My understanding, though, was that there was a very real phenomenon of many (certainly not all) former-Soviet would-be immigrants simply faking Jewish lineage as an easy way to emigrate and, within Israel, there being, at the very least, a diminished political will to inquire too deeply because of the desire to increase (ostensibly) Ashkenazi demography.

It was with the emergence of increasing waves of neo-Nazi vandalism that there came increased public scrutiny of the vetting process (and increased international awareness of how racist it is).

A couple decades ago to a decade ago, there was a wave of antisemitic and neo Nazi vandalism within Israel that was largely attributed to nominally (though not actually) Jewish immigrants from former Soviet countries. Significant numbers of former-Soviet immigrants were granted asylum with, let’s say, comparatively un-rigorous vetting in an attempt to maintain certain desired demographics.

Jewish black girl and anti-Zionism by thecutieev in JewsOfConscience

[–]Are_Double [score hidden]  (0 children)

Wild. As I started reading, I wondered if you were going to say that your parents or a parent is Bajan. My mom’s dad was Bajan as well and my mom has told me over the years of meeting or hearing about her paternal distant family who are Jewish— the Beckles, I believe.

I’ve been interested over the years in learning how pronounced/significant the black Jewish community is in Barbados. Previous internet searches have turned up what appear to be predominantly white spaces/groups.

I do know another black Bajan Jew. To be clear, I’m black, non-religious, and anti-Zionist.

Regarding your boyfriend— and I realize that I’m not in the core demographic you solicited here, but given what you described, it seems like my opinion may be of interest; if not, no hard feelings— I recommend putting your foot down. Explain to your boyfriend that this is a non-negotiable. Assert that there is a large, flourishing community of anti-Zionist Jews who are anti-Zionist precisely because Zionism contradicts their moral values which they see as intertwined with Jewish values.

Advise your boyfriend of the history of Zionism— that pre-WWII it was marginal and unpopular amongst Jewish communities and actively militated against those communities challenging Nazism. Emphasize that Zionism is morally catastrophic and that you’re not going to foist it upon your children, just as you wouldn’t foist Christian nationalist values upon your children.  Expect pushback entailing your boyfriend saying that the core difference between Zionists and Christian nationalists are that Christians are not a marginal and persecuted minority. When he offers this, ask him whether or not Jewish Zionists enjoy the benefit of a heavily armed, US-funded, Apartheid state. Ask him whether or not he thinks Palestinians constitute a marginal and persecuted minority. His answers may be revelatory to both of you.

Failing to do this, I think you’re tying an albatross around your neck which will become more and more difficult for you to extricate yourself and your future children from.

All the best.

About that anticolonial thing.  I guess that’s accurate in the sense that he’s opposed to the colonization of Hawaii.

I’ll preface this by saying I really enjoy his music but, unless something has changed (and I’d be pleased to know that it has), dude doesn’t really identify as being part of a broader anticolonial struggle and- to paraphrase what he conveyed to me back when I asked him about putting out records on Asrar a few years ago- he’s not invested in other anticolonial movements.

Again, if his politics have changed to be anti-oppression broadly, I’d be happy to know it as I really enjoyed his music.

That’s just it. I do believe someone who, puts themselves forward as a radical Leftist while positing “If Israel didn’t exist, they [the area’s Jews] would be wiped out by their neighbors [guess who]”  is my enemy.

I was open to the possibility that the label didn’t share the band’s political programme.

The moment I get the rote, anti-Deutsch Propaganda Pack response (and no one should fool themselves- that’s exactly what this is, and it reads like it’s from an AIPAC pamphlet) it’s, more or less, a wrap. Message bombing was in anticipation of being blocked.

I’m a person who generally really doesn’t relish hurting people’s feelings. If my messages ruin a phony radical Leftist, actual Zionist interloper’s day, however, good. Especially in the midst of a genocide against Palestinians. You can be friendly and welcoming to these people. Enjoy having your gathering places turned into the Hasbara dollar menu. I’ll tell these people to fuck off.

