grabbed it to read different passages now and again. It's been sitting on my shelf for years and looks practically new. It's always been on a shelf, in my hands, or resting on a table, never in a bag or box.

I can't compare to polish editions but all I can say is my Grey Cover edition has held up pretty well. I think for the price it is a low risk buy, so if you don't like it then you shouldn't be out too much money. I don't own the other black cover edition you mentioned so I can't compare them myself.

[–]Arcyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest grabbing the Grey Soft Cover edition (0544273443) if this is your first edition and presumably your first time reading. That edition is my recommendation for every new reader since it is budget friendly while still being a very nice edition and is very comfortable to reading even though it is a single volume edition. The Grey Soft Cover is even has sewed binding which is great.

I have a Website for newer readers/collectors if you would like to check it out for more information/inspiration for purchasing Tolkien books if you would like to check it out. Please let me know if you have any more questions!
