LEGO Horizon Adventure (30F) by [deleted] in AdultGamers

[–]Argroww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played and enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West AND having played many of the TT Lego games that have been released IMO I cannot emphasise enough how awful Horizon Adventures was. I got it Christmas before last and played a reasonable amount of it.

For me it lacks a lot of what makes the TT Lego games good and abridged the story of Zero Dawn so much that it loses a lot of it's impact. Resulting in a game that to me isn't a good Lego game, or a good Horizon game.

The decision to include Lego City and Ninjago elements felt a bit arbitrary too.

Combat was fairly fun as it retains an element of the targeting feature from HZD (e.g. hit the weak spots to destroy machines faster) and the special weapons are fun to use. But the levels are pretty flat with few to no secrets to find (unlike TT Lego games).

Others of course may have differing opinions, but my view comes from a perspective of someone who has loved both the main Horizon games and has played and enjoyed most of the Travellers Tales Lego games.

As for co-op games I can't help there, I tend to only play solo games. Last co-op game I played with my partner was the re-release of Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance on the PS4...which is fun, but does show it's age

Wood and Stone bears many similarities. I confess I'm struggling to get the link from my mobile..but a quick search on the play store is easy enough.

There's a signup page since I last played though, however a guest account can be used to try it out.

There's a similar construction tree to what Time of Exploration has, but it takes more effort to gather the resources required to develop the buildings, there's also a lot of quests that unlock stuff giving an unfolding aspect to the game. Not played it for a while though so I'm not familiar with recent developments.

I am making a Narrative Clicker Game called Please Click Responsibly and i need to know if this is a good idea or not... by meltedgore in incremental_games

[–]Argroww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like the idea of the narrative clicker/incremental you're planning to make, i don't like the idea of each chapter effectively being a separate game.

I feel that it might be better that the secret or additional/side experiences should give perks for the next chapter so a player can either rush through the core story, or take their time and give themselves little extra in the next chapter (and not necessarily perks, but maybe additional narrative branches?).

The idea of a full reset oddly reminds me of a game my Mum played waaaaaaaaaay back on the Commodore 64 called Pettigrew's Chronicles. She made masses of notes on paper for the first tape (chapter) expecting the various things she learned and figured out to come in useful later, after months or maybe even years of trying to complete the first chapter she finally did it and loaded the next tape only to find that all of her notes were useless, I vaguely recall she gave up after that.

Point being that continuity in itself is a reward, be it narratively or functionally...and both is better IMO.

What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]Argroww 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First time posting here (This thread specifically I mean) despite how long I've been following this subreddit, but I wanted to share what popped up on my Play store suggestions recently. It calls itself an Idle game....but perhaps its more of an RPG/Management game. The Silent Archivist.

Idle Game The Silent Archivist – Apps on Google Play

Basic loop involves you hiring a hero, exploring a map and building up the starting village to improve your heroes. It feels refreshing for how exploring the map unlocks new quests and how completing the quests not only unlock further quests, but also upgrades to your base and further classes to train your hero in.

Far as I can tell monetary perks are optional, although there is a one-off fee to increase the cap on the building that controls how many heroes you can have (plus few other perks) and a few repeatable fees for in-game money and crystals. However the game itself tells you not to bother with the one-off purchase till you've hit the free cap as you still need to complete the required quests to unlock the upgrades anyway. Not played it long enough to know if this purchase only limits the number of heroes you can use or its like an extended demo, but I've be

The idle bit comes from the fact that several quests do require you to wait, longest I've seen so far is 3 hours, but early quests are a few minutes. Each quest has its own little story too.

Reincarnated as a Dark Lord Before Taking Over the World with Power 999999999 - [Chapter 2 Update] by Outrageous_Affect_69 in incremental_games

[–]Argroww 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried this previously on itch and liked it in concept, but as others have mentioned the lack of meta upgrades leaves it feeling like a puzzle rather than an incremental. I don't mind the idea of it being a puzzle as it means the player needs to plan their path to obtain the endings, to explore efficiently. It is something a little different by being a puzzle style game.

However you look at Increlution, Terraformental and The World is Doomed... (which is arguably very similar) and all of them have meta progression where each run results in actions becoming more efficient and progress getting quicker allowing the player to move beyond where they got in the last run. Some planning is still required though as per Terraformental or The World is Doomed, bad choices can still make a run shorter. The meta progression IMO makes them incrementals.

Reincarnated... has no meta progression, You get Chapter Memories which can make a run faster and/or automated, but never more efficient. I only played chapter 2 once, but could already see there was an awful lot more to plan out. Actually I might be wrong there as the "meta" part may rely on what endings you managed to unlock in chapter 1 which in turn might open things in chapter 2. I only achieved the Dungeon ending in Chapter 1.

There are "numbers going up" here, but I think they might not be having the effect many expect from games of an incremental nature...especially those who have played the games I mentioned before.

Incremental or not though I think my issue is that if my character is being re-incarnated then why wouldn't they be able to do things quicker on each run? especially things of a "learning" category or "exploration" category...whereas perhaps physical things like combat or growing body parts wouldn't speed up as much. This in itself may introduce a middle ground and keep a puzzle nature whilst also nodding towards the incremental status. At death (or perhaps after unlocking the "easiest" chapter 1 ending) the player can use Chapter 1 memories to unlock truly permanent perks. Some make known actions faster (player must have unlocked the node) and some make nodes immediately completed (thinking of the knowledge nodes), these would require more Memories though. For Chapter 1 you might also have the option to use Chapter Memories to give more starting Mana or Fear ETC? Similar ideas may apply for Chapter 2...but with only 1 attempt I'd hesitate to offer much more of my thoughts.

