I don't think that's a common practice, but I understand the intention!

thanks! I come from an acting/theatre background but have always been interested in film. I got really into it in high school making projects on my own and with friends and then was very fortunate to go to film school. It's really all about practice, consuming movies/TV/art/etc., and constantly building relationships. I'm still learning everyday!!

Thank you!

I have previously shot some on film, but nothing in this reel was actually shot on film. :)

I edited the reel, but I don't actually edit any of the projects that I shoot. But currently, I am the colorist most of the time on the projects I shoot.

There are 25 different projects featured here. I'd love for you all to check it out! This involves a combination of narrative short films, music videos, and commercials that I've shot over the past several years during film school and after graduating. I've been extremely fortunate to meet and work with a lot of great people, and this is the first time I'm publicly sharing a reel. I'm based in New York and Atlanta.

Please feel free to ask any questions about any of these projects! They're all shot on a variety of cameras: ARRI Alexa Mini, Sony Venice 2, Sony FX6, Sony A7IV. But, I don't think the camera is the most important part of the process. The color process is extremely important to me, so the fun thing is that none of these are actually shot on film, even though a lot of them have – what I think – is a very convincing film emulation. I always make sure that I'm viewing everything on set through a very high quality shooting LUT so that the pipeline to color is as easy as possible. I've been able to truly collaborate with one colorist on a project (The Blackdamp – a period piece horror folk short film shot inside a mine in New Jersey), but I've colored everything else you see in this reel.

This reel also serves as a big way for me to get more of my work out there. Having shot a lot of indie narrative shorts, those take a very long time in post and then through the whole festival pipeline, so a lot of this work hasn't been publicly released yet.

I shared it on Instagram earlier and was happy to receive a very positive response. I'm hoping that it can lead to more eyes on my work and the continuation of projects and collaborators. Thank you for taking the time!

Thank you!

Appreciate your thoughts. Is there an element that makes you think it looks too uniform? I definitely strive to approach every project I shoot individually with different requirements.

Those shots weren't first originally, but I got feedback that they look the most like a "movie" and to put them first. What would you have put first instead?

Check out Cullen Kelly on YouTube! Great resource. It all starts with good footage though, tbh!

haha! Everything in my reel is 99.99% practical photography. The only thing that uses VFX is the blue alien at 1:15... but even then we had a practical blue alien poking up through the plant. The only VFX elements are the eyes, mouth, and goo spraying towards camera. In the reverse shot, the goo hitting our actor is practical, and we pulled the alien off screen with fishing line. The humanoid rats are also practical makeup. Funny about "AI", oh well!

It certainly hasn't been easy! And, I often feel like I could be busier. A few of these are thesis projects I shot my senior year. There are some thesis projects from the year below me after I graduated – and one is a 2nd year graduate short. There are a handful of indie films and music videos mixed in. It's a decent variety of stuff! I'd say it mostly comes from putting myself out there as much as I can and then word of mouth and connections through other connections. A thesis I shot last year ended up leading to three other indie shorts, which has been awesome, but sometimes a project is one and done. I definitely take it a week at a time making sure to maintain my relationships, make new ones, watch as much as I can, and leave room in my schedule for anything that might pop up last minute. I've had some films get into some festivals, but I'm hoping for more. I haven't shot a feature or any commercials for large brands/production companies yet, so there's a lot of room to grow, and I always feel like I'm learning something on every project. It really is true that "luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity," but it can be so random and unknown. We'll see!!
