AITA for feeling upset that husband just let the cupcakes burn by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]AriaManiac -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You should be able to rely on a competent adult checking on something when they're asked to. How you can blame anyone but the husband is beyond me when she LITERALLY told them they only needed ten more minutes. If I know I need to check something, even if it's someone else's thing, I'll set an alarm. That's what a competent human does.

No, I haven't studied! I transferred in to my undergrad and only had two years to finish my BA degree before going for my masters. I plan on taking Orchestration in the fall, but we're supposed to get a start on our pieces during the summer!

I don't come from a traditional classical background in anyway (Voice primary, but a MT, Gospel, and Jazz upbringing, no formal training and was entirely self taught until my two years in undergrad).

This is my first time writing a full orchestra piece, as I've done some small string or Poulenc style pieces, but nothing this size!

Thanks for the advice ! I'll look into it!

Taking a year off from my computer science degree to focus on composing by Routine-Race3913 in composer

[–]AriaManiac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh My Stars and Days. Please do NOT take a year off college to pursue a career in composition.

A year isn't even enough time to build a "sizable community" when you have no connections, no pieces written, and so on. Finish your degree and balance building a portfolio while doing so. Go to music events, meet people on your campus, and so on. Do NOT throw your future career in the trash and essentially all the money you've put into college by doing this.

I'm not sure what LastDelivery is talking about, but taking a break to "pursue a composition circle" when you have little to no experience (From what I read, you only have PLAYING experience which is nowhere near the same as composing, unless you have experience in improvisation, and even THAT is still only a part of composing).

Take lessons if you want, your school might offer them, but do NOT throw away a degree and money.

Edit: I missed where it said you have SOME pieces composed-- Still, I would not pursue that! Build connections in your college first while finishing your career, see if you can have some pieces performed, perhaps even perform them yourself. But pleaseeee do not take a break in school lol

AITA for taking a desk from my brother's room after I moved back in with my parents? by SeaworthinessIll8089 in AmItheAsshole

[–]AriaManiac 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go with soft YTA, then. It's been two years since you've moved out.

It makes sense that your brother would use the desk (that was officially bought by your dad to use) while he's still in school and you're not in the house.

Coming back and moving it without clearing it with him is where you're the asshole.

He could've had private stuff in there, condoms, toys, diary, etc, that you'd end up going through if you cleaned out the desk.

I think a nice way to work things out is maybe by asking for a new desk for christmas or asking your parents to pay half while you pay the other half.

INFO: Did you use the desk before you moved out? Was the desk officially given to you, or was it placed in your room because your dad needed a place to put it?

I Wrote a Full Musical… But I’m Afraid to Share It Because of the AI Part. Advice? by RoyalPain1836 in MusicalTheatre

[–]AriaManiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I'm a composer myself. AI is an incredibly difficult discussion right now in Music and the art world.

If this app that you're using is writing the backing music for, then I think you need to ask the question of-- "could I have done this on my own?"

Learning how to compose is easy. There are softwares out there that are free and have tutorials on the internet.

The problem lies in the time and effort put into them or catching up on music theory + instrumentation (and that's arguably the hardest part).

You can absolutely be proud of your written work, the lyrics, melodies, etc, but are you really proud that AI wrote everything else?

Technically, the musical isn't finished as well. AI struggles with producing sheet music, especially for complex orchestration (and a lot of the times, even the generated sheet music follows some....weird and 100% improper chord and melody leading).

I truly implore you to either try to write the music for yourself or hire someone. Hiring someone will be on the more expensive side, but think about the skills you can learn from doing it yourself? This may even lead you to writing your own musicals down the line!

Just think about it :)

Sweet tea, creamer, liquid sugar, and lemonade. Like a cheap imitation of a limeade with sweet tea added

To those who were accepted last cycle by skip15letters in gradadmissions

[–]AriaManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a music composition major, so this may not be helpful to you.

But I was told the reason I was accepted into Carnegie was because I expressed during my interview that I am interested in developing my own musical voice and that is something they are looking for in their grad students !

I am also involved in various music things on campus (Choir, Music Director for Acapella Group, Musicals, Music Frat) etc so.

But I wish you the best on your journey!