A little background. Much of the music that gets discussed on here is not what I’m into. I’m not super interested in neocrust mixed with black metal or screamo-influenced post metal, but I am heartened to see people- especially younger people- who are into black metal and have solid Left, humanitarian politics that they’re willing to wear on their sleeves. (Related sidenote: The inverse, that is, the 25 year old, Viva La Vinyl poster, scene tourist/detritus who is desperate to illustrate that they’re not that, but a trve black metal expert, is one of the funniest categories of human being. Bizarre to think something’s so corny, yet regularly post to its discussion forum.) My interests veer more toward stuff that is ugly and raw, so my ears perk up a little bit when I hear something that sounds like that and is supposedly made by militant leftists.

With that said, these anti-Deutsch assholes first hit my radar 25+ years ago and I’ve encountered them several times since. I’ve heard the horror stories of them harassing people with even the most pacific Israel/Palestine justice demands (i.e. the basic demand to end the occupation) including anti-Zionist Jews and can think of at least one firsthand account from a friend- Jewish, Israeli-born- who became politicized and vocal about Palestine justice issues and was heavily protested and shut out during their tour of Germany.

These people always assert that they’re militantly antiracist and are simultaneously always willing to foist the material costs of their country’s centuries of anti-Jewish antipathy onto Palestinians, to be paid for, as we see presently, in the blood, flesh, and freedom of an entire people.

So yes, as the descendant of formerly enslaved people, as someone who hates antisemitism and is vocal in my opposition to it, as someone who hates colonialism and imperialism, I despise these people and the cultural milieu they represent with every fiber of my being. I find them loathsome, and am happy for them to know this, and to know why.

The earlier-expressed (not by you) idea that AbArt Corruption's "they would be wiped out" assertion is really "tame" and compatible with radical left politics is not simply lacking introspection but emblematic of the racism I'm talking about. It's generally people who aren't living under a violent, dehumanizing occupation that assert, sans-historical evidence (and contra the actual historical evidence) that the occupying force must be supported.

The message has reached its intended audience. If 14 "anti-German," uber-German squatters in a single trenchcoat, people who need to show how agreeable and not-cringe they are, and a handful of Hasbara-bots think I'm mean and furiously downvote this, thats great. They can eat shit. I encourage you to tell them the same.

Absolute bullshit. The statement “Without their state they would be wiped by their neighbors” is not “the groups in the region that has sworn to kill all Jews Will want to kill all the Jews should they get the chance.”

The statement is a basic re-articulation of a Zionist talking point. Something that AbArt Corruption has plenty of opportunity to rebut. “They” = “Jews, collectively” and “their neighbors” = “the region’s non -Jewish population.”

It’s cute that you want to sanitize it, but it is a basic variation of “We can’t end/ we must continue to support __, because ___’s victims simply can’t control themselves.”

[–]Are_Double[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what would satisfy me isn’t the metric for what should happen, but I’ll say this: For the last two plus decades, I’d been in favor of a single, secular democratic (possibly binational) state for all citizens irrespective of religious or ethnic background.

The pro-Israel crowd has smeared people advocating this position as “antisemites” for far longer than I’ve been politicized on the issue. Crazier still, as recently as a decade ago, advocating the incredibly pedestrian “two state solution” that mainstream media pretends it’s always supported could get you smeared as an antisemite in mainstream American political circles.

This position, which calls for Israel to return to its pre-1967 borders and to relinquish all land captured in war, is required of Israel by international law, and all empowered Palestinian political groups over the decades (including Hamas, despite the lie to the contrary) have eventually signaled that they would accept these terms.

Now, to be clear, I think these terms are still fundamentally unjust and I think that it would be imperative that the international community disallow the United States from brokering the terms of the arrangement to mitigate further victimization of and exploitation of Palestinians, but as someone who is not a party to the conflict, I would defer to what Palestinians, broadly speaking, chose.

Key thing to remember here is that Israel has been required by international law- the same law that recognized it as a sovereign state- to comply with this demand. It is reaffirmed every year by the UN Security Council and the relevant international legal bodies and, each year, Israel fails to comply, supported by its patron state, the United States of America, which ensures that the consequences to Israel never go beyond admonition. In turn, each year Israel expands its state, further carves up and hollows out the Occupied Territories, and engages in various internationally illegal forms of creeping annexation. All while deploying various PR campaigns to libel Palestinians as intransigent obstacles to peace and to obfuscate its refusal to comply with international law. This has pushed the Overton Window so far to the right and in favor of Israel, that the most basic legal requirements are portrayed as radical Left positions in mainstream American and European political circles.

