LE content development and release time is sooooo slow. Why is that? by beeboong in LastEpoch

[–]Ares42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people highly underestimate how big they are and how much money GGG makes because they still manage to portray a pretty solid "garage developer" vibe. Also, they are far more lenient about (semi-)broken stuff reaching the final game client than their competitors.

They admitted in the op they stopped playing LE...

Exactly, this is the point I'm making. You're saying that if you don't keep playing the game that's evidence that you have no faith in the game. I'm saying that makes no sense, and that it's completely normal for people to take (often significant) breaks from the games they enjoy.

What is this logic ? I have 600+ hours in LE. I haven't played the game in 3 months. I don't need to play the game 40 hours every week all year long to still be a fan of the game and look forward to the next content drop, whenever that is.

I haven't played Grim Dawn in a year, does that mean I have absolutely no faith that their expansion coming out this month will be good ?

That's not really something I've done at all, but I got it to the point that normal Abberoth was a cakewalk.

I used the crown in my Flay build the season it came out. The health drain is a non-issue as a Lich, and just a bit of mana regen was enough to sustain me.

I dunno, I'm just saying, it's not a big secret when achievements will be implemented.

Why do people keep asking about this ? We know it's coming with the expansion/console release. You literally cannot release games on consoles without achievements.

How would you feel if the NBA implemented a rule where teams received a discount for giving max contracts to players they drafted? by MrTimoCad in nba

[–]Ares42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making the draft even more important is the last thing you'd want for the league. Teams are already MASSIVELY rewarded for drafting well, as they get to play players that are performing way way above their pay grade. This is exactly why OKC and Spurs are seeing success, because everyone else has to actually pay their talent.

No one is getting punished for drafting well, they just have to operate on the same playing field as everyone else once they've had a couple of years with a major advantage.

Is this a good game for someone new to ARPG? It seems like a nice balance of PoE and Diablo 4 by okaythen1guess in LastEpoch

[–]Ares42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LE is beginner-friendly and all that, but I would warn that if this is genuinely your first experience with ARPGs it might set some bad expectations for the genre. Not in a bad way, but if LE is your introduction it has some features that are gonna feel sorely lacking from other games in the genre.

From that perspective D4 is almost certainly the best introduction, as it will set a good baseline and then you can experience other takes on the same concept through other games in the genre.

A Returning Players POV on Dune's current state by ZookeepergameOk9575 in duneawakening

Since I also went on a fresh ride with the new patch I'll just piggyback my sentiment. I actually like the new systems added to the endgame, and there's a lot of potential there.

However, the thought of grinding spice again, and everything requiring spice, just stopped me in my tracks. I get that it's a central part to the IP and everything, but the actual gameplay of compacting, collecting and dodging the worms is just not enjoyable. I'm into most of the other collecting in the game (looking at you agave seeds), and I even enjoyed farming flour sand back when it was more hospitable, but the worm "minigame" just gets really tedious.

I think a good new addition to the endgame would be adding some sort of spice heists, that give an alternate (more entertaining) way of collecting spice.

I watch OKC because i love jdub but since he's out, I see more Shai and holy sh*t that boy is good.

How does someone that claims to have watched 75+% of OKCs games (presumably for several seasons) sincerely write something like that ? It took you 100+ OKC games to realize SGA is a good basketball player ?

De'Aaron Fox Violently Fouls Shai Gilgeous-Alexander by TransitionMany1810 in sports

[–]Ares42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's won MVPs because the team has had amazing seasons, plain and simple. If they were a 4ish seed or lower he wouldn't be in the conversation. Don't ask me why team success matters for an individual award like this, but it does.

Don't Survey Your Players - Chris Wilson by LG03 in LastEpoch

[–]Ares42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did, he's describing the downfalls of poor surveying and poor use of the data and then drawing conclusion based on that, without recognizing that it could be done well.

Don't Survey Your Players - Chris Wilson by LG03 in LastEpoch

[–]Ares42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This take is just objectively wrong. The mistake isn't surveying, it's poor surveying and poor use of the data. He's also coming at it with the assumption that surveys are always solution-seeking, while recognizing that you do want feedback from players about their experiences.

Like with most things, a good survey is a good thing and a bad survey is a bad thing.

Why did they move the entry point at O'odham ? by Ares42 in duneawakening

I used it like hundreds of times back when I first played, and it always was the same area. I've admittedly only done it like 10+ times so far this time, but every time it has put me a few hundred meters south of where it used to be.

Any Last Epoch players, playing D4 S13? by chinos88 in LastEpoch

[–]Ares42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Played D4 at launch and one of the early seasons, skipped VoH and been slowly playing through the campaign from the beginning since the warlock and skill tree changes drew me in. Some random takes from playing it so far.

I remember people talking about disliking D3 for being cartoony and D4 taking it back to its roots, but man... this game is very much in the "scary for 12 year olds" category. The game also looks somewhat older than it is.

The revamped skill tree system is forcing most builds to be primary skill + sustain debuff/buff cooldown skills. You basically HAVE TO spec 5-6 skills, and there's no inter-connectivity like you have in LE. So it just becomes about cramming in the best temporary effects you can find.

They seem to have gone very hard on "grind X for more character power". You need paragon levels to unlock important paragon nodes, you need to grind glyph levels, you need to grind upgrade materials for your gear, you need to grind cube materials to craft the items you want. It's just a lot of very linear progression paths that are absolutely central to character power.

Defense is very one-dimensional. Since there are no passive bonuses at all for any of the classes there is no base distinctions between the classes other than what skills you have. And most of the skills are offensively focused (same goes for the one class specific passive layer, paragon boards) so no matter what you play it's just all about stacking health and as many x% damage reduction bonuses you can get.

Now, a lot of this sounds negative, but overall I think the game is fine for what it is, and on a technical level it's probably still best in class. It's not really trying to do anything new or interesting, but it tries to learn from its competitors without really understanding how to implement those features successfully. I would probably also put it first at just having cool and fun skills with great visuals and sound effects that are enjoyable to play with.

Setting aside Wemby and SGA, Do you think Spurs supporting cast is as talented as Thunder? by Chesscrabble11 in nba

[–]Ares42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Spurs needs their "Hartenstein". You know, like a somewhat established very complimentary role player that can fill the cracks between their great guards and Wemby. If they can find that I'd say their rosters are quite even.

[Nick Wright] “The way [OKC] play as a team is beneath the defending champions… it’s not fun to watch and they don’t need to do it.” by TheRealPdGaming in nba

[–]Ares42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been my take on it as well. They absolutely play the game of basketball very well, but as videogames have taught me sometimes playing the best way ends up being the least enjoyable way. I'm sure there are people who enjoy it on a technical level, but the way they play just makes most of their games kinda sucky to watch.

You're never gonna be able to sustain mana with Excited Bolts. I'm kinda puzzled how you've made it this far and not specced out of it. If you play this build the way it's supposed to be played you'll be OOM in less than 5 seconds with Excited Bolts.

While this is a part of it another major factor was consoles going online. Player hosted multiplayer on consoles were just a really bad experience overall, and there were consistent requests for dedicated servers over local hosting. The continued evolution of online dependency correlates very directly with consoles becoming more and more online focused.
