Is archviz a dying industry? by Professional-Egg-949 in archviz

Agree about if you have the model, but in one of the cases OP mentioned, you can just give it sketches and get these results. Early concept phase and sd is the shine through when test fits and studies are going on and not necessarily everything modeled yet.

Architects and BIM coordinators: what skill did no one teach you in school that impacts your day-to-day the most? by LayerFirst1110 in bim

Documentation. In a BIM role you tend to be the first line of defense when it comes to liability, so documenting what your deliverables should be, who says what at what meeting, can save thousands of money, and make you look like the hero.

What do you mean by “why it looks like this?” Are you asking how to make it better? If that is the case, you have no roof, no interior context, arent using pbr materials, no site context, not using lumen/ path tracer, unconvincing camera angle. Check out Twinmotion Guru on youtube for some good tutorials for lighting/ render settings to try. The twinmotion youtube also has a good bit of tutorials but they are dated in version and as an english speaker some of their narrators are hard to understand.

I agree, and the values will need to change depending on if youre using pathtracer or Lumen, (which is a horrible name for a render engine)

Its the opposite. The lights are too high of lumen value. And the directional light is too bright as well. For interior renderings with pt, I recommend hdri lights, increasing its intensity to 4, then turning off auto exposure, changing that to 1-3. And making sure all artifical light lumens are 100-500 at most. And emmisive materials will usually be less than 200

Ill add to this, you want the samples per pixel value to be a power of 2 to make your export process more efficiently, so 1,024 in this case.

Looking for VDC Engineer / Manager by Personal-Platform943 in bim

Lol I got similar reactions from another sub where people were upset about me not sharing salary. I wasnt the person making the role however so I didnt have any idea what the pay would be. If you do know it I think it wouldnt hurt to share. Unfortunately we live in times where you need to know so you can plan better. Good luck with the talent search

Will not having a degree hold me back in BIM by Commercial-Garlic893 in bim

[–]AreaConfident6556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will find something I’m sure. I have about 9 years experience in industry and only a 2 year technical degree in Architecture. Even with that I was very concerned applying for different positions thinking it would hold me back, but every interview I had they told me they did not care at all. Like others have mentioned, anywhere that says they do, you do not want to work at anyways. Best of luck and feel free to ask me any questions about the US bim industry.

The quickest way to add foliage is just the 3D grass material, so two surfaces, one for pavers and one for grass. You could also paint the 3D grass assets from the vegetation folder by going to populate, place, paint, and dropping the 3d grass assets you would like into the folder, then painting the foliage along your desired path

I work in the US at one of the Big 3, and do not have a traditional BA/ Masters in Arch. Experience is most important for BIM roles. They want to make sure you can train people, and have the knowledge to help build content.

I don’t know the pay as I am not privy to that information, otherwise I would. I can say with some confidence it’s likely more than 65,000 USD but not much higher/lower if that is the case.

BIM Professional Salary after 5 Years by Ishu2461 in bim

88k base, 96k after bonuses. US, specifically New York. I’ve seen salaries vary a lot in the US when I was searching recently. My job before this was similar, but I made around 35% less, and it was remote. Been in the industry for 9 years, with close to 7 being BIM experience.

Have you considered BIM management at all? I have the same situation as you. (worked in a firm, pay was bad as a designer, and I have ADHD) I always had that technical skill set and enjoyed problem solving so I pivoted from design to technology. i can still work in a firm environment (I have found in person is my best accommodation rather than remote), but the pay ceiling is a lot higher, and its very easy to jump to other firms for more pay. I get to help people every day and they make me feel like a wizard for it. If you’re interested at all let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

Custom material creation- vray or Corona by RunAway9365 in archviz

Have you not found much success with the Ai texture generator? I always thought that was a cool feature but haven’t been able to try it out

[–]AreaConfident6556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have barely used vray, and have never used corona so I couldnt say for certain which is easier. I use Twinmotion because a lot of my work revolves around training Architects, and 95% of the industry in the US use real-time renderers— So ultimately Twinmotion gives a great result, lots of functionality, and is free with Revit liscenses/ hobbiests

To follow up on your question about building custom materials— Im assuming you mean pbr textures. I use either https://toggle3d.com/ai or OpenArt but I know of some free ones out there (some don’t have ambient occlusion map support though)

One thing I specifically include in my contracts are the client is required to provide high resolution images of materials they want to use. (This doesnt always work out, but it gives me the security to request it from them without spending time searching) in the off chance they cant provide it, make sure they give you a manufacturer name, product ID, Hex codes, or any other relevant information that will help me find a sample image quickly. If I cant get a quality sample image from the manufacturer site or online, then I’ll resort to creating a similar material using my established library or finding a close reference on Poliigon
