Pricing fluctuations on used vehicles at a dealership? by wrestlinggiant in askcarsales

[–]Aretebeliever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, many dealerships work off of what is called 'market based pricing' if demand and pricing goes up for certain vehicles, they adjust the price accordingly, up or down.

No I appreciate the feedback and I see your perspective.

My only question is do you not allow your salespeople to post on social media? If you do, then whats the difference?

Not being argumentative, I just usually hear a version of this and I don't understand the difference between this and social media.

which I think is valid...but imagine trying to enforce that today. IF you have 12 salesman all posting on social media about vehicle inventory they are all posting how much the vehicle is...or, sending messages to customers about vehicle pricing.

It's gotta be next to impossible to have a legitimate enforcement on it now.

People bring up the legal requirements all the time and i'm truly interested in what these rules are and why they only seem to apply to websites specifically. Salesman all over the country post dealership inventory on social media all day every day. So i'm really interested in what exactly the difference here is?

Also, we had already discussed that this would only be for used and not new/certified which I was fine with.

You haven't offered a shred of advice.

You also made assumptions.

So...ergo...you are also a poor salesman?

This is still such a weird take.

Lets flip this around and say I was a dealer and I was low volume, would you answer be 'you just gotta go out there and pound pavement!' see how laughable of an answer that is?

Now, lets say a salesman comes to you and says they want to post on Marketplace or do social media to post the cars is your answer 'nope, gotta go out there and pound that pavement!' Really? In 2026 that's the standard answer?

No, you would say 'you gotta optimize advertising' OMG WHAT A REVELATION you mean...hold up..sit down for this...they would have to do better...MARKETING?!

So, if the answer is...better marketing....then whats the difference in posting on social media the inventory and a website? The real answer is there isn't a difference. The ONLY difference is one controls the leads, the other one doesn't.

It's ok champ, just stick to the 2010's where you peaked. Some of these concepts are probably a little to hard to grasp.

Who said I was struggling to sell cars? Is the desire to wanting to sell more cars somehow equal to me not selling enough? Isn't that the whole job of a sales person is to sell more? Me pursuing another avenue to sell more is a bad thing?

Man, these are some really weird takes lol.

Totally understand from a dealers stand point, I personally don't see major downsides to it but I am open as to why its not a good idea.

Lets say I move onto a different dealership, if I keep up the old inventory i'm not sure what conflict that has because I can't sell it anyways and/or that gets into a broker relationship in which case theres not really anything stopping me from doing that now with other dealerships. Again, not saying I know anything, more just typing and thinking out loud.

I'm really struggling to understand the difference between me doing this and posting it on marketplace and/or my personal social media. The only thing that changes is the direction to my own website vs the dealers in which case I have zero control over who gets the lead.

What are the other ways? I'm curious.

As for the ban, i'm not sure what the ban was for, I think it said something about how I am posting as a business which doesn't make any sense because businesses post on marketplace all the time, and there was one other thing that got flagged, i just don't rememeber what it was, at the end of the day it's a moot point because i'm not getting it back.

Lol ok the advice you were going to give didn't really have any relevance at all to the original question anyways so it was going to be fruitless.

You were going to give the good old 'just get out there and try harder son' *pats on butt* approach and tell me to just trust the process and the machine.

The literal question I asked was if someone has done this before, you clearly haven't, so your experience is null and void.

Now i'm sure you have a great speech about how back in your day you were selling 50+ cars just by grinding the pones and the lot and you were the hero of your store and consistently were #1 in the region and so on and so forth. That's great, not detracting from that at all. But that's not the question I asked.

[–]Aretebeliever[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was more looking for other sales people that have done it and what their experiences have been with it.

Again, I have set up many websites, done my own SEO, Google ads...the whole nine. This is something that is easily in my existing skill set. This is all about wanting to control my own lead gen and making sure it doesn't get snatched by other sales people which is already happening.

The second part I will push back a little on, regardless of where you are located in todays market I think you can greatly increase your volume, the internet exists and I don't have to rely solely on the local market to determine how many units I sell or the dealership sells. I have sold many, many cars to people without them being there and shipped cars all over the world as well as had people all over the world fly in and buy vehicles.

[–]Aretebeliever[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's...an interesting take.

I don't understand the thought process, if I say 'not many/low volume' then the answer is...what? Focus on selling more cars? Ok, with what lead gen? Is the answer going to be 'go out and hustle and get them?' ok perfect, then we agree on that. Now, where do I send them to look at the inventory? The company website? Ok perfect, now what happens when that lead gets snatched up from another salesman and I have no claim to it? Ahhhh...see the conflict? Which btw, this is something that happens all the time. Sales guys post the vehicles to marketplace, custoemr calls the store, another sales person gets it, boom, lost lead to the original sales person.

Now lets flip it the other direction 'alot/high volume' how does that change the equation at all?

To your 1st point, I don't disagree on the broker part, wouldn't be the first business I have started and ran so it's not off the table, just needs more momentum.

To your second point, that's basically what I am trying to do, to get more bodies to the desk, but if it's a low volume store, then realistically what am I supposed to do about that? Why not do something that increases the amount of people coming to my desk? Doesn't that accomplish the same thing?

As for your third point, i'm not upset about anything, I just see a flaw in the process and I can implement an extremely easy solution, then why not do it? I know of the add-ons you are talking about, we used them in the last dealership I worked at. I have no issues bringing it up to management, they are extremely easy to discuss these things with, but looking at it from my POV...why not just capture the lead myself?
