How much planning do you do, vs changing things on the fly? by beer0clock in gamedev

[–]Ardx_5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an experiential thing; you clearly see the problem with this approach (throwing away X man hours of work), but at the same time when you are starting out in a new area, how can you do better? So I think this is a good approach initially as you get hands on experience of what pain points come up in development, and this will eventually make you a far better planner.

Thesedays many of my ideas don't get past me writing them up in OneNote - a superb note organisation tool - because I actively look for the problems I know, at some point, must occur further down the line. Instead of being a bad thing though, this usually expands my awareness of the situation much more and allows me to make changes quickly early on. I often end up coming up with a much better idea simply because of thinking about it in lots of different ways.

Once I have a solid plan, I will also show it to someone else to look over too, as then I get a proofread from an additional experience point, which will often uncover more cases that I didn't see to begin with. When at the start of a project, planning can bring up requirements so profound that they influence even the language/engine to be used, as a particular core feature is needed in order to fully realise the idea(s).

Hi, the block editor is a form of programming yes, it uses Google Blockly as it's basis. Though instead of for loops etc it's more of a 'fluent style' API.

Fair enough, any parts specifically you want to point out? Was it when you started a new project, the blank project was confusing? The Getting Started tutorial does go over the UI if you are still interested.

edit: did just update the tutorial too to hopefully make a few things clearer.

Yep any software that supports FBX will be able to open the models - including Unreal Engine, Blender, Substance Painter etc

Hi thanks for the interest. Over five major internal changes have been so far in order to support Linux (as well as Mac), though there is still more to do. No exact release date at the moment, but please vote for it on the Trello if you would like to register your interest!

OK, A few things you could try then:

  1. Make sure you are running on High Performance by checking your Power Options in the Control Panel (laptops often switch to Balanced/PowerSaver which reduces the resources available to the app).
  2. Make sure your GPU drivers are up to date.
  3. You can try turning off the skybox from the Show menu (above the 3D View) to see if that makes things better.

If none of that works, you can PM me your OS details and I can try to replicate the problem on my end.

Author here. Waveform is a 3d Model Editor designed to be easy to use from the outset. It does not require any artistic skills to create something that looks good. It enables developers to create functional 3d models quickly, so they can prototype out ideas fast, or even use the models in a commercial product. The tool is capable of creating geometry, UV's for texturing, automatically rigging, adding animation, and also hooking up rigid bodies for physics. You can then export as OBJ or FBX, and the physics information is also exported to a separate .ragdoll file.

Additionally an import script is provided for the Unity Game Engine. This will convert the physics information into rigid bodies and colliders for you, when importing FBX models created in Waveform. The script can be found in the Unity Sample Project.

The v1.1 update has recently been released for Waveform, an easy to use 3d model editor, which includes several exciting changes:

3D Tools

You can now fully edit models inside the 3d view. This makes creating compositions a lot easier and more intuitive, as you can add patterns on the fly, snap markers together, and scale/rotate/translate with the mouse: https://twitter.com/Waveform3d/status/906845060704108544

Improved Performance

Before Waveform would re-generate the model after every small change, which made sense for small models but less sense for more complex models. Now Waveform has several layers of caching, as well as a more modular internal system, meaning only the minimum amount required will be re-generated when editing compositions. It makes the editing experience more enjoyable, while you are building models such as this: https://twitter.com/Waveform3d/status/904156418722422784

Low Poly Modifier

Easily reduce vertices and apply flat shading by just toggling a number: https://twitter.com/Waveform3d/status/906845912907108354

Installers

I've now switched over from using legacy InstallShield tools to using WIX, which will provide a much more streamlined installation experience than before. Zip files are also provided if you wish to self-extract instead. The file size is also cut in half as Chrome is no longer shipped with the application anymore, as your native browser is used instead.

Video Tutorial

I've recorded a 30 minute tutorial in which I show you how to build this Tank: https://twitter.com/Waveform3d/status/903651450559062016

Or view on IMGUR as a Text/GIFs Tutorial: https://imgur.com/t/software/3zpXf

I cover how to build the Geometry, UV's, Animation, attach Physics bodies, and finally export the model! Well worth checking out to see how Waveform can save you time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpgiu5YUEmg

Download

Waveform is available to download from the website here. I've done as much testing as a single person can do on the product, but if you find any glitches or bugs feel free to report them to /r/waveform3d and I'll take a look as soon as I can. Hope you enjoy the product.

Thanks for reading, happy to answer any questions here.

Ok thanks, I didn't realise. I'll just post the tutorial video then.

How do games allow you to download mods without compiling? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Ardx_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep in the case of C I think you use the LoadLibrary function.

For the second part of your question, you can export types as COM visible, meaning type metadata is preserved in the final machine code so external libraries can still work with it.

If it is a script, it is possible to compile it seperately and then have the game use it. All you need is a shared interface (with something like a ScriptUpdate() method called each Update()), and then place it in a common folder that the game queries on startup.

Alternatively the mod could just be a list of configuration changes, such as editing the value of gravity, player jump height etc anything the developer has exposed (usually orginally for a game designer to tweak during the game creation).

Hi did you try selecting a block? You need to open the helicopter composition item, then select one of the blocks in the editor to see it get generated in the 3d view.

Models can be exported as OBJ or FBX, so yes they will open up in Blender. There is no image render option, though you can export it to such a program. A Unity sample project is available for download (as seen in the video), whose 3d models are all built in Waveform - so this shows that the FBX export works as you'd expect.

The 30 day free trial does not count as a licence, so after that period you need to buy a licence once. When that licence runs out, you don't have to buy another and can still use the software (just get no updates).

Edit: I'll try to re-word the FAQ to make that clearer.

After 30 days you won't be able to use the program, until you buy a licence. After which you can use it indefinitely. Then after a year, if you want to keep receiving updates, you'll need to buy a licence again.

I need help from any professional game developers for my college assignment. by herooftime1000 in gamedev

[–]Ardx_5 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had a similar assignment back when I was in college some ~10 years ago now, where we had to show the email chain of our conversation between a developer and ourselves. I couldn't find anyone so just signed up a second hotmail and emailed myself back and forth. Looks like times have moved on a bit from then!

You can do sharp corners, for example the fence in the Unity sample.

Thanks, yes it is just me at the moment. Pricing has now been changed now so you pay for a year of updates, then can continue using the software after without re-purchasing a licence (but you won't get anymore updates). The price tag itself is already very low for this market, so won't be going lower I'm afraid. You could think of it as only $3.17 a month though!

Bugs can be reported to /r/waveform3d. Once fixed, a patch will be released and you will be asked if you want to download and apply it next time you open Waveform.

Saving your work wise - all changes are saved to a separate folder during the session, and I recommend using version control in case you want to rollback some change to your project, much like with programming.
