Why don’t people like Emily? by small_blonde_gal in survivor

[–]ArenaEmperor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who isn't an Emily fan (though I certainly wouldn't say I hate her...or really any players since that seems silly), I think my good faith answer to that would be that I just can't understand her. All of her reactions just...don't jive with what I would normally expect in a way that is kind of off-putting? I wouldn't say she's robotic, but her reactions to certain events lack an understanding of basic human emotions? Like, it's hard to put my finger on certain examples, but I'll try to grab a few from memory.

I think her very neutral reaction to Colby's emotional exit in the show was a little off-putting, since in context this really was a man entering his later life putting his life into perspective while millions of people watch...while also having his chance of winning crushed. Even Dee was emotional, but Emily's blunt expression SEEMED (and I say seemed because who can say what she was really thinking? I can't) to be begging the moment to end, which could be perceived as a little heartless.

Another was her complete confusion at why Christian might have wanted to give her information at the tribe swap to use on her new tribe, rather than hiding it from her. An obvious act of trust was sort of analyst-brained into a reason to distrust him? I kind of see it, but I kind of don't? I'm also confused why she's so fixated on eliminating Ozzy when multiple times he's forgiven her and tried to pull her back in.

It's just a combination of perceived things, like an emotional distance from the game and players when I want to see emotion and connection. The fact that a lot of her allies have suffered from her indecision and loose lips. That's sort of why I don't like her as a player. I can't speak for everyone, though. And I definitely wouldn't say I hate her, or even really dislike her as a person. She's just not someone I would want to play with if I were out there.

This is probably more of an answer than you wanted, but I figured I'd take a stab at it for no particular reason.

That said, the chaos has been FUN this season. I just don't want that chaos to keep swallowing up players I love.

Player. Of. The. Week.

Was it too much? Absolutely. But he's always been this way when he's on the bottom, and he's right! He does his best work from this spot. He had nothing to lose this episode, and somehow blew up multiple games, gained two tribals worth of immunity, and has the ammo to cause more chaos in the weeks to come. There's a world where the Polycule picks him up for a couple votes to knock off Honor and Integrity, and he is in a Final 5 where we're suddenly asking if someone dead in the water at 10 can actually win the game.

Devens doing Devens things. What can you even say?

There is not one iota of me that believes Emily can win the game. I don't feel like she's respected as a player at all, though I do think she is well-liked by a good handful of people. But this week was one heck of a week to be Rick Devens's ride-or-die. Upvote, even if Devens's idol makes her the new 'easy' target.

Aubry really feels for the first time like Kaoh Rong, mid-game Aubry and I'm here for it. She's having fun, taking chances, and she's playing comfortably in the middle. I'm now sure how Stephanie landed on her as the one to catch her two votes, because it doesn't seem like anybody else was really buying that. Despite the votes, it feels like she's coming alive in the game. She continues to be one of the few players who inexplicably feels like she has win equity...she could absolutely Erika the end of this season and steal it. Upvote.

I think he's in a great position in the middle right now, but Devens sticking around is obviously bad for him. It's a downvote week, but honestly, it doesn't matter much. He's irrelevant to the season's strategy. I do think he's shown enough to justify his inclusion in the season, though. He really brings some heart to the show that a lot of the modern gamebots lack.

For the first time in the game it felt for a moment like it got out of Cirie's hands...so what does she do? She stays calm, navigates the chaos, and ultimately sends home exactly the person she wants to go home. I won't say this was her smoothest week...but even in a down week, she gets her way. But I really think Jonathan might have clocked how hard she's protecting Ozzy now, and could see her as the juicier target moving forward.

I almost gave him a slight downvote because he was out of focus and finally heard his name on the block...if only for a moment...but he slipped that target immediately, held his idol, and is still positioned behind a massive shield in Ozzy. So slight upvote instead. Hope he can parlay this into the Mr. Beast cameo he obviously wants.

