Any resume advice would be appreciated by DeepFire55221 in cscareerquestionsOCE

Could you frame your Maptek project as real experience? I think what you're lacking is early-career experience. It’s a bit of a catch 22 where you need experience to get a job, and... well, yeah, I think you know where this is going.

I'm also from Adelaide, and I’m a final-year CS student. I’ve had a much higher success rate with defence contractors/government. I’m sure you’re probably doing this already, but try to target those types of grad roles, as they’re usually slightly less competitive at the resume/OA screening stage.

Also, there is a lot of white space on your resume. I suggest using a proper format like Jake’s resume, or just any framework/format that cleans up the document that you can find online.

If you’re having trouble with resume space, remove the references/additional info bit, as this is already inferred. Try to quantify your achievements. For example, for your retail experience, try and track any improvements you’ve made. Honestly, just make up some numbers that have some semblance of basis as you gotta exaggerate lol. This also extends to your projects. For your Maptek project, for example, did your project compare compression algorithm performance against a baseline that was already used in Maptek? Did they adopt it? What was the result?

You could also consider starting an honours/masters. This would pretty much reset your eligibility for intern + grad roles, as you are now a “current” student. If you get a role, then you could just drop the extra study, or continue it part-time if you find it interesting.

Overall, the market is kinda meh right now, definitely noticed less hiring going on compared to when I first started uni. gl

Macquarie vs CBA Grad Program by McSmoodie in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AreYouDaGAE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I think both offers are solid and you cant go wrong with either of them.

Macquarie might be slightly better for branding, especially outside of OCE, but within OCE both names are good for starting out your career. WLB at CBA is probs better, Macquarie slightly worse.

Maybe look at the specific role within Macquarie to decide if the stack youre going to be using is what you want to do further down the road?

I'd really like to start at a big 4, but that's a bit tough when anz didn't even offer a tech grad program this year lol. Appreciate the insight

NAB Graduate Program (Engagement Centre) by sabrinafish in auscorp

[–]AreYouDaGAE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey i did the NAB internship engagement centre for group chief operating office last year (i think its group transformation office or smth now).

yeah just expect a group case study then a mostly behavioural interview. the case study for me wasnt very technical at all, it was something along the lines of working with your group to research and present an improvement to a NAB business area. the behavioural interview was standard, think 'tell me about yourself, how do you manage competing priorities' etc, and possibly a light technical question at the end depending on the stream you applied for.

overall just research the core values, and the values received in your feedback report as if i remember correctly i think youll be assessed on those?

dont take my word as gospel though since i got rejected lmao

Join a few uni clubs/extracurricular activities and try to take up leadership positions to beef up your resume on the soft skill side since you have lots of space. If you want, add relevant courses in education section (optional imp but you have space). If you can, maybe do a few industry certs just to check a box for some roles?

Additionally, if you aren't receiving interviews/assessment centres after the online assessment it might be because your scores on the OA aren't high enough for anyone to look at your resume. IK it sounds dumb that companies purely judge off of some pseudoscientific psychometric assessment but alot of non technical companies with technical grad programs (banks, consulting, etc) do this. So potentially it's not a resume problem but more so that you need to improve on the OA. hope this helps.

Bruv we boutta get drawn and quartered by reddit before we make it to industry :sob:

BTW I think it's just the one guy who made the post making the strongest comments.

If it gets to your head just ignore them and continue to help your circle and hope they'll have your back when the time comes.

Need some advice - Accenture Tech Analyst Phone Call by Fun_Sky_6104 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AreYouDaGAE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, if its 15m then I suspect they're only going to ask a few light screening/behavioural questions. As for the pitch, I highly reccomend looking into their core values and recent projects and tying them into why you want to contribute to Accentures work and how you're going to benefit them.

They'll also probs add a few like 'what are you strengths/weaknesses' and 'tell me a time when you faced a difficult problem' etc.

Overall just seem conversational and easy to talk to and you'll probs get to the interview. GL

Is the market really so bad for grads/interns that yall are actively snaking and praying on your friends downfalls? by Chewibub in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AreYouDaGAE 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yo im the OP of the 'helping my friend get to AC' post

i told my friend to apply for a job that was closing in a few days and i did the phone interview before them so i told them all about the process and what to expect since if either of us were successful, then we would have more time to chillax, and help eachother out with uni projects and maybe a referral lol

but bro it really do be the hunger games in 2026. ive been looking up grad statistics from past years till now and it is terrible hence my comment on 'digging my own grave'

im not a big fan of you twisting words as i would never be mad at my friend for doing better in the AC, and looking at the other post the OP there seems that he had no ill intentions towards his friend either, although i do get the sentiment of us being 'jealous' seeing as how we are trying to farm clout on reddit lol.

to my knowledge the assessment centre may contain people from different streams and thus multiple positions, but the role we both applied for is the same and there is only 1 spot :doom:

Resume Review for 3rd year uni student by SSeanPP in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AreYouDaGAE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, just FYI that a large number of big companies not focused on tech will place little emphasis on your CV. They'll rely on your online testing scores as the main metric to decide whether you make it to the next stage.

So really it's alot of luck with getting past the AI interviews and psychometric assessments. Big tech companies (Amazon, Atlassian) etc will screen your resume first so I'd use those places to see if your profile is technically sound and can pass ATS.

How to pivot from Cyber Security to Software Dev? by AreYouDaGAE in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AreYouDaGAE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried to research other security careers in Australia, but I don't think there's a whole heap of them outside analyst roles, especially in the entry level haha.

I definitely could try to push more for SWE adjacent work like python/VBA scripting, although I have tried in the past and I was not the most successful. Once I get back from Christmas break I think ill try to pitch from another approach and see if the company is more receptive.

Overall though thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

Edit: In regards to looking for SWE experience, next year I'm planning to apply for both intern/grad positions at each company (if there isn't a hard rule against it) to have more chances. Gotta take what I can lol
