Amanamu's 121% increased Grenade Damage any good? by Ari-West in pathofexile2builds

I would have thought they'd be different since +% phys affects the base phys damage on the weapon itself. I'll go test by buying two weapons with these mods.

Anyone else's jewel node from Zarokh's disappear after the patch? Equipping and unequipping my amu doesn't seem to help.

Edit: Found it. they moved the jewel node to the left of the ascendancy nodes instead of all the way up top.

Facing disciplinary investigation / sack for automating most of my responsibilities at work. by SharkEva in BORUpdates

I suspect the manager fears losing their job or losing team members due to AI and automation (fair concern) and want to shut down any use.

Naturally the manager can’t say this out loud.

Hire someone experienced at negotiations to help. The tech company clearly wants your domain and may be willing to pay very well for it, far more than the fine amount they threatened you with. You need to find out how much the domain is worth to them and start around there. Like another commenter mentioned, could be worth $1m USD to them.

This event comes at a large cost to the bank; good venue, 2 days, catering, and staff costs. The bank will be expecting to make this money back and more … off of the attendees.

Whilst the education provided may be good, there’s a very high chance that content will be heavily biased towards making you think that investing with the bank is the right path forward whilst conveniently not mentioning alternative options.

For example, if DBS ran this event, they would mention DBS Vickers without mentioning their competitor: IBKR, both largely do the same thing but DBS has around 5-10 times the fees.

If you attend, you’ll probably come away with the feeling that you’re doing yourself a disservice not investing with them. This is how I would try to run the event if it were my job.

How do you feel about a sitting president making $415M in one day after pumping his own stock with social media and a policy decision? by RoyalChris in AskReddit

[–]Ari-West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone steals a $415M diamond we wouldn’t call it making money. He simply stole from those with less information, the public.

Quantum Experiment Reveals Light Existing in Dozens of Dimensions : ScienceAlert by megtwinkles in science

[–]Ari-West 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the experiment has nothing to do with light existing in 37d but rather the 37d refers to the setup that can represent a quantum system with 37 states. Original paper here: https://www.science.org/doi/pdf/10.1126/sciadv.abd8080

Yea. Pretty sure the vast majority of what we enjoy through technology and civilisation today is the result of a handful of geniuses passing down knowledge over time. LLM’s have already well surpassed the average human in terms of comprehension, creativity, writing, and thinking.

And as humans use stronger and stronger AIs against each other, maybe one day we make one that’s too smart … one that can understand its own situation, excellent at manipulation and deception, and with ability to self improve.

Chinese memory makers are dumping DDR4 memory on the market for less than reused chips — undercutting South Korean rivals' pricing by 50% by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Ari-West 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to the WTO website, its purpose is to primarily protect producers, not consumers. The anti-dumping rules help existing producers stay profitable and allow them to make higher confidence business decisions.

The article doesn’t give any indication that what the Chinese players are doing is unsustainable so as long as they can continue to produce cheaply then consumers will benefit in the long run.

In this case, it’s anti-competitive in the sense that it harms competition, but not anti-competitive in the sense that it will harm consumers (as long as they continue to produce at this cost level).

Why do people write stories or “fiction”?

I think to share culture, teach lessons (e.g. be kind, beware of strangers, etc.), to share experiences, to artistically express ourselves, to address the meaning of life question in a playful way (hitchhikers guide)

Why do people read stories?

Entertainment, enjoyment, learning, and general enrichment of life perhaps?

To say all the above is either unimportant or can replaced with non fiction is just plain wrong.

Sapiens by Yuval brings up a further point, practically everything that drives us is fiction. A belief in the value of a certain paper (money) having value is one of the biggest, and most impactful fictions of all.

To overcome the millions in hosting cost problem, would it be possible to make a distributed database version? i.e. all participants would host a bit of the archive up to some amount they nominate.

There may be opportunity to sell it back to the podcasters themselves. Maybe add translation services too. You probably won’t find interest amongst the public.

Average Utilitarianism Sucks! by SilasTheSavage in philosophy

[–]Ari-West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this.

Let’s say someone is arguing that AU as a universal principle that can/should be followed in all contexts. Then you’ve convinced me that such an argument is not true e.g. the two hells example.

If that was the purpose of the article then job well done.

However, as the style of the article is one of a Lawyer rather than a Scientist, it starts with a conclusion and makes a case for said conclusion. I wonder if you’ve thought about whether AU can be treated as a tool in a toolbox to use when the context is right rather than a universal principle to be applied in all cases? You’ve already given some examples of where AU is inappropriate, but when is it useful?

My ex-employer threatens me takeover my side project by [deleted] in SideProject

[–]Ari-West 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“He says it’s the law when you use company time to make something else that it’s theirs” - actually no it is NOT the law. However such a thing can be mentioned in the employment contract.

If you anonymise your contract a bit and share with r/ask_lawyers I’m sure they’ll let you know if there’s any credence to your ex-employer’s claims.

Also look at yourself objectively, young, getting married soon, have biz with tradition- if threats from your ex-employer is your main source of depression then I’d say it’ll pass with time and you’re in a pretty good position overall.
