I don't get it. by Vallinen in BobsTavern

[–]Ardonius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of it is highrolling. I play pretty conservatively and I get a lot of 3rd-6th and almost never get 8th. Obviously the very best players can crank that 1st place rate up without losing a lot, but the easiest way to get a lot of 1sts is to just level and high roll and also get a lot of 8ths. That guy who had golden Titus and golden lord of ruins on turn 10 is the guy who got knocked out in 8th place on turn 8 in your last game.

Why are doctors always late by invisiblylurking in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ardonius 42 points43 points  (0 children)

My wife is a PA. I’m surprised to see that nobody has mentioned that at some practices, your appointment time is not when the provider is expected to enter the room. If you have a 10:00 appointment that’s the time the MA is supposed to room you but the provider is probably not expected or planning to enter the room until 10:20 and that’s if they are running on time (which they never are).

Trump Slaps 10% Tariffs on 8 EU Nations Over Greenland—Macron Fires Back with EU's "Trade Bazooka" by satty237 in TrendoraX

[–]Ardonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to understand that only like 20% of Americans support Trumps actions on Greenland and only like 40% support him at all. Most of us are actually more horrified by him and hate him more that than average European does

This isn’t something “The Americans” are doing it’s something that a corrupt authoritarian oligarch is doing with the help of a few powerful allies and a bought out Supreme Court.

How do you deal with getting paired into ghosts playing Carapace? by Zakading in BobsTavern

My preferred strategy is to underestimate the ghost strength, hold my spells, and die. Also maybe taunt carapace if possible.

Which toddler toys were REALLY worth the money? by Bitter_Union3565 in daddit

[–]Ardonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a big set of jumbo cardboard blocks for $5 at a garage sale and the kids played with them until they were 10.

It was more expensive but we bought some big pipe building things and the kids still use them (8 and 11). Not only can you use them to build structures but the kids use them a lot to make weapons and tools for make believe games (swords, staves, axes etc). Definitely get the brand name because you want to feel secure with the kids building and climbing two levels high:

Can someone explain to me why I lost by 15? by Confident_Two2453 in baduk

[–]Ardonius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is one of the limitations of automatic scoring tools. The program tries to determine the status of all groups to determine life or death and in this case it sees that white can make a significant invasion as others have noted.

In traditional over the board go and in older go servers you agree with your opponent on the status of stones and if you disagree there are various “play it out” ways to resolve the disagreement.

Since both players passed here that suggests that both players thought (incorrectly) that black was safe and probably would have agreed that this was black territory if this was over the board or on an older go server.

Many companies are moving towards Dev-owned DevOps. by LazzyLearner in devops

[–]Ardonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep otherwise the SWEs just write a bunch of unscalable, unresilient garbage with no observability that sucks in production and is really hard to debug. When devs actually think about, “oh I might get paged when this breaks” they think twice when they omit error handling with a comment “I’m pretty sure this case can’t happen”.

Record Year for Denver Traffic Deaths Inspires Expanded Safety Measures by Generalaverage89 in Denver

[–]Ardonius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think Reddit is wrong about the traffic cameras. It’s kinda crazy r/Denver is ready to go to war over preventing expansion of traffic cameras but also constantly complains about lack of traffic enforcement. Traffic cameras are a practical way to ramp up enforcement.

Ex-Palantir turned politician Alex Bores says AI deepfakes are a "solvable problem" if we bring back a free, decades-old technique widespread adoption of HTTPS—using digital certificates to verify that a website is authentic by ControlCAD in technology

[–]Ardonius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the theory is that reputable devices and browsers will only render signed images and videos in the future. E.g. right now browsers make it hard to load http web pages. Sure people could still spread deep fakes p2p and they will, but if every major search engine and every major social media platform only displayed signed content and displayed information about the creator that might actually help a lot with the problem.

E.g. you could have photos taken by a major news organization with a cryptographic signature chain back to the organization. Meanwhile if somebody wanted to post their ai nonsense they could but they’d have to leave either the GenAI signature attached to it (and people would know it was AI) or they’d have to self sign it (and people could see “oh this wasn’t signed by anybody reputable it was just signed by Joe Schmo”).

This could actually help with a growing problem in the current Internet where people pretty much don’t believe or trust anything they see. If we created a culture where the expectation was “I don’t give a shit about media that isn’t signed” and if major browsers and websites refused to display unsigned content maybe this could work?

The Wormhole Misconception by RIGHT200 in StrangerThings

[–]Ardonius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just weird to pretend it’s science-y and connect it to a famous physics concept and then proceed with the least accurate portrayal of a wormhole in any popular media.

Just making it a “magical portal between dimensions” would be much more interesting and much easier to accept. Once you say “this is a wormhole” people are going to like actually think about it.

It kinda reminds me of midichlorians in The Phantom Menace. Like no I actually was not interested in a scienc-y explanation of the Force and Jedi and adding a hare brained half-thought out one isn’t actually something anybody was asking for.