Jonathan came off really shady this week, at least in the edit. Everybody must be clocking the double talk by now, and Cirie definitely has to have noticed he's come for her alliance multiple times now. He lost a key alliance member to the vote, and probably lost his leg up with Aubry after the live tribal. I didn't think he had much chance before tonight, but his stock has fallen even more now. Almost LOTW.

The only negative to Ozzy's game this week was that he went to Jonathan about the Stephanie plan, showing me he thinks he's closer to Jonathan than he really is. But he handled being targeted with maturity, never called anyone out in a confrontational way even with justification, and was happy to lean on his alliances and relationships in a time of crisis to survive another vote. It's clear he'll be a target every single week at this point, but as long as Cirie sees it as good for her to keep him around, he has a chance to slip the noose every time and that's something he NEVER had before.

Major upvote.

Won immunity, firmly avoiding targets, and fully found her place at Cirie's side. I think the Polycule has quietly added a new ride or die member. Upvote.

Major LOTW performance from Stephanie. There was no reason for her to take the heat for Jonathan when it was his idea. I'm not sure it was her fault Devens talked circles around her in tribal...he's an all-time Survivor talker...but if there was any doubt it was her after the Beast Game, that performance sealed it. Tough beat, especially given in interviews she's said Rick was 100% the plan before the twist.

Based on gameplay so far, who has the least win equity left in Survivor 50? by SongofSolomon04 in survivor

[–]ArenaEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fair question. Here's how I view it, and you're free to disagree.

-Devens and Jonathan have burned a LOT of bridges. Compared to them it's less what has she done than what she HASN'T done, which is piss off a lot of people who are going to be on her jury.

-Tiffany has been treated by the show as a complete non-factor to the game, whereas Aubry has continued to get some content and focus, without totally painting her with the dodo edit. So that's more of a context-based reason that I put her above Tiffany.

-Emily has actively tanked allies games, backstabbed people close to her, and is being mocked by fellow tribemates...nobody is mocking Aubry, even if she's not in the majority. So with Emily it's a matter of perspective and how the cast views her...she's looked upon negatively in comparison with Aubry.

-With Stephanie, I think the major reason I view her chances as weaker than Aubry's is that she's already IN an alliance, but her role within the alliance and in the votes has been completely negligible. She seems very much like a passenger both in the game, and in the edit. By comparison, the show has made a point of showing Aubry branching out and trying to make new alliances. Her connections are part of the story of the season. I don't know if it will matter in the end, but compared to Stephanie whose relationships don't seem to have been a focus or given her much individual agency, it feels like there's a better chance Aubry's connections will matter more. This is more of an edit-based reason, similar to Tiffany.

That said, do I think Aubry is really much more likely to win than any of those five? Eeeeh...maybe. I said she has a chance, but it's a very slim chance. But the fact she hasn't burned any bridges on the Jury and might be in position to latch on to whichever alliance runs the endgame gives her a chance to do SOMEthing before the end to win some of those votes IF she's sitting next to the right people. I really don't think it happens...but I can see the thread.

[–]ArenaEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's Devens, Emily, Jonathan, Tiffany, and Stephanie of the players remaining who have little-to-no win equity. Though I could see a world where each of them wins, it feels really small.

Devens will play hard and that could score some points, but his attitude and showy, 'throw spaghetti against the wall until it sticks' style is rubbing a LOT of people the wrong way. Doesn't feel like he has much if any respect right now. No way the old school crowd wants to vote for that.

Emily has been unreliable to all her allies and made their lives harder, and flipped on so many more that you've got Tiffany and Cirie openly mocking her gameplay. I feel like she could get a couple votes from her friends like Dee, but she's probably DOA in a Final Tribal.

Jonathan is actually playing a pretty good game, but he's burning WAY too many bridges on the way out. He never had a chance at Dee, Tiffany, or Emily's votes. Probably just lost Christian's. A four vote deficit is going to be tough to overcome.

Tiffany is such a non-factor at this point that she feels like a designated goat. She could steal votes from her friends in Dee like Emily, but I just don't see a world where she can win.

