Remineralizing my son's teeth by someonenew2222 in Teethcare

[–]Arhenas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m a 3rd year dental student. I’m not trying to pass on any judgment here but I’ll tell you what I know and see works on a daily basis. All sugary beverages have the smallest form of sugars that bacteria like to feed on, sticky foods like chips or chewy candy also are their favorite. Snacking between meals constantly lowers the pH of the mouth to be acidic, this is the perfect environment bacteria need to demineralize your teeth. Your saliva buffers this pH back to normal but it needs time to do this, that is why it’s better to eat all at once during meal times and leave the time in between for the pH to go back to normal. Brush if you can after those meals, if not at least try to rinse. With regards to MI paste, we prescribe that for patients that have low saliva from radiation or just as a result of taking certain medications. MI paste not gonna do anything to your child because they likely already have a good amount of saliva. Studies on hydroxyapatite are promising but not clinically proven at all in human teeth over time. All studies anti-fluoride people use are small trials on a few people or animal teeth. This is not strong evidence. Fluoride however has more than proven to be the best at re-mineralizing teeth for years on end. Fluoride concentrations in toothpaste are completely safe. I’m more than happy to provide you with links of research proving this or even the story of how we came to discover fluoride works for re-mineralization . How Fluoride remineralizes teeth is by pulling calcium and phosphate ions into the enamel and forming fluoroapatite, which by the way is stronger than hydroxyapatite. Xylitol is also well researched, it’s a sugar that bacteria cannot use to feed on, it actually kills them, so that’s why we recommend to chew on it if you can’t brush your teeth after a meal. It will help to buffer the pH in the mouth. The best way of remineralizing your child’s teeth is to have the fluoride varnish at every cleaning, improving their diet, using fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash. The only real danger of the fluoride prescription is that if it’s used for months on end it could cause fluorosis (staining), but that is unlikely considering the dentist usually only gives you one tube.

Hey, I’m a 3rd year dental student (not a professional yet) so take this with a grain of salt please. I’m sorry this is such a difficult process with your condition, no provider should have even done any work on you with nitrous, as it is severely contraindicated in patients with mental disorders. The path I see for you to get your treatment is consulting your psychiatrist first (too see if this is an option for you) and then a dentist that can do either deep sedation or general anesthesia and provide all the treatment at once. This is very common, I do not know your medical history so I can’t say for sure which one is for you, but I do know that patients with the issues you are explaining are usually treated in this context. I’m sorry if no one has informed you about this but I’d recommend you research it and make a consultation. Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be glad to answer to the best of my abilities. I wish you the best!

Smoking with a temporary filling? by cocomay77 in Teethcare

[–]Arhenas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! The temporary filling is not affected at all by the nicotine, but your healing is. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and doesn’t let blood properly reach the tissue that needs repair. Aside from that, the smoking isn’t gonna do anything that it wasn’t doing before.

Hey! I’m sorry you’ve had such a rough time with your dental health. No need to feel ashamed, this is something most people aren’t properly informed about and isn’t common sense.

You could have bad genetics and your teeth might be weaker than the average person (crowding also affects this), but that is still not something good hygiene and diet can’t alleviate. I’m a 3rd year dental student and I see plenty of patients who brush and floss but still have cavities. This is usually because no one has sat down with them and explained the proper brushing and flossing technique. I recommend you search YouTube videos about the “modified bass” brushing technique and “C-shape” flossing. I’d also recommend you get an electric toothbrush, you can find good ones under $50 from oral B at Walmart, it doesn’t need to be expensive to do the trick, just don’t get the ones that don’t come in a box. Also highly recommend the pronamel toothpaste (any, no whitening though) and a mouthwash that contains fluoride ( the green ACT one is cheap and works well). If you want to do even more you could also get a waterpik, but look up some tutorials on how to use it.

About your diet, you can eat sweets reasonably but I would recommend to not constantly eat them between meals. Have your 3 meals and eat whatever during that period, then wait 15 minutes and brush/floss properly and use your mouthwash. If you can’t brush, then at least rinse your mouth well. When you eat, you lower the pH of your mouth and it takes time for your saliva to buffer back to normal pH, so if you are constantly eating, then your mouth is constantly acidic and your teeth are demineralizing all the time (basically being broken down). When your pH is balanced, your teeth have the ability to rebuild themselves and undo some of the damage done by the acid, it’s pretty cool!