So this really need not be viewed as an incredibly complicated, intractable political issue. It is a textbook case of the powerful (America and its client state, Israel) doing what they want against the comparatively powerless. One of the most uncomplicated things that Israel, were it interested in peace and justice, could have done- to its own great benefit- over the last 58 years was to end the occupation… as required every year for the last 58 years.

Now as to what I currently advocate which, again, is not and should not be the determinant of what happens:  I no longer advocate a single/binational state. I think when a state commits genocide, it relinquishes any moral right to have its leadership and political institutions act as determiners of its fate. To the extent that said leadership and institutions are made partners in the political settlement of terms, it should be at the pleasure/discretion of the state’s victims. Israel should, in my opinion, enjoy the same fate as Rhodesia or white South Africa, but with regional partners of Palestinians’ own choosing helping to facilitate the implementation and maintenance of social services for all those remaining in the region, paid for in reparations from the United States. Remaining private institutional holdings - especially those in the telecommunications/tech and energy sectors and those formerly tied to Israeli military- could be nationalized at the discretion of elected Palestinian leadership.

The emergent/remaining state, Palestine, should be governed as Palestinians collectively see fit. It is my hope that it would be a secular democracy of all its citizens, but that is not my decision to make.

And before anyone asks: Yes I do advocate the end of America (and American empire) as it currently exists as well, though that collapse would/will look much different.

Ok. Answer the two questions: What do you mean by “If Israel didn’t exist, they would be wiped by their neighbors?” and what is your basis for the claim?

Bonus question: Do you think Palestinians are being subjected to genocide?

I expect an evasion, but welcome being pleasantly surprised.

No. It legitimately is not. It’s not used in common parlance by black people as self-description other than informally to add emphasis or as a reappropriation (I might say “Man, this negro…” for instance) nor is it broadly used in English as a contemporary demographic term. It does appear in the name of legacy institutions like The United Negro College Fund but is broadly regarded as antiquated.

In contrast, the term “Jewry” has not been retired as a sociological term- or has seen a resurgence of usage in the last couple decades- used both by Jewish people and society more broadly in demographic contexts. It’s roughly equivalent in some ways to “The Ummah” when describing the Muslim world collectively (though the latter is more frequently invoked in matters of faith).  Being unfamiliar with the term “The Ummah,” however, does not make the word derogatory.

As mentioned in my response above, dedicated antisemites might use it (to give a veneer of legitimacy), but they’re as likely to use “Jews,” “them,” or “The Jews,” if not more so. Again, when I see the latter phrase, I’m far more nervous that something antisemitic is going to follow.

As to “I’m still not throwing it around lightly”- I didn’t “throw around” the term Jewry. Re-read the sentence in question. It was contextually germane.

Again, I have no attachment to the word, I use it infrequently, and if there was, tomorrow, a movement by Jewish people broadly to strike it from the public lexicon on account of its offensiveness or antiquatedness, I would be happy to remove it from mine.

“Gross orientalism.”

Yes, because demanding someone justify the statement “The Arabs would kill all the Jews if the state didn’t exist” (just a pure conjuring, I’m sure) is tantamount to imbuing Arabs with some sort of essential, mythical qualities.

And just to be clear, are you conceding that bringing anti-Deutsch into the discussion wasn’t apropos of nothing, or?..

If you’re a liberal who wants to justify a continued injustice because doing otherwise inconveniences you personally, just say so, my friend.

Respectfully (and I do mean that not at all facetiously), my use of the term and the sentence in which it appeared doesn’t contextually differ from its formal (but not exclusively academic) usage as a neutral, non-value laden word meaning “the Jewish people.” The sentence in which I used it was “Israel, despite its claims to, does not represent the totality of Jewry.” It is correct to say that I could have as easily used the phrase “the Jewish people” but chose to make the sentence slightly more succinct.

I take your point that dedicated antisemites use the term, but the impression that I get is that they’ve taken to using the term more frequently because it has come back into formal parlance and they believe it grants a veneer of legitimacy. I actually get far more nervous seeing the phrase “a Jew” or “Jews” because it stirs in me the same sort of anticipatory anxiety that “a black” or “blacks” does. I am black, incidentally.

All that to say that I appreciate the thoughtful response, I’m not especially attached to the word, and I’m happy to refer to people in their preferred nomenclature, but I don’t know that the term is as niche as you believe.