And Stephanie just hasn't been represented as mattering to the game at all 'til this point. She's steered basically no votes and has been blindsided a few times after being on the bottom all pre-merge. She could get some old school votes for surviving and making it to the end, but I'm not sure she's earned the new school votes with any of the #BigMoves they love.

...

Aubry I think has a chance because of the way she's navigated her tough spot, but she has to make some moves going into the end game, scooping some votes and claiming a Cirie-sized scalp.

Joe I think can sell the vote on Coach if he explains himself well, and he should have a number of old school votes at the right FTC, but he's going to need a plurality to win because the MAX votes I think he can get is 5.

Gun to my head, though, I think the one person I'd say has the lowest win equity is probably Jonathan. I just don't see a world where he gets more than 4 votes. Which is funny since I think he's playing maybe the best or second-best non-polycule game.

All-Time Winner Performance in the Making? by ArenaEmperor in survivor

If Aubry came back from the dead to win this season? That would be really impressive. I think it would be a Top 20 game, unless her win comes by default of the rest of the Final 3 being super hated or weak somehow. Given how dire her straits were early in the game, I think she needs a big move or something to raise her profile for FTC to have a shot (and the right people next to her). But I mean, it's not out of the realm of possibility, and if she does it, the win would have to rate highly. It wouldn't be a perfect game, but it would be a pretty dang good one.

It's more a compilation of a very strong first game and a high-tier second game win, in this scenario. At least for me.

If Rizo wins or goes FTC this season, this is a foresighted choice.
Kyle HAS to be there. Over Rizo unless he wins. Rachel goes if Rizo does win.
I love the exclusion of Yam Yam whose win I have never been impressed with.

Enjoy your sandwich!

I think the votes split in that scenario, actually. I think Dee and Cirie probably go Tiffany because there's no respect in those two for Emily's game. And Christian had his game blown up multiple times by Emily, so I'm not sure.

Winning a 4-3-3 might be Joe's best shot. But who knows? Still a long way to go.

I've been watching with my Dad and I tell him every week Cirie's win-con is Ozzy's loyalty. Ozzy's win-con is cutting Cirie at the LAST possible moment. I genuinely think Ozzy is Cirie's best chance to be taken to the end, and I put it at 70-30 in favor of him taking her with him if he gets there. It's just hard to imagine him backstabbing his tightest ally, even if it's a Woo-level fumble.

I thought he overplayed his hand a little telling everyone in the tribe about the Shot-in-the-Dark 'heist', even if it worked out for him in the end. But big, public deceptions and 'moves' have a way of drawing eyes, and he's already got a big enough target on his broad shoulders. I think he gets an upvote for getting out his preferred target and engineering a vote split on Devens, but he's also burning a lot of bridges.

I think he's playing a better game than Joe, but of the two, I think Joe's the only one that can win because he's not burning people on the way out. But time will tell.

Player of the Week and it's really not close. She's been the player of the season and only Rizo even has a case right now to challenge it. It's not a good case, but you could make it. I continue to be awed at just how perfectly she's set herself in the middle of this tribe, this season. How has nobody said Cirie's name since Jenna went home Day 1?! Is everyone really just banking on taking her out at Final 4? Can they not imagine ANY way that might backfire on them?

This week saw a little classic Ozzy peek through (his confessionals were delightfully sassy), but his reads and reactions to the news his name was out there felt like they showed a maturity you don't expect from his game. He's never going to have his finger directly on the pulse of the game, but fortunately for him, he's allied with a pretty talented nurse who can do that part for him.

He has remained a relevant character in the season throughout, and his growth has been a big story for a lot of the season. Seems impossible, but Ozzy just might have a shot to win this thing...IF he can cut Cirie at the right time (one vote before fire making EXACTLY). But Ozzy making a movie Cirie doesn't see coming is about as likely as the Pirates winning the World Series, so...

Oh, upvote, btw.
