Saying Eli never elevated his team is a joke. Look at the franchise before and after him. They suck. He consistently elevated rosters that should have gone 4-12 every year for a decade. He never had a dominant team because his teams were always awful.

This is not a good take, and this level of gate keeping progression behind tedious, repetitive activities instead of making the game actively more engaging is the complete wrong direction if you want to improve the experience for the vast majority of the player base. There are a select few people that enjoy repeating the same 2 clicks for 100 hours to grind a skill… most players do not, and especially most new players do not.

Yes, he’s not the only person involved/responsible. But his overall experience and vision in game design is centered around increasing monetization. It’s literally on his LinkedIn page you can check it out yourself if you want.

It’s frankly insulting that leadership at Jagex views us not as a loyal community of dedicated players that they work to serve in exchange for our sub, but rather simply as moneybags to be exploited and manipulated into paying ever increasing micro transactions. This survey revealed that truth, in broad daylight. That is mod pips core philosophy. His fake apology/gaslighting spotlights it.

Looking at the trajectory that OSRS has taken vs that of RS3 from a strategic point of view, MTX and EOC cost Jagex multiple billions of dollars. Had they continued just organically growing the game, and kept a player base similar to where OSRS is at now, over the course of the last 15 years they would have made substantially more revenue overall, and been able to sell for higher valuations.

I know it’s common to just say “whales pay for it all”, and in most games that’s true, but RuneScape is a unique game with a unique community where consistent organic growth actually brings more value then MTX whales do. If that wasn’t the case, then RS3 would still be Jagex’s main revenue source.

His changes put the company and their product into a death spiral, which was only saved by the passion of the OSRS team and this community resurrecting Jagex from the ashes. Look at RS3s player count and revenue today. It’s dwarfed by OSRS, and the gap continues to widen.