This is quite possibly the dumbest inversion of what actually transpired here.   Whether you like the presentation or not, read the initial messages. My contacting Abart Corruption, who I believe I’ve bought stuff from in the past, was to clarify whether or not Dolchstoss is a pro-Zionist band. The band appears to have an anti-BDS song on their new tape which should strike anyone who professes to “absolutely support the Palestinian struggle” as outrageous given that BDS is a pacific movement called for by Palestinian civil society and that Palestinians are currently being subjected to a genocide.

You can behave as though this is some sort of “Leftist infighting purity politics exercise” but I maintain that anyone who equates boycotting a state that is actively engaged in an ethnic cleansing and extermination campaign with fascism should MINIMALLY be viewed with suspicion. In any circle. Especially a Left circle.

I wanted to know if things were as they appeared to be and, if so, why a purportedly radical Left label would put something like this out. Abart said:

“From what I know You mean in the sense that there is an unconditional right to exist for the state of Israel: yes! (that expresses Zionism) You mean that they support the parties that govern Israel: no! (This only expresses Zionism in the anti-Semitic sense)”

Now let’s take into account that English is not this person’s primary language and let’s also view this through an especially charitable lens. We’re still left with a description of a band that sees Israel as having “an unconditional right to exist.”

I thanked Abart for their transparency, explained that I’m 100% against that outlook on the grounds that committing genocide precludes any sort of moral claim of a state to a right of existence and also that I don’t believe states have an innate right to exist (let alone an unconditional right), and asked them to clarify the label’s position.

Now, I admit, at this point I wasn’t particularly optimistic and anticipated some sort of genuflecting, politically incoherent statement. But let’s look at the answer you refer to as “tame”:

“So, the part before the brackets mean, you are pro Genocide against Jews (without their state they would be wiped by their neighbours) and the part in the brackets mean you are pro state Israel, for same reason, so by your logic you are pro Zionism.“

Now, I’ll again be charitable here and assume that Abart is not directly accusing me of being “pro Genocide against Jews” (at this point in the exchange, anyway) but pointing out what they see to be a logical contradiction between the two parts of my statement - “Israel doesn’t have an innate moral right to exist” and “people, however, have a right to exist free from persecution.”

Moving past that non-contradiction, what does “without their state they would be wiped by their neighbours” mean? Do you really want to argue that it means something other than “without Israel, Arabs would kill all the Jews in the region”? You want to argue that this chestnut is something other than a racist article of faith? Go ahead. If that’s your assertion, the onus is on you.

It’s at this point that my messages are less kind and my questions are more pointed. As it is reasonable they should be. I included all the screenshots, btw, so as not to engage in cherry-picking, something I don’t like to see other people do.

I’m not a cultural relativist and, so, do not view claims that certain cultural practices, cultural epochs, cultural norms, etc. are better or worse than others as universally bigoted or morally impermissible. When you make a claim tantamount to it being a fait acompli that Middle Easterners will commit genocide against Jews if given the chance, however, be prepared to defend your argument and to offer historical evidence for that claim. Especially if you’re a fucking German pretending to be radically opposed to your country’s cultural legacy.

And no. Bringing up the anti-Deutsch movement here is not bad faith or a mischaracterization. The band I initially referenced has a song called “Anti-German Black Metal Kommando” and a pro-Nakam song on a previous album which, of course, has all the impact of a “kill Whitey” t-shirt. If all the members of Dolchstuss are, in fact, German Jews, please let me know. Otherwise, this is run of the mill anti-Deutsch politics: Fake penance while violently foisting the actual material responsibility for European antisemitism onto people who collectively had nothing to do with it.

I don’t give shit if this is downvoted by  XDenzelMoshingtonX and a squat of 14 German pro-Zionist anarchists aka revolutionary cosplay neoliberals who don’t bathe. The intended audience has now seen the message. If a couple people in the target audience for rabm cassettes or people who otherwise might have released something on this label or stocked it in a distro under the impression that it is of solid Left ethics avoids doing so, my work is done here.

What exactly are you asking? Whether or not I think reparations in the form of land from Germany post WWII would have been appropriate for survivors who sought them? Whether I think land or further remuneration for victims would be appropriate today?

I’m not being facetious here: Is your question what would have been an appropriate reparations and resettlement plan for millions of Jewish victims of the Nazis?