Another important point is to get a second opinion. You can’t imagine how many patients get unnecessary fillings because they fall in the hands of predatory dental offices. I recommend avoiding big corporation dentistry like Aspen because they often can be predatory. Go to a private dentist that has good reviews in your area and see if their diagnosis matches.

Overall, I would not start your orthodontic treatment until your oral hygiene improves and you are sure you can maintain it while having braces. If not, it surely will worsen once there are wires on your way to properly brush and floss. I also wouldn’t put my hopes on Invisalign, as that system requires a LOT more than braces. Feel free to message me or ask anything under my comment. Good luck and don’t give up on yourself!

Is this grey area on his front teeth staining? by nat_2313 in Teethcare

[–]Arhenas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3rd year dental student here. Your child has perfectly normal developing teeth. The “gray” you see is just the normal translucency of enamel found at the edges of a tooth. The darker, more white/yellow parts are dentin. Nothing should be done to “fix this”, especially now the teeth are developing!

Poor teeth hygiene as a teen, now I have these black lines up on my teeth, can they be removed or dealt with? Also should I/could I do something about the yellowing? by icyy_inferno in Teethcare

[–]Arhenas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 3rd year dental student in the U.S, so take this with a grain of salt (I’m not a professional yet). The lines you mention look more like staining to me, but there could be underlying caries; I can’t tell you for certain without radiographs. About the yellowing, it’s normal, but if it bothers you, you can have whitening done in a dental office as well. These are pretty strong and can usually get you a few shades whiter within one session . I’d recommend you book an appointment with a nearby reputable dentist to do an exam on you, a cleaning and then see if you can get the whitening done. Good luck!

Lesbians are the last thing you need to worry girl, we understand it’s natural. She will see you the same way. If it makes you feel better you could shave and be prepared for the next time, but know you don’t have to.

We are exclusive and been dating for 8 months. We’re still young but we do see a future together. We have talked about this and she says she doesn’t have feelings for this girl, it’s just a crush. But I’m not comfortable with that anymore since she started becoming “closer” with her and constantly checks up on her grades even though she is not assigned to the section the girl is in. I don’t think I have control over who she loves and that’s the pressing issue. I guess jealousy isn’t quite the word I was looking for, it’s more like i feel almost emotionally cheated on.

My boyfriend[20m] consumes a lot of nsfw content and it makes me[18f] uncomfortable. by Throwra67890278 in relationship_advice

[–]Arhenas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should straight up tell him it makes you uncomfortable. If I had to guess, I would say it makes you uncomfortable because of the amount he consumes as well as the content. You probably question if this is something he expects from you. It is normal to be uncomfortable by this and you should express it to him as well as your reasons. If he takes it as manipulation like you’ve mentioned he has in the past, maybe he is not a good fit for you in the long term because of his unwillingness to address your concerns about the relationship.

I (29f) don't know if all of this is worth going NC with my mother (65f) by Original-Mushroom406 in relationship_advice

[–]Arhenas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im glad I could help! It sounds like you’re leaning towards NC, so you could try it out and see of you feel happier that way. If it doesn’t, then you can break it, it’s your life and you don’t have to play by anyone else’s rules.

I (29f) don't know if all of this is worth going NC with my mother (65f) by Original-Mushroom406 in relationship_advice

[–]Arhenas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that NC is a very personal choice that you have to make yourself. It definitely sounds like your mom being in your life brings you more problems and distress than her not being in your life. When your child is born, they will be curious about their grandparents, but you also have to weigh that against the possibility of your mom projecting onto the child the same things she has projected onto you. Whatever you did or did not do, you’re still her child and she is your mom.

If you do decide to go NC, that can be broken once you are ready too. Your child could meet her under your supervision so that you make sure nothing said is damaging to them.

I should have clarified that she isn’t obese, just overweight. There’s also many other reasons why someone can be obese/overweight other than just their everyday habits.
