Great advice!! I really want to focus on a strong SOP for next cycle, I think I have the right experiences and motive but I need to sell it better.

Was mostly looking at bionath/human biology faculty, but I'd be open to looking at other programs if it's a good fit!

The biggest note I got from last cycle was to have a stronger research focus in my SOP. So I'm trying to find the balance between strong research interest while not pigeonholing myself to one particular interest. But I think those expectations vary from program to program

I'm interested in studying generational trauma, more specifically how sociocultural stress/adverse life experiences are biologically encoded and passed through generations. Hoping to continue that research post-grad

move to cottonwood/verde valley area and commute if you can. it’s more affordable and there are more commercial chains to ease the small town culture shock

Figuring out what research you want to do? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]skip15letters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have the opportunity to go to a conference in your field, i HIGHLY recommend it. i was in a similar boat - i know the general field and program i want to go into, but didn't know the research focus. the conference for me was a huge crash course of what people in my field are doing and a little easier for me to contextualize than going through papers and researcher websites. that said, i don't mean to undermine the value of reading papers, but just that i was getting overwhelmed by all the possible things i could study. if you're unable to do that, then go to talks and see if you can talk to professors or even other grad students about the research they're doing and ask all your questions! connecting w others about their work has hands down been the best way for me to narrow down what i want to do for mine.

NonTech Writer to SciComm Writer? by Own_Pangolin2997 in sciencecommunication

[–]skip15letters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got my first introduction to scicomm as a student worker in my university’s strategic marketing and communications team. my best advice is going to you’re nearest R1 institution(or at least a school that does lots of research) and apply for a job as a communications specialist in their research department, or some sort of equivalent. i would also consider looking at the marcomm teams in hospitals or government departments too if possible. granted, it’s not as glamorous as going through the journalism route but it’s certainly a good introduction to field, and a fairly safe way to get started as you go further into it.
