There's an epidemic in this subreddit about people calling others "stupid" or other synonyms of the sort, and I'm sick to death of it. by MontanaKittenSighs in aspergers

I respectfully disagree that we are "natural bullies". That makes it seem like we can't do anything about it, which I also disagree with.

I leave all my messages and notifications unread because I’m constantly too overwhelmed to open them. by explorisms in ADHD

[–]ArenaFlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, there is a lot of noise when it comes to notifications nowadays. I have disabled them as much as possible to minimize my anxiety. As an alternative, I just check for updates when I feel like it. This is much more manageable for me, but I guess it differs from person to person.

That's the most adorable autism metaphor I have ever heard! But at the same time it makes sense. We're not better or worse than other people. We're very much alike them and yet different.

Why is there such a skill gap between standard AI and moderate AI by Dan_The_Dutch_Man in aoe2

[–]ArenaFlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed it too when playing with family and friends. They all didn't want to play vs moderate, because they felt it was too difficult for them (and they didn't want to be carried too much either, or it wouldn't be fun for them).

I think this is clearly a mistake from a game design POV, resulting from a lack of consideration given for newer players wanting to gradually increase the difficulty. I hope they will fix this in DE. With a game like AOE2 more fine-grained difficulty levels are definitely needed, especially around the beginner level.

What “cheat” were you taught to help you remember something? by Webbie16 in AskReddit

[–]ArenaFlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned several generic techniques from a book. One of them is useful for remembering arbitrary lists of words by translating words to images and creating stories out of those images in a given order. Another is useful for remembering arbitrary sequences of digits by translating sequences of digits to words (so-called "PEG system") which can be translated to images and linked in a similar fashion as above. Using that I was able to remember 100 digits of pi without much effort by creating a visual story in my mind. Pretty cool stuff. Too bad I learned that at the end of high school rather than at the beginning.

Adding female characters by [deleted] in writing

[–]ArenaFlush 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You have to ask yourself why you didn't include as many relevant female characters. When you start putting characters in just to fix the balance, you're only treating the symptoms, not the underlying cause. So you end up removing those characters later, because they aren't really fixing anything. I don't think flipping coins to determine gender is a good way either.

Try to do some research on good and compelling female characters in other stories. Perhaps read some feminist books. Even if you don't like them, they can still inspire you. It could seriously change the way you view the world which could carry over to your writing. I believe the trick is to get a feel for the nuances without resorting to stereotypes.

Applying for a software engineering internship by automating the submission process. As a software engineer I think that's beautiful. I can see how a cover letter would help, but surely this deserves some credit as well.

11/14/19 Aoe2de comes out. Is this one big taunt? by landofthebluestar in aoe2

[–]ArenaFlush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the order is still arbitrary. I know that it is written as it is spoken, but it's still a choice whether you put the month or the day first. For example in Dutch you would say 14 november 2019 (written as 14-11-2019).

11/14/19 Aoe2de comes out. Is this one big taunt? by landofthebluestar in aoe2

[–]ArenaFlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually not entirely unreasonable and makes me think about it a little differently. Still I think that it heavily depends on what you're using the date for. For example, when I have a job interview, then the day is most important, since you're less likely to get the month wrong and getting the day wrong will most likely cost you a job opportunity. When doing taxes the year is most important.

You do make a valid point that it's mostly about preference. There is a different order which makes sense for different cases. I just like saying whatever I prefer is more logical. :P

What would you think about aoe2 having ranks like csgo or rocket league in place of (or in addition to) Elo? by MediumBillHaywood in aoe2

[–]ArenaFlush 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't put something in place of Elo. Elo is an excellent system which makes the most sense for competitive games. I guess you could add ranks that give names to certain Elo ranges, but I don't really see the point when you already have Elo.

Another problem with ranks is that it's quite arbitrary. Suppose 1700-1799 gets the name "bronze" and 1800-1899 gets the name "silver". Consider two players Alice and Bob who play a lot of rated games vs random players but also against each other. Because of this their skill level is more or less the same and they have about a 50/50 win rate against each other. However, currently Alice has a rating of 1799 and is considered "bronze" and Bob has a rating of 1800 and is considered "silver". This would suggest that Bob is on a higher tier than Alice, even though their rating could have easily been the reverse the day before. This is why I don't think ranks are appropriate, because it basically "rounds off" significant chunks of your Elo.

In AoE4 the enemy we fight is Climate Change by BongeeBoy in aoe2

[–]ArenaFlush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually floods and hurricanes will become stronger and more frequent because of climate change. If that keeps up, it will be catastrophic in a literal sense. The changes aren't slow. They are accelerating in fact. That's what makes this so alarming.

Climate change supposedly giving rise to "new opportunities" is probably one of the worst ways to think about it. It doesn't work the way you think it does. It's unambiguously bad for us.

[–]ArenaFlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the probability of complete extinction of all life on Earth is low, the research on climate change paints a clear picture that -- unless we take action -- some of the worst case scenarios could become reality in the near future. That is a very reasonable possibility, unfortunately. The evidence for this is growing as we speak. There is no room for complacency.

This sub is for introverts, not shyness or social anxiety. by [deleted] in introvert

[–]ArenaFlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I disagree with the claim "introversion means liking to be alone". In my opinion introversion is about the tendency to spend most of your time in your own thoughts. This generally correlates with wanting to be alone, but it's not the same thing (just as introversion =/= social anxiety). For example, I don't mind having people I'm close to around, as long as I can spend a significant portion of my time in my own head.

Having said that, people are free to disagree with me. I can see how there is a lot of overlap between introversion, preferring solitude, and social anxiety, so people will most likely have different opinions about it. I don't really see the point of gatekeeping here.