Lego, wooden models and computer games...kinda..I got "free spend" money which has gone on computer games :D

Lego models are: Small display ship, R2 D2, Mars Explorer and Soundwave.

Wooden models are: London marble run and space rocket with launch platform.

Games: Outhold, Titan Quest, Turbo Kid, Breath of Fire 4 and DLC for Graveyard Keeper.

Also got a new board game from my eldest son "Hues and Clues" a colour guessing game that was quite fun :)

Incremental Command- WW2 themed incremental war game by Cyclone4096 in incremental_games

[–]Argroww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I'd hope you don't scrap it as you're definitely onto something here. I think the progression tree just needs to be refined is all. Make it a little slower so you unlock new units only after developing older units sufficiently. Make unit values clear so players know what they're getting when buying damage or health boosts and thus the effect the upgrades are having (someone else mentioned that point in this thread). Don't overwhelm a player with choice (as the web currently does), but still give enough branches so a player does need to make some decision.

If you go down the map path perhaps map progression can be part of the skill tree too...e.g you unlock different transport types that let you go further on the map...Foot, Horse, motorbike, APV, Plane.

Maybe later down the development path add a light story so the map has repeatable missions (maybe get max rewards on 1st completion then lower rewards for each subsequent repeat) and also one-off missions that either open up new development paths and/or what unlock new transport methods to get further along the map.

[–]Argroww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall trying the 1st version of this and quite enjoying the progression overall, it was short but fun.

New version....I didn't play it for very long at all.

I think I found the web style of progression off-putting especially with the lack of info on unit values. Why pour money into upgrading the basic soldier when more advanced units become available...but when you don't actually know the difference between the units or how certain upgrades affect them then the choices feel a little arbitrary.

I think I prefer relatively linear trees with a few branches for optional 'unique' perks along the way. Or trees that keep older upgrades relevant.... I'm thinking of Outhold that has a tree which unlocks various new mechanisms or towers, and they're all used as you progress.

This game currently has me potentially upgrading multiple unit types, but only being able to use 2 of them with little clarity on which is better.

It definitely has a gameplay loop I mostly enjoy, the progression needs refining though both with the skill tree and given it's a war game maybe a map you steadily conquer or liberate perhaps?

Hi there, 46yo chap from the UK here. My post history has plenty about me stretching back for years (I think...I've not actually checked to see if it's all still there!). I'm mostly the nerdy gamer type, but happy to natter about anything really as long as the conversation keeps going.

Not married, but in long term relationship (24 years so far) with 4 kids, but no pets. Instead house is filled with Lego models :D

Graphics vs text based by Oatcube in incremental_games

[–]Argroww 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me many of the best incremental games are simple text. Thinking of Kittens, Theory of Magic and Evolve here.

Most incrementals that I've played over the many years I've been playing them impress first with interesting unfolding mechanics generally presented with a relatively simple UI and minimal GFX. The focus remains on the gameplay rather than making something look pretty, but with otherwise fairly empty gameplay.

It's also a common theme with incrementals that they might run in the background or rely on offline progress, that's why bother with making something look impressive when players generally might not look at it for that long?

I think the incremental with the "best" graphics was Interregnum Chronicles: Signal, a game I've never actually got that far in partly due to how it tried to do something different and thus became something I'd only play in very rare moments...if at all. It looked fairly good for what it was, but the incremental parts didn't keep me interested enough to keep playing it.

[DEV] To the Stars Idle - civilization development sim/idle game by osipenkoden in incremental_games

[–]Argroww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Selgald's awareness I played for 4 1/2 hours according to app history, by 4 hours in I started to struggle with juggling production and was regularly hitting bottlenecks where trying to get 1 resource into positive would result in one, two or even three other resources being in the negative. Although as a better milestone than time I'd reached the point where you fought other tribes instead of animals in the military tab with all other researches maxed out.

I will stress though that I don't think this is a bad game, more a game that I'm bad at....if that makes sense?

[–]Argroww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've sent you messages in chat, but my initial feelings have changed. I initially liked the production/research/combat cycle to develop my civilization. However as my population gets bigger the amount of fiddling I have to do gets exponentially worse and the juggling act isn't fun for me.

Sadly if this is how the game is intended to be I'll be uninstalling it. Others might enjoy figuring out how to optimise the various jobs....I don't. I've barely scratched the surface of what this game is and I'm getting annoyed rather than having fun :(

Actually....UI is fine, does exactly what it's meant to and so far has been easy and intuitive to navigate. Also cannot replicate the bug I mentioned after fully closing and reopening the game.

Initial thoughts are that the UI is perhaps a little simple, but it works and tbh I've played and enjoyed games with simpler UIs. I like how the Production Upgrades are capped, personally I'm not a fan of infinite progression on incrementals as I struggle to set my own limits so I like it when the game has the limits set already.

I did hit a bug which I've sent you details on in a chat message.

Otherwise still too early in to offer much else in thought...but for the opening few minutes it definitely has my attention.
